고려시대 수월관음보살도의 달(月)표현 연구 (A Study on the Expression of the Moon in Water‐moon Avalokiteshvara Paintings in the Koryo Dynasty)

초록

이 논문은 고려시대 수월관음보살도 6점에서 보이는 특징적인 달의 표현에 대해 살펴보고, 달의 도상이 그려진 형성배경과 제작편년에 대해서 논하였다.
수월관음보살도는 10세기경의 돈황 출토 수월관음보살도에서 초기 도상이 확인되며, 그 외의 白居易(772~846)의 『白居易集』卷39「畵水月菩薩贊」詩題, 그리고 『歷代名畵記』卷3(847年, 張彦遠著)「記兩京外州寺觀書壁」勝光寺條의 고대 문헌자료에서 초기 도상의 특징이 언급되었다. 그러나 이러한 초기 도상과 기록에서 수월관음보살도의 달 도상에 대한 근거를 찾기는 어려웠다. 이에 일부 학자들은 보살을 두르고 있는 큰 圓光을 달로 해석하지만, 이는 여러 현존하는 작품과 기록을 참고할 때 달의 표현으로 보기 보다는 身光으로 보는 것이 맞을 것으로 판단되었다.
초기 돈황 출토 수월관음보살도에서 보이지 않던 달의 도상은 8세기경의 수월관음보살도 이외의 관음보살도 등에서 나타나기도 하며, 이후 12세기 서하 유림굴 제2굴(主室 西壁 北側)의 수월관음보살도에서도 보인다. 그러나 고려시대 수월관음보살도에서 보이는 달의 표현과는 차이를 가졌고, 이 외의 수월관음보살도에서는 잘 확인되지 않았다.
고려시대 수월관음보살도 6점에서 보이는 달의 표현은 크게 두 종류로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 하나는 金彩와 金線으로 그려진 단순한 보름달 또는 초승달의 표현이고, 또 다른 하나는 계수나무 아래서 방아를 찧고 있는 토끼가 보름달 안에 그려진 것이었다. 토끼가 그려진 도상은 상당히 유사한 것으로 보이지만, 그 표현에 있어서는 약간의 차이를 보이며 각 작가의 개성이 드러나 있었다. 그리고 토끼가 묘사된 달은 일반적인 흰색의 달이 아닌 붉은 색의 달로 표현되는 특징을 보였는데, 이러한 특징은 수월관음도 이외의 고려시대 불교회화에서도 확인되었다.
그리고 고려시대 수월관음보살도 가운데 제작년도를 알 수 있는 작품을 중심으로 전체적인 도상을 살펴봄과 동시에 특징적인 달이 묘사된 여러 주제의 고려시대 불교회화를 달이 표현된 수월관음보살도와 비교해 볼 때, 달 도상은 일정한 형식의 수월관음보살도가 성립된 이후에 추가 표현된 것으로 여겨졌다. 그리고 달의 표현이 추가된 수월관음보살도는 40여점의 수월관음보살도의 도상변화를 참고 할 때, 대략 1323년경을 넘어서 1350년경 전으로 이루어진 것으로 추정되었다.
또 달 토끼 도상은 중국 한나라의 민간신앙에 영향을 받았지만, 나름의 도상을 정립해 나간 평양계열의 고구려 고분벽화의 영향아래 특징적인 달의 도상이 만들어졌을 가능성이 높아 보였다. 그리고 그러한 도상이 이후의 고려 불교회화에도 영향을 줄만큼 고려사회에 민간신앙으로 자리 잡고 있었음을 짐작할 수 있었다.
이와 같은 달의 도상은 비록 부분적인 도상에 불구하지만, 고려시대 불교회화의 성격은 물론 고려사회의 민간 신앙을 일러주는 도상이며 더불어서 불교회화와 민간신앙과의 관계성 및 제작시기를 추정하는 것에 있어서도 중요한 도상으로서 그 의미는 크다고 판단되었다.

영어초록

This study examined the characteristic expression of the moon in six water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings from the Koryo Dynasty, and discussed the background and date related to how the icon of the moon was developed.
The early icons of water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings are found in the paintings created in around 10th century excavated from Dunhuang, and besides, the characteristics of early icons are mentioned in ancient literature such as the title of poem Hwasuwolbosalchan (畵水月菩薩贊) in Volume 39 of Baek Geo‐yeok’s (白居易; 772~846) Baekgeoyeokjip (白居易集), and the Articles of the Seunggwang‐sa Temple (勝光寺條) in Volume 3 Giryanggyeongoejusagwanseobyeok (記兩京外州寺觀書壁) (written by Jang Eon‐won (張彦遠) in 847) of Yeokdaemyeonghwagi (歷代名畵記). However, it was hard to find the origin of the moon icons of water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings in such early icons and records. With regard to this, some researchers interpreted the large circle of light surrounding the Bodhisattva as the moon, but according to several works and records extant, it was considered appropriate to interpret it as vali‐cakra (身光) rather than as an expression of the moon.
The icon of the moon, which was not found in the water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings excavated early from Dunhuang, began to appear in Avalokiteshvara paintings in addition to water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings created in the 8th century, and it is also seen in the water‐moon Avalokiteshvara painting in the 2nd cave of the Yulin Grottoes from the Western Xia Dynasty in the 12th century(on the northern side of the western wall of the main hall). However, it is different from the expression of the moon observed in water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings from Koryo Dynasty, and is hardly visible in other water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings.
The expression of the moon in the six water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings from the Koryo Dynasty is divided largely into two types. One is the expression of a full moon or a crescent drawn with gold powder (金彩) and gold line (金線), and the other is the expression of a full moon with inside a rabbit pounding rice in a mortar under a cinnamon tree. The icons with a rabbit are quite similar with one another, but each of them shows a slight difference in expression and exposes the painter’s character. In addition, the moons with a rabbit are not the usual white moon but are expressed as a red moon, and this characteristic is observed not only in the water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings but also in other Buddhist paintings in the Koryo Dynasty.
In addition, this study examined the icons of the water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings, focusing on the works whose date of creation is known, and at the same time, compared other Koryo Buddhist paintings of different themes that expressed the moon characteristically with the water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings expressing the moon. According to the results, the moon icon is believed to have been added after the style of water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings was established. What is more, considering the changes of icon in some 40 water‐moon Avalokiteshvara paintings, it is estimated that the expression of the moon was added in 1323 at earliest and in around 1350.
The rabbit icon in the moon was an influence of folk beliefs in the Han Dynasty of China, but it is highly likely that the characteristic icon of the moon was developed under the influence of Kokuryo mural paintings in the line of Pyeongyang, which established its own icons. This also suggests that the icon was settled as a folk belief in the Koryo society until it influenced Buddhist paintings created afterwards.
