윤동주와 다문화적 주체성의 문학 (Multicultural Subjectivity in Yun Dong-ju's Literature)

초록

윤동주를 저항시인으로 규정하는 것은 단일문화적 주체성의 관점이 개입한 것이다. 이것은 근대문학사의 연속성 확보를 위해서 윤동주를 민족문학의 대표주자로 끌어들인 결과이다. 하지만 이때는 윤동주가 만주국 출신이라는 사실이 무시된다. 만주는 식민지 조선의 연장선상이라 생각하기 때문이다. 하지만 국문학의 연구대상이 유․이민자, 디아스포라, 다문화주의 연구 등으로 영역을 확장하면서 만주를 바라보는 관점에 변화가 생겼다. 윤동주가 만주국 출신이라는 사실이 새삼 부각된 것이다. 윤동주가 시인으로 활동할 무렵 조선에서는 ‘만주 유토피아니즘’이 확산되어 많은 지식인, 농민들이 환상을 품고 만주로 이주하던 때였다. 만주는 조선에서 불가능한 꿈이 성취될 수 있는 낙원으로 상상되었다. 이것은 만주국의 건국 이념인 ‘오족협화’에 대한 지나친 기대감에서 파생한 것이다. 만주에서는 조선인이 다른 민족과 평등한 대접을 받고, 고유한 문화를 보존할 수 있으리라는 생각이 깔려 있었던 것이다. 그리하여 제국의 이념을 신뢰하고 이주하는 사람들 사이에서는 친일의 논리를 이용하여 저항의 가능성을 찾으려는 사람들, 말하자면 협력을 통한 저항이라는 이중적 전략을 구사하려는 사람들도 모여들었다. 하지만 윤동주는 그 무렵 평양 유학의 실패를 통해 만주 이데올로기의 허구성을 목격하였고, 만주에서도 조선인으로 살기 어려울 뿐 아니라 내선일체가 강화되는 조선에서는 일본인으로 살기를 강요받게 될 것임을 예감하였다. 어디에서건 조선인이 되기 위해서는 만주국민이 되거나 일본인이 되어야 하는 모순적 상황에 처한 것이다. 이러한 모순적 상황을 자신의 주체성의 일부로 받아들인 윤동주는 단일문화적 주체성에서 찾아볼 수 없는 ‘복수의 주체성’을 경험하게 된다. 하지만 그것은 일본 유학을 통해서 다시 ‘공허한 주체성’으로 전환되는데, 이는 조선인도 일본인도 아닌 주체성 부재의 상태로 살아가고 있음을 보여준 것이다. 윤동주가 친일도 저항도 불가능했던 데에는 이러한 주체성 부재, 혹은 주체를 결정지을 수 없는 복수의 주체성이 그 원인으로 작용한 것이다.

영어초록

It is merely with an infusion of a monocultural subjective perspective that Yun Dong-ju is viewed as 'a poet of the resistance.'Especially, it seems inevitable to picture him as the representative poet of national literature in order to fill the gap in Korean literature history in the late colonial period. Thus, with emphasis on national literature,it is naturally disregarded that he was born in Manchuria considered a part of the colonized Joseon Dynasty (Korea). As research topics in Korean literature extensively include immigrants, diaspora, and multi-culturalism, however, how to define the place comes into question. Accordingly, it results in paying attention to Yun's birthplace once again. When Yun is active in the literary world as a poet,'Manchuria utopianism' is disseminated in Joseon. As a result of the prevailing belief, many intellectuals and peasants emigrate to Manchuria with a new hope that they consider Manchuria a promised land for their dreams which can be hardly realized in Joseon. It mostly derives from an excessive expectation of 'Five Peoples' Harmony,' the founding principle of Manchukuo. Koreans are told that they are allowed to live on terms of equality and harmony with other peoples and keep their tradition and culture in Manchuria. Indeed, some emigrants, who have trust in the Japanese imperial propaganda, firmly believe that there are the possibilities of resistance even in their pro-Japanese collaboration. In other words, they fancy that they are able to skillfully juggle the duel strategy called 'resistance to the empire through collaboration with it.'However, at that time, Yun comes to be aware of Manchurian ideological falsehood through his experience and failure while studying in Pyongyang. Not only does he observe that it is difficult for Koreans to be Korean in Manchuria; but also he reads that they would be forced to completely discard their Korean identity and transform themselves to be Japanese in Joseon as Japanese colonialistic policies in the name of the 'oneness of Korean and Japan' are reinforced and intensified. Put differently, Koreans are confronted with an conflict situation in which they should become either Manchurian or Japanese to keep their Korean identity anywhere or everywhere. By embracing such the ironic condition as part of his subjectivity, Yun experiences 'multiple subjectivity' in contrast to monocultural subjectivity. In turn,while studying in Japan, he re-experiences 'empty subjectivity,' that is,the absence of subjectivity in which he cannot be either Korean or Japanese. In the end, it is impossible for Yun to be pro-Japanese or anti-Japanese primarily due to the absence of subjectivity or the presence of multiple subjectivity which makes it hard to define the subject.
