일본 고대 말기∼중세 초기 天皇에 대한 인식 - 『古事談』을 중심으로 - (The study on the perception of the Japanese emperors over the end of ancient times and the early middle ages focused on Kojidan)

초록

日本이 폐쇄적이고 자국 중심적 세계관을 견지하며, 보수적 차별적 사회구조를 탈피하지 못했던 역사적 저변 요인 중 하나로 天皇家의 유지와 존속이라는 문제가 있다. 天皇이라는 존재가 실제 당시 사람들에게 어떠한 존재로 인식되고 있었는지, 특히 고대 말∼중세 초 시기에 대해『古事談』의 일화들을 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 『古事談』속의 天皇에 대한 인식은 부정적 성향이 강하다.
天皇들의 치부와 광기, 부도덕성을 전하며, 죽은 신하에게조차 위협당하고. 지옥에서조차 신하들에게 심판받는 존재이다. 신하들에게 농락당하고, 포상권, 인사권도 마음대로 행사하지 못하며, 신하의 속임수에 왕위를 폐위 당해 버리기도 하는 존재로 회자된다. 급기야 天皇의 전생이 악심을 가진 승려로 이야기되고, 치정사건과 연결되어 전란을 일으키고 怨靈이 되어 복수하는 존재로인식되기도 하였다.
『古事談』을 통해 전하는 이러한 天皇 관련의 일화들은, 당시 귀족들이 天皇을무능하고 무력한 존재로 여기며 경시하던 분위기를 전한다. 이런 가운데 원래天皇家의 이야기를 실어야 했을 『古事談』卷1이 오히려 신하의 권세와 능력을이야기하는 특징을 보인다.『古事談』에 보이는 이러한 인식은 고대 국가를 통해장기간에 걸쳐 형성해 온 귀족들의 對 天皇 인식의 반영이라 볼 수 있다. 주체적이고 자립적인 정치 능력을 갖추지 못하고 특정 藤原氏 가문에 밀착되어 제대로왕권을 발휘해 오지 못한 天皇들을 바라보며 형성해 온 저항적 심층 의식이『古事談』에 투영되었다고 평가할 수 있다.

One of the historical fundamental reasons that Japan has held the closed, self-centered perspective and not gotten out of the conservative and discriminatory social structures is caused by the matter of the retention and continuity of the Japanese imperial family. The anecdotes, in particular, described over the end of ancient eras and the early middle ages in Kojidan show how the existence of the emperors at that time is understood. They are perceived as strongly negative. They are depicted as agents related to the matter of dirty secrets, madness, and immorality, as well as beings of getting intimidated and judged by dead subjects even in hell.
They are also said to be ones not to be able to exercise any powers of giving prizes or positioning subjects and be prone to get deceived by subjects only to be dethroned.
In the end, they are considered as the evil monks in their previous life, so that they end up bringing about a war involving foolish infatuation and then becoming the revenants taking a revenge. The anecdotes associated with these emperors shown in Kojidan suggest the overall atmosphere of how deeply aristocrats at that time regard them as incompetent and helpless, looking down on them as well. For that reason it is characterized that even the first volume of Kojidan covers the authority and power of subjects rather than heroic stories of imperial family. Therefore, the awareness described in this book could be the reflection of negative perception that aristocrats hold against emperors, built over the long period in ancient societies. In other words, it can be proposed through this book that aristocrats in those times must have formed a sense of strong resistance, looking at emperors who are not equipped with any independent and self-reliant political competence, and who are too close to the certain clan called the Fujiwara to wield their legitimate royal power.
