A Study on Metaphors of Nation in Political Discourse

초록

This study shows the way how conservatives and liberals’ ideologies are established and maintained both in Korean and American political rhetoric and their political discourses, by analyzing their conceptually structured metaphoric expressions held by the US and Korea’s conservative parties and liberals at the time when they faced three different affairs of the each state: national security, economy and society. To accomplish the goal this paper takes on carrying out an ideology analysis by examining the metaphorical language used in the discourse on each issue, and then connect that to George Lakoff’s (2002) theory of metaphors of nation including the ‘Nation-as-Family’ metaphors based upon two different models of family. According to Lakoff, in fact, those two different cognitive family models are a theoretical construct within cognitive science that explains two different aspects of American political life. At the heart of conservatism is there lies a belief in ultimate strict father morality like God. As the center of a hierarchical world in which morality is linked with power, father wants good people to be in charge. He therefore wants a hierarchical society in which there are moral ‘authorities’ who should be obeyed by its children or citizens. On the other hands, according to what Lakoff also insists, liberal ideology is believed to have been formed on the basis of the concept of Nurturant Parents, which emphasizes nurturing and empathy in parenting. This makes it clear that the two different political ideologies share not only quite the highly common grounds, but still own distinctive features of conceptual metaphors in the comparison of the ‘Nation’ as a family, respectively.
