In modern Chinese literature, Mu Dan(穆旦, 1918-1977) is the poet who has built the world of the most distinctive his own poetry. In particular, about the tension between personal existence consciousness and national historical reality, and metaphysical anguish and transcendent imagination about life and death, and its delicate poetic language appearing in his poem of the 1940s, Anti-Japanese War period, now various analyses and studies have been done.. Among them, the subject of much discussion and awareness raising new problems is the Christian religiousness contained in his poetry.
In fact, in his early poems, There were works with Romanticism that described the real life of separation and deportation from God by the human original sin, and an earnest longing for reconciliation with God and return to God. And in his representative religious poetry “Revelation(隱現)”, The prayer of salvation towards God, the source of eternal life, beyond the limitations and finiteness of life and human evil source of war and death, was drawn on most movingly.
After all, a series of religious poetry of Mu Dan including “Revelation”, was the artistic flower filled with precedent intelligence and passion of Chinese intellectuals during the anti-Japanese war period, created in a cultural climate with the constant interaction or conflict through the revolutionary discourse of nationalism and Marxism of the 1940s.
