신데렐라와 달-소녀－죽음과 환생의 의미를 중심으로－ (Cinderella and Moon－Girl－Meanings of Death and Reincarnation－)

초록

신데렐라 유형의 이야기들은 거의 전 세계적인 분포를 보이며 현재까지도 다양한 방향에서 연구, 응용되고 있다. 그만큼 신데렐라 이야기들은 가장 심층적이며 가장 민담다운 설화들 가운데 한 유형으로서, 비밀스러운 의미 관련들과 함께 마법적인 요소가 이야기의 핵심을 이루고 있다.
민담에서 마법은 특히 깊은 밤과 연관을 맺고 있다. 신데렐라 이야기의 정점을 이루는 신발을 잃어버리는 상황도 한 밤중에 일어나며, 이 시간적 배경은 자정이라는 금기 시각으로 자연스럽게 연결된다. 밤에 행해지는 춤이나 의례는 주로 달과 관련이 있으며 농경의례와도 긴밀히 연관되어 있다. 아프리카나 인도네시아, 뉴기니 등, 최초의 농경이 시작되었던 지역들에서 행해졌던 마로 Maro－춤 마로Maro－춤은 남녀가 한 명씩 교차해서 행렬을 지어 나선형 미로를 따라 추는 윤무로, 선사시대에 희생제의 때 행해지던 춤으로 알려져 있다.
또는 미로(迷路)－춤이라는 춤이 있다. 이 춤은 밤에 남녀가 나선형 원을 따라 윤무를 추다가 동심원 가운데에 소녀를 땅에 묻어 살해함으로써 새로운 생명으로 환생하기를 기리는 농경의례의 한 형태였다.
신데렐라 이야기들에도 밤에 추는 무도회와 더불어 여성의 죽음과 환생의 모티프가 수용되어 있다. 엄밀히 말하면, 신데렐라 이야기들은 살해되었다가 다시 환생한 여성에 관한 설화들이다. 신데렐라 이야기라고 하면, 주로 ‘재투성이’ 모습이 강조된 유형이 일반에 널리 유포되어 있으나, 우리나라와 중국, 베트남 등의 신데렐라 이야기들은 여주인공이 계모나 이복언니들에게 살해 당했다가 다시 환생하는 이중 구조로 되어있다. 재를 바르고 아궁이 옆에서 지내는 신데렐라의 모습에서도 숨겨져 있는 죽음의 표상을 읽을 수 있다. 신화와 민담에서 살해란 새로운 세계의 창조를 위한 제의적 행위를 의미한다. 세계가 갱신되기 위해서 옛것은 소멸되어야 했다.
선사인들은 달의 끊임없는 반복으로부터 죽음과 환생의 싸이클을 발견했으며, 농경과 여성에게서도 동일한 자연 순환을 발견했다. 소녀들의 입문의례도 그 모든 의미를 달(月)에게서 가져왔기 때문에, 3일 동안 생리의 집에 격리된 소녀들은 그곳에서 죽음의 체현(體現)과 함께 결혼을 위한 예비적 준비들을 수행해야 했다. 신데렐라들의 죽음과 환생도 3일 동안 땅속으로 사라졌다가 다시 환생하는 달의 순환을 따르고 있으며, 무도회가 밤에 행해진 이유도 달의 속성을 이어받기 위한 춤이기 때문이다.
따라서 진짜신부의 입증이라는 특징적인 모티브를 담고 있는 신데렐라 유형의 민담들에 나타나는 여주인공의 살해는 타살과 환생의 제의적 살해의 의미를 함축하고 있으며, 삼 일 밤 동안 행해진 신데렐라의 무도회 역시 달－소녀의 죽음과 환생을 기리는 저 선사시대의 마로－춤으로 소급할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Showing an almost worldwide distribution, Cinderella-typed tales have been studied and applied in various ways until today. So, they could be called one of the most profound and folktale-like tales.
The tales are profound, since they have long been deposited, regenerated and deepened in secret connections of meanings; they are folktale-like, since their cores consist of magical factors. In folktales, magic is associated especially with deep night. Cinderella also loses her shoes in the middle of the night, which corresponds to the climax of the tale. To look for a bride, a prince opens a ball, which chiefly lasts from evening through next dawn. The “midnight” is a taboo point of time which Cinderella must not pass and by which the heroine has to recover her lost shoes.
Why was the ball held at night? Night dance is mainly related with the moon and agricultural rites. There was Maro－dance in Africa, Indonesia, New Guinea etc where agriculture began for the first time in the world. The dance was a form of agricultural rite in which people performed a spiral round dance and then killed a girl by burying her in the middle of a concentric circle, thus wishing for her reincarnation.
Cinderella-typed tales also contain the motifs of female death and reincarnation as well as night ball. Strictly speaking, a Cinderella tale is about a girl who is reborn after being killed. As far as Cinderella-typed tales are concerned, those whose heroines are “full of ashes” are widely distributed, but those in Korea, China and Vietnam have a dual structure in which heroines are reborn after they are killed by stepmothers or half sisters. The image of death can be also read in Cinderella who lives beside a furnace and is covered with ashes. Killing means a ritual act for creating a new world in myths and folktales. An old world should become extinct so that it can be renewed.
In ancient times, farmers found a cycle of death and reincarnation in the endless repetition of the moon and the same natural circulation in agriculture and females as well. Accordingly, the initiation rites of girls were always performed together with the segregation for death and the preparation for marriage. All the meanings were taken from the moon. The death and marriage of Cinderella also follow the circulation of the moon that disappears into the ground three days and then is reborn. Cinderella’s ball is held at night because the dance is done to succeed to the attributes of the moon.
Therefore, the killing of heroines, which is seen in Cinderella-typed folktales containing a characteristic motif of a real bride's verification, implies the meaning of a ritual killing that leads to reincarnation, and a three－night－long ball could also go back to the prehistoric Maro-dance that wished for death and reincarnation as moon-girl.
