백담사 목조아미타여래좌상의 복장 기록 분석 (Analysis of Bokjang records preserved inside the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Baekdamsa Temple in Inje)

초록

본 논문은 인제 백담사 목조아미타여래좌상의 조성발원문(1748년) 2점과 중수 기록 2점(1885년)을 분석한 것으로, 그동안 학계에 간략하게만 소개된 복장 기록을 자세하게 다루었다.
백담사 목조아미타여래좌상은 1748년 5월에 공사를 시작해 7월에 완료한 존상으로, 왕실과 관련이 깊은 조각승 印性이 보조 장인 14명과 함께 조성한 것이다. 원 봉안처는 강원도 平康 寶月寺이며, 1748년 조성 당시에는 석가여래ㆍ약사여래ㆍ아미타여래로 구성된 석가여래삼불상이었다. 그런데 현재는 세 불상 중 석가여래상은 서울 봉국사에, 약사여래상은 고성 화암사에, 아미타여래상은 백담사에 분산되어 있다.
<조성발원문 1> 내용 가운데 무려 5명의 승려가 誦呪로서 참여한 것은 호암 체정의 영가 천도를 위한 목적과 시주자였던 和平翁主가 불상이 완성되기 직전인 6월 24일에 사망해 그녀의 영가천도를 겸한 것으로 해석했다.
<조성발원문 2>의 내용 중 승려 靈谷 永愚가 병고로부터 벗어나기 위해 다라니를 필사했고, 大隨求陀羅尼를 인경해 납입했다는 사실은 봉국사 목조석가여래좌상에서 수습된 복장 다라니를 통해 알 수 있었다.
그동안 학계에 보고되지 않았던 <중수기록 1>은 고성 화암사의 승려 春潭 法咸이 폐허로 변한 평강 보월사에서 1882년에 약사여래상과 아미타여래상을 화암사로 옮겨와 1885년에 개금ㆍ중수해 봉안한 사실을 알려 주었고, 백담사 목조아미타여래좌상은 화암사로부터 이안되었음을 확인케 해준다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 이와 함께 백담사 목조아미타여래좌상의 발원문과 중수 원문의 분석은 조선시대 불상이 원 봉안처에서 여러 사찰로 분산된 이동 경로를 고찰하는데도 중요한 자료를 제공하고 있다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the two Balwonmun on Creation of the Buddha Statue (1748) –a handwritten document that records the purpose of creating the Buddha statue(s), the wishes of the donors, and a list of names those who participated in the project –and the two Balwonmun on Refurbishiment of the Buddha Statue(1885) from the the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Baekdamsa Temple in Inje, and covers in detail the Bokjang records that have only been briefly revealed.
The creation of the Baekdamsa wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue began in May 1748 and was completed in July. The Amitabha Buddha statue was created by Inseong(印性), a monk sculptor closely related to the royal family, along with 14 assistant craftsmen. The original enshrinement site is Bowolsa Temple in Pyeonggang, Gangwon-do, and at the time of its construction in 1748, it was created as a Sakyamuni Buddha Triad consisting of Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha. However, currently, among the three Buddha statues, the Shakyamuni Buddha statue is distributed at Bongguksa Temple in Seoul, the Medicine Buddha statue is distributed at Hwaamsa Temple in Goseong, and the Amitabha Buddha statue is distributed at Baekdamsa Temple.
According to the contents of <Balwonmun on Creation of the Buddha Statue 1>, as many as five monks participated as offering prayers.
This is interpreted that the donor, Princess Hwapyeong, died on June 24 just before the statue was completed, so the instillation ceremony for the Buddha statue was also held as a spirit transfer ceremory for her.
The contents of <Balwonmun on Creation of the Buddha Statue 2> records the fact that the monk Yeong-gok Yeong-woo (靈谷 永愚) copied the Dharani by hand to free himself from illness, printed the Sugudharani( 大隨求陀羅尼) from the scripture plate, and enclosed it in the Buddha statue.
According to <Balwonmun on Refurbishiment of the Buddha Statue 1>, which had not been reported until now, the monk Chundam Beopham of Hwaamsa Temple in Goseong moved the Medicine Buddha and Amitabha Buddha statues from the ruined Pyeonggang Bowolsa Temple to Hwaamsa Temple in 1881, and enshrined at Hwaamsa Temple after refurbishing them in 1885. This fact is significant in that it allows us to know that the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Baekdamsa Temple was moved from Hwaamsa Temple.
