『雜記古談』의 科擧談 양상과 특징 (Aspects and Characteristics of the State Examination Stories in Jabgi-godam)

본 논문은 조선시대 科擧의 실상과 문화적 배경을 살피기 위해 任邁의 『雜記古談』에 담긴 科擧談에 주목하였다. 『雜記古談』은 24화로 구성되어 있으며, 이 중에서 10개의 일화가 과거담에 해당한다. 이러한 과거담에는 과거와 관련된 사회적 구조나 정치적 배경 등이 담겨 있는데 주된 특징은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 몰락양반·서자·평민과 같은 계층의 응시를 통해 명분보다는 생계를 우선시하는 점과 과거를 통한 출세의 욕망이 오히려 공고화되는 경향을 담고 있다. 이는 신분제의 混淆와 이에 따른 새로운 가치와 윤리가 형성되면서, 기존의 선비로서의 명분과 현실 대응 사이에서 균열된 틈을 보여주고 있다.
둘째, 儒生과 校生의 관계를 통해 조선후기 지방 교육을 현실을 파악할 수가 있다. 이와 함께 代述을 통해 과거 관련 법령이 강화되는 흐름에서 부정행위가 감소하기보다는 오히려 同接끼리 공동 답안 작성을 묵인하는 사회적 분위기도 알 수가 있다.
그 결과 지금까지 양반 계층에서만 이해되어왔던 應試文化를 평민의 측면에서도 살필 수 있었다. 아울러 서울 중심으로 한 응시문화를 넘어 지방 응시자의 입장도 확인할 수 있다. 그러므로 응시문화를 가장 폭넓게 이해할 수 있다는 측면에서 『雜記古談』 소재 과거담의 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the state examination stories in Im-mae’s Jabgi-godam to examine the reality and cultural background of state examination during the Joseon Dynasty. Jabgi-godam consists of a total of 24 episodes, 10 of which are the state examination stories. These stories show the following social structures and political backgrounds related to the state examination.
First, taking for the state examination of classes such as disgraced yangban, bastards, and commoners shows that a livelihood was prioritized over a justification and that the desire for success through the examination tended to be solidified. These tendencies reveal a formation of new values and ethics brought about by the chaos of the status system and a gap between the existing justification of literati-scholars and responses to reality.
Secondly, in the state examination stories it is possible to understand the reality of local education through the relationship between Yu Saeng(儒生) and Gyo Saeng(校生) in the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the stories confirm that a co-writing of an answer sheet among a group of fellow students was accepted in a social atmosphere and a cheating did not disappear, even though laws about the state examination were strengthened resulted from ghostwriting.
As a result, it is possible to examine a culture of the state examination from the perspective of commoners and bastards. Until now, it had been understood only by the perspective of Yangban-Literati. It also identifies that the situation of local applicants beyond just understanding the culture of the state examination centered on a capital city. Therefore, the state examination stories in Jabgi-godam are meaningful in that the stories allow us to understand the culture of the state examination the most extensively.
