<百歲老僧의 美人談(A Tale Of A Beauty Told By 100 Year's Monk)> is a posthumous novel written by 申采浩. This paper clarifies the original tale of the novel, analyzes the variation between the tale and novel, and checks the value of the novel. The tale of slaying underground monster(地下國大賊退治 說話), an old story spread widely in Korea, starts off with a woman being kidnapped by a monster, and then a man rescuing the woman. Then among the tales, there is a pattern of kidnapped wife seizing and locking the husband, and a female servant who gets kidnapped along with the husband rescuing the husband. <百歲老僧's 美人談> adapted this wife's betrayal type. Meanwhile <百歲老僧's 美人談> combined the original tale with the historical fact of Mongolian taking many Goryeo women during Goryeo dynasty. And <百歲老僧's 美人談> changes the tale with happy ending, which ends up with the marriage of husband and female servant into a tragic story which the female servant committing the suicide in order to enlighten the people that the tragedy of a nation is the tragedy of an individual. And the novel, reflecting the popular centered historical view, highlights the female servant as a hero. Also the novel applies the Rahmennovelle, and pursues the reality in settings and episodes. <百歲老僧's 美人談> expresses its theme appealing the recovery of sovereignty from the Japanese imperialism allegorically by using the past history. And the novel supports its enlightening theme by raising its popular interest using the techniques of modern novels. '地下國大賊退治 說話' has been used as a motif in old Korean novels, such as <崔致遠傳>, <金圓傳>, <Geum-bang-eul-jeon(금방울전)> etc. <百歲老僧의 美人談> is the novels which succeeds as a precedent. <百歲老僧의 美人談> is made by the author's firm intention to use a tale for novel, and this work is a good example showing the aspects of the succession between old and modern narratives.
