한국 본생담(Jataka)의 분포와 향유 방식의 변화 (A study on distribution and bargaining of genre in korean Jataka)

초록

이 연구는 한국 본생담의 분포와 향유 방식의 변화가 갖는 의미를 문예적 관점에서 살피는 것이 주목적이다. 본생담은 전파 지역의 풍토에 맞게 변용되면서 다양한 영향을 주었다. 우리의 경우 본생담이 들어와 문학은 물론이고 문화예술 분야에도 적지 않은 영향을 주었다. 이 글은 그러한 변화와 영향을 한국의 문학과 문화예술의 관점에서 거시적으로 고찰한 다음 그 가치를 평가한 것이다. 논의한 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한국 본생담의 분포 양상을 개괄하였다. 여기에서는 본생담의 분포 양상을 문학의 유형에 따라 살펴보았다. 먼저 시가형의 본생담은 조선 초 국문불서에 틈입된 것을 대표적으로 들 수 있다. 서사형 본생담은 구비서사와 기록서사로 나누어 검토하였다. 구비서사는 민담형 설화에서, 기록서사는 형성기 및 난숙기 소설에서 확인할 수 있다. 연희형은 본생담은 신성연희와 세속연희로 나누어 검토하였다. 신성연희는 불교 및 무속연희에서, 세속연희는 판소리에서 각각 확인할 수 있다.
둘째, 한국 본생담의 장르 교섭과 향유 방식의 변화를 검토하였다. 이는 본생담이 포교와 오락의 목적을 위해 문학적으로 대응한 결과이다. 문학 내적으로는 시가형·서사형·연희형이 각각 교섭하면서 향유되었다. 시가형이 서사형과 연희형으로, 서사형이 시가형과 연희형으로, 연희형이 시가형과 서사형으로 각각 교섭하면서 향유되었다. 문학 외적으로는 본생담의 예술적 변화를 살폈다. 본생담은 전승과정에서 음악과 미술로 변화하였거니와 이들이 총화된 공연예술로도 변화하였다. 효과인 전승 및 향유를 위해 문학적인 변화를 모색한 것이다.
셋째, 한국 본생담의 문예적 전통과 가치를 검토하였다. 본생담은 전생담이라는 허구성 때문에, 그리고 교훈성과 흥미성을 가진 문학성 때문에 시기와 지역을 가리지 않고 즐겨 향유되었다. 그래서 전통적인 가치와 현재적인 가치를 모두 중시해야 한다. 전통적으로는 우리의 문학을 풍성하게, 그리고 통시적인 맥락을 분명하게 유지했다는 점에서 그 가치를 인정할 수 있다. 본생담이 여전히 유용한 자산이라는 점에서 현재와 미래적인 가치도 주목해야 한다. 본생담이 원형콘텐츠로 작용하면서 창작과 교육용 자료로 여전히 활용되기 때문에 현재와 미래의 가치를 새롭게 인식해야 한다.

영어초록

Jataka had various effects as it was transformed to suit the climate of the transmission area. In our case, Jataka came in and had a significant impact on literature as well as culture and art. In this study, jataka was examined macroscopically from the perspective of Korean literature and cultural arts, and then its value was evaluated. The summary of the discussion is as follows.
First, the distribution pattern of Korean Jataka literature was outlined. Here, the distribution aspect of Jataka literature was examined based on the three major genres of literature. First of all, the lyric genre's jataka is a poem type of verse, which was intruded into the Korean Buddhist Book in the early Joseon Dynasty. The prose type of narrative genre was divided into oral narratives of folktales and record narratives of novels to examine the distribution pattern. The oral epic can be seen in the folktale figure of the fable, and the record narrative can be seen in the novels of the formative period and the matured period. The genre of dramatic literature was divided into sacred drama literature and profane drama literature. Sacred drama literature can be seen in Buddhist and shamanic rituals, and secular drama literature can be seen in Pansori.
Second, the genre of Korean jataka changed in various ways during the distribution process. It is the result of responding flexibly by making genre changes for the purpose of missionary work and entertainment. Inside literature, lyric, narrative, and dramatic literature each showed genre negotiations through changes. The lyric genre was changed to the narrative genre and the theater genre, the narrative genre was changed to the lyric genre and the theater genre, and the theater genre was changed to the lyric genre and the narrative genre. Outside of literature, it was distributed as a jataka vocal mand instrumental music, and was also passed down as art such as murals as well as paintings. And they were also handed down as unified performances. All were necessary to effectively transmit and enjoy jataka.
Third, the significance of Korean Jataka literature in the history of literature was examined. Jataka was enjoyed regardless of the time and region because of the fictional nature of the story of the past life, and because of its lesson and interesting literary nature. Therefore, we must value both traditional and present values. Traditionally, we must acknowledge the value of our literature in that it has maintained a rich and diachronic context. Current value should be found in that Jataka is still useful content. Since Jataka acts not only as original content but also used as creative and educational content, the present value must be newly recognized.
