『溪西雜錄』 所在 科擧談 硏究 (A Study on the State Examination Stories in 『『Gyeseojabrok(溪西雜錄)』)

초록

이 글은 『『溪西雜錄』』에 수록된 科擧談의 주제별 양상을 확인하고, 이 가운데 주요 특징을 통해 조선후기 科擧의 실상과 문화적 배경을 살피고자 하는 목적으로 작성되었다.
『『계서잡록』』에서 과거담에 해당하는 일화는 38개로, 꿈이나 운수와 같은 신이한 요소가 가미되어 허구성이 우세한 일화와 당대 현실이 반영되어 사실성이 우세한 일화가 병존하였다. 허구성이 우세한 일화에서는 꿈을 통해 급제하는 이야기가 두드러졌다. 야담에서 꿈은 운명과 욕망이 서로 맞물려 있지만, 『『계서잡록』』에서는 운명과 욕망은 분리되어 있었다. 이를 통해 꿈을 꾼 자의 욕망은 극대화되었고, 반면 실제 응시자의 욕망은 희석되는 방식이었다. 사실성이 우세한 일화에서는 科擧를 통한 인물의 구현과 현실비판이 주를 이루었다. 인물과 관련된 일화에서는 응시자 입장에서 바라본 科弊를 다양하게 담아냈다. 이와 함께 前代 야담집의 내용을 수용한 일화에서는 科擧와 관련된 조선후기 현실을 곡진히 반영하였다.
이를 통해 『『계서잡록』』 소재 과거담에는 급제에 대한 응시문화와 科弊와 관련된 현실 비판이 주를 이루었다는 점과 조선후기 변화된 양반층의 출세 의식을 통해서 이들의 균열된 科擧에 대한 시선을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the thematic aspects of the state examination stories in 『『Gyeseojabrok(溪西雜錄)』』 and to explore the reality and cultural background of the state examination through their key characteristics during the late Joseon period.
In 『『Gyeseojabrok』』, there are 38 anecdotes related to the state examination stories, which comprise both fictional narratives emphasizing supernatural elements like dreams and fate, and factual narratives reflecting the contemporary reality. In the fictional narratives, stories of passing the exam through dreams are particularly prominent. While dreams in Yadam(野談) are intertwined with destiny and desire, in 『『Gyeseojabrok』』, destiny and desire are distinctly separated. This separation maximizes the dreamer’s desires, whereas the actual examinees’ desires are deterritorialized. In the factual narratives, the focus is on the portrayal of individuals and criticism of reality through the state examination. Anecdotes about individuals concretely capture the harmful effects of the exam from the perspective of the examinees. Additionally, anecdotes that have adopted contents from earlier Yadam anthologies vividly reflect the realities of the state examination in the late Joseon period.
Through these findings, this paper identifies that the state examination stories in 『『Gyeseojabrok』』 highlight the blind exam-taking culture and criticism of reality about the harmful effects of the exam. The stories also reveal the divided viewpoints toward the exam of the yangban class in the late Joseon period, shedding light on their changing perception of success.
