한·일 혼인담 비교‒‘혼례 날 죽을 운명’을 둘러싼 민담과 민속 (A Comparative Study of Marriage Tales between Korea and Japan ‒Folk tales and Folklore Surrounding ‘the Fate of Death on the wedding day)

초록

본고는 ‘혼례 날 죽을 운명’을 모티프로 한 한·일 민담의 양상을 분석하고, 이를 통해 양국의 혼례 민속, 그리고 혼인에 대한 양국 민중의 인식과 심리를 비교 고찰한 것이다. 구체적인 분석대상으로는, 한국에서는 ‘혼례 날의 호환’형 민담을, 일본 쪽에서는 ‘혼례 날의 죽음’형 민담을 선택하다. 혼례 날에 죽음을 경고하는 서사는 민중들이 혼례라는 통과의례 혹은 혼인에 대해 느끼는 공포와 불안의 심리를 반한다. 또한, 혼인담에 나타난 이러한 죽음의 모티프는 실제 혼례의식이 장례와 유사한 의식을 거치며 상징적 죽음을 재연하는 것과 일맥상통한다. 혼례에서 죽음의 의식을 통과한 남녀가 아내와 남편이라는 자아로 새로 태어나듯, ‘혼례 날 죽 을 운명’ 이야기 속 신랑 신부는 죽음을 극복하고 행복한 삶을 손에 넣는다. 이러한 공통점과 보편성 이외에 ‘혼례 날 죽을 운명’의 한·일 혼인담은 몇 가지 중요한 차이점과 특수성을 드러낸다. 본고에서는 첫째, 신랑 신부를 죽음에 이르게 하는 위험 요소의 차이, 둘째, 죽을 운명에 처한 주체, 셋째, 누가 신랑 신부를 죽을 운 명에서 구해 내는가의 관점에서 한·일 혼인담의 차이를 도출하고 그 문화적 배경과 의미를 논하다.

영어초록

In this paper, we analyzed the aspects of Korean and Japanese folk tales based on the motif of “the Fate of Death on the Wedding Day”. Through this analysis, we compared and examined the perceptions and psychology of the two countries’ populations regarding wedding customs and marriage. Specifically, the paper focuses on the Korean folk tales of “disasters caused by tigers on the wedding day”type and the Japanese folk tales of “death on the wedding day”type as the subjects. Narratives warning of death on the wedding day reflect the fears and anxieties that people feel about the rite of passage of wedding or marriage. Moreover, the motif of death found in marriage tales aligns with the fact that wedding ceremonies undergo rituals similar to funerals, and these wedding rituals also serve as a symbolic reenactment of death. Just as individuals transition through the consciousness of death during wedding ceremonies to emerge as new identity as husband and wife, the groom and bride in the stories of “the Fate of Death on the Wedding Day” overcome death and grasp a happy life. Beyond these shared themes and universality, the Korean and Japanese marriage tales featuring ‘the Fate of Death on the Wedding Day’ motif also shows several significant differences and uniqueness. In this paper, we explore: firstly, the differences in the elements leading the groom and bride towards their untimely demise; secondly, the subject who is destined to die; and thirdly, who rescues the groom and bride from this destiny. We draw out differences in the context of Korean and Japanese marriage tales, discussing their cultural backgrounds and significance.
