초록

〈마곡사 사천왕상〉은 높이가 390㎝의 중대형 크기이며 소조로 되어 천왕문 벽과 지붕에 지탱하여 조성되었다. 지금껏 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉은 복장발원문이 사라져 조각승을 명확히 알 수 없었다. 하지만 서방 광목천왕 좌대 내부 기둥의 ‘康熙⼆⼗三年 癸亥 三⽉ 五⽇’ 묵서명과 영산전 목조칠불좌상에서 복장발원문이 발견되면서 조성 시기와 조각승을 명확히 알 수 있게 되어 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉 조각승을 추정하는데 좋은 자료로 삼을 수 있게 되었다.
이 글은 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉의 조각승 단응 가능성을 밝히고 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉이 조선 후기 조각사에서 갖는 의의를 알아보는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 이에 단응 작품과 비교하여 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉을 ‘단응’이 주도하여 조성했을 가능성을 밝혔다. 〈마곡사 영산전 목조칠불좌상〉과 방형의 얼굴과 귀모양에서 친연성을 보였던 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉은 〈예천 용문사 명부전 금강역사상〉, 〈예천 용문사 사천왕상〉, 〈안동 광흥사 명부전 금강역사상〉의 복식과도 유사했고 〈청도 적천사 사천왕상〉과 〈하동 쌍계사 사천왕상〉과 단응의 후기 양식 측면에서 함께 살펴보기도 했다. 따라서 필자는 단응 작품과 특징 비교를 통해 〈마곡사 사천왕상〉을 단응이 조성했을 것으로 보았고 조선 후기 사천왕상 제작에 있어 단응이 중요한 위치에 있던 조각승이었다는 점을 밝히고자 하였다.

영어초록

The Statues of the Four Guardian Kings at Magoksa Temple stand at a height of 390 centimeters, classifying them as medium to large in size. These statues were crafted through the method of molding and are supported along the walls and roof of the Cheonwangmun. The identity of their sculptor has remained ambiguous due to the loss of the original prayer text for enshrinement. However, recent discoveries, including the inscription “5 March, Kangxi Twenty-third Year of Gyehae” on the inner pillar of the pedestal for the Western Kwangmok Guardian King and the recovery of the original enshrinement prayer text, have contributed to our understanding of the sculptor and the time of construction. This serves as a reliable source for estimating the sculptor of the Statues of Four Guardian Kings of Magoksa.
This study aims to reveal the possible identification of the sculptor of the Statues and to explore their significance within the history of late Joseon sculpture. By comparing with the known works of Daneung, this study suggests a possibility that the Statues of the Four Guardian Kings of Magoksa were created by him. The Magoksa Statues of Four Guardian Kings showed affinities with the Magoksa Wooden Statues of Seven Buddhas in the shape of the rectangular face and ears. Additionally, their costume design was also similar to the costumes of the Vajrapani Statue of Yongmunsa Temple in Yecheon, the Statues of Four Guardian Kings of Yecheon Yongmunsa Temple, and the Vajrapani Statue of Gwangheungsa Temple in Andong. Furthermore, the Statues of Four Guardian Kings of Jeokcheonsa Temple in Cheongdo and the Statues of Four Guardian Kings of Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong were examined together in terms of Daneung’s later style. Therefore, through a comparative analysis of stylistic features, this study demonstrates that Daneung was likely the creator of the Statues of Four Guardian Kings at Magoksa Temple and establishes his significance in the production of Statues of Four Guardian Kings during the late Joseon Dynasty.
