초록

이 글은 『매일신보』 에 연재되었던 이해조의 신소설 <탄금대>가 과부 재가에 대한 당대 세태와 긍정하는 시선을 효과적으로 드러내기 위해 전대소설의 서사를 수용 및 변용하는 지점을 실증적으로 살펴보고자 한 것이다. <탄금대>는 전대소설 가운데 추노계 소설인 <김학공전>과 <신계후전>의 영향을 받아 만들어진 작품으로 알려져 왔다. 더 나아가 <박만득전>이라는 또 다른 추노계 소설이 만들어지는 데에도 영향을 끼쳤음이 알려져 왔다. 때문에 이해조가 과부 재가에 대한 당대 세태를 드러내고 그에 대한 긍정하는 시선을 보여주고자 할 때 전대소설의 서사 구조를 빌려오면서도 변별을 주는 부분들을 확인하는 것은 <탄금대>의 서사적 전략을 확인하는 것인 동시에 전대소설에 대한 이해조의 인식을 알 수 있게 해준다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this research paper is to conduct a comparative analysis between the narrative structure of classic novels and that of a new series novel containing total 38 episodes that Hae-jo Lee wrote in 『Maeilshinbo』 Newspaper from March 15, 1912 until May 1, 1912, and to find out the distinct features that these two novels have and account for the characteristics of the two, based on them. These classic and new novels are well-known as the literary work which has been influenced from a novel describing the processes in which punish a slave who had risen to revolts at a family dealing with an issue over women’s remarriage. And the two novels have a common feature in that they share the narrative structure combined with a story of Chuno (a story of hunting a slave fugitive) and a story of alliance, and at the same time, make each distinction. A story of Chuno (a story of hunting a slave fugitive) shows that a male central character has a weak will to revenge while his family has a strong will to rebuild the broken family structure whose processes are being transformed by the assistance from this man character’s father-in-law. Also a story of alliance describes a male central character who increases the number of women who have ties with him, and eventually loses his wife. This story presents various status and positions of the women appearing in the process of having ties with the man character so that we can consider the matter about the remarriage of women who are in various situations.
The changing patterns of the two stories, a story of Chuno (a story of hunting a slave fugitive) and a story of alliance, are significant in the sense that an independent and separate story of alliance forms organic narrative linkage and sheds light on the reality from multi-angles, in which a widow’s remarriage poses
