17, 18세기 韓中 鬼神·妖怪談의 逸脫과 欲望 (A Study on Deviation and Desire in the Ghost and Apparition Tales of Chosun and China in the 17th and 18th Century)

초록

본고는 17, 18세기 조선과 중국의 귀신, 요괴담을 중심으로 그 속에 담긴 일탈과 욕망을 비교문화사적 관점에서살펴보았다.
조선의 『천예록』과 『학산한언』은 초현실적 존재에 대한 무한한 관심을 드러낸 작품이다. 그러나 당시 강고한 성리학적 이념에 의해 귀신, 요괴를 이야기하면서도 그에 대한 이성적, 합리적 설명을 강조하였다. 조선에서 초현실적 존재 중에서 귀신이나 요괴가 부정의 대상이었다면 神과 鬼의 중간에 있는 神仙은, 비록 그 함의가 현실의 부정과 초월에의 욕망이라고 해도, 문인들 사이에서 긍정적 의미를 지녔다. 특히 신돈복은 신선술 및 도교 사상에 경도되었으며 『학산한언』도 그 연장선상에 있다. 그는 드러내놓고 표현할 수 없는 현실 비판이나 일탈의 욕망을 신선담 속에서 찾았다.
조선의 귀신, 요괴담이 사회적 이념과 타협하는 방식으로 기술되었다면, 명청대 『자불어』와 『요재지이』에는 자유로운 상상력이 넘쳐난다. 귀신, 요괴, 신선, 여우 등 온갖 비현실적 소재를 통해 부조리한 현실을 비판하고 풍자하는 동시에 당시 팽배하던 인간의 본성이나 정욕 중시의 태도를 드러내었다. 특히 일상의 규범이나 사회적 제도를 무너뜨리는 상상력이라 할 수 있는 시체와 신체훼손 등 엽기적 취향도 서슴지 않고 표현했다.
17, 18세기 한중 귀신 요괴담이 이러한 차이를 갖게 된 가장 근본적 이유는 창작 주체의 차이에서 기인한다. 조선의 임방과 신돈복은 노론측 인사로 당대의 주류에 속하지만 중국의 원매와 포송령은 문인이나 비주류에 속하며 가치관이나 사상적 지향이 매우 유연하며 자유로웠다. 또한 명청대 程朱理學에 반발해 인간 본연의 情慾이나 자유로운 감정을 강조하던 시대적 배경도 『요재지이』나 『자불어』와 같은 자유로운 상상력이 가능할 수 있었던 요인이었다.

영어초록

This study examined deviation and desire in the ghost and apparition tales of Chosun and China in the 17th and 18th century from the perspective of comparative cultural history. Cheonyerok and Haksanhaneon of Chosun demonstrate infinite interest in surrealistic beings but tended to emphasize the rational and logical explanations of ghosts and apparitions due to the rigid Sung-Confucian ideology of the times while telling ghost and apparition tales. In Chosun, while ghosts and apparitions were negative surrealistic beings, mountain wizards placed between god and ghost held positive significance among literary figures even though their implications were the denial of reality and desire for transcendence. Shin Don-bok, in particular, was devoted to the Taoist ideology, and his Haksanhaneon was in line with such devotion of his. He found criticism of reality and desire for deviation, which could not be expressed openly, in mountain wizard tales.
Unlike Chosun's ghost and apparition tales that were told in a compromising way with social ideology, Jabuleo and Yojaejii of Ming and Qing Dynasty are full of free imagination. They exhibit the dominant human nature and attitude of highlighting sexual desire in those days, criticizing and satirizing the irrational reality with all kinds of unrealistic materials including ghosts, apparitions, mountain wizards, and foxes. They were especially unhesitant about expressing a bizarre taste such as corpse and body damage, which was the product of imagination breaking down the daily norms and social institutions.
The most fundamental reason behind such differences in ghost and apparition tales between Chosun and China in the 17th and 18th century derives from different subjects of creation. While Im Bang and Shin Don-bok of Chosun belonged to the Noron society and the mainstream of the times, Won Mae and Po Song-ryeong of China did not belong to the mainstream even though they were literary figures. Their values and ideological orientations were very flexible and free. In addition, the period background of Ming and Qing Dynasty that emphasized the free emotions of man also contributed to the free imagination in Yojaejii and Jabuleo.
