흑인영가에 기초한 존 카터의 『칸타타』에 관한 연구 - 노랫말에 투영된 하나님의 정의에 대한 고찰 - (An Analytical Study of John Carter's Cantata based on Negro Spirituals - Interpretation of God's Justice Revealed in Words -)

초록

20세기에 접어들며 흑인영가는 다양한 작곡가들에 의한 음악적 재해석과 탁월한 연주자들의 연주로 한껏 예술성이 고취되고 있다. 실로 흑인노예들의 찬양 정도로 여겨지던 흑인영가가 재즈와 클래식 음악을 망라한 다양한 장르와의 접목을 통해 명실공이 세계인의 민요 또는 클래식 음악으로 자리매김하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 음악적 부각 이면에는 이에 상응하는 흑인영가에 대한 역사서나 흑인 신학적 측면에서의 심화된 연구가 활성화 되어 있지 않아 오히려 흑인영가 본연의 영성에 대한 이해는 희석되는 느낌이다.
이에 본고는 흑인영가에 기초 작곡된 존 다니엘 카터(John Daniels Carter, 1932-1981)의『칸타타』를 신학적 성찰의 관점에서 분석하고 노랫말에 투영된 하나님의 정의(正義)를 규명하여 흑인영가 전반에 대한 이해를 고양시키고자 한다. 흑인영가의 역사성과 신학적인 배경 설명을 위해 흑인 신학적 관점에서 ‘백인 그리스도’와 ‘흑인 그리스도’란 논지로 이분화하여 연구를 전개하며, 그 결과로 흑인영가에 투영된 가장 보편적인 ‘하나님의 정의’는 종말론적이며 내세지향적임을 역설한다.
『칸타타』노랫말에 투영된 하나님의 정의는 ‘종말론적인 하나님의 정의’와 ‘고통과 죽음 중에 현현하시는 하나님의 정의’로 분류하고 차후 흑인영가 내용 분석에 적용될 수 있는 비교의 준거로 제시한다. 또한 노예제도의 당위성을 성경적으로 증명하기 위해 자행된 백인 노예주들의 성경해석의 오류를 지적하고, 하나님의 정의는 하늘에서 완성될 종말론적인 상급일 뿐만 아니라 이 땅에서부터 이루어져 가는 진행형이어야 함을 강조한다.
끝으로 흑인영가의 음악적 특징 요약과『칸타타』노랫말에 투영된 ‘하나님의 정의’ 분석을 통해 흑인영가를 남북전쟁의 잔혹함이 남긴 가장 아름다운 반전임을 역설한다. 즉 절망에 굴복하지 않는 고매한 인간의 존엄성을 실증하는 음악, 하나님의 정의를 인내하며 소망하는 기다림의 음악 등으로 흑인영가를 정의하고, 차후 흑인 노예들의 고통과 죽음의 흔적들이 지나간 역사가 되지 않도록 흑인영가에 대한 진지한 이해가 동반된 음악 연주와 신학적 연구가 활발히 이어지기를 기대한다.

영어초록

God's justice is not an easy task to investigate as a theological theme in the context of musical works. It is because the nature of music itself is of value neutrality. In order to search for the theme of God's justice in music we need either to analyze the musical works based on the story dealing with justice or to explore the musical works favored by the oppressed who are eager after the God's justice to be implemented in real life.
The negro spirituals of the Christianized Afro-American slaves, who had been subjugated and been suffered for a long period time to a massive slavery and for the social and political unjust law of human exploitation, satisfy these conditions. In fact, the great majority of negro spiritual texts are avid reflections of the ordinary Christian slaves tortured from their miserable lives as well as ardent eagerness for God's justice, which is mostly apocalyptic and eschatological to be fulfilled in heaven.
To begin with, this paper seeks to map a historical overview of the black theological thought in Negro spirituals and God's Justice revealed in their words and texts. It shows a wide spectrum of theological, poetical and indigenous characteristics of the contents ranging from the most glorious eschatological expectation to the deadly pessimistic view of life.
To our surprise, negro spirituals are the amazingly beautiful inheritance of the brutal past of American Civil War. Especially John Carter's "Cantata" is of special interest to represent the renewal and rearrangement of existing negro spirituals. In this regard, Carter's work can be a prime subject of theological and of musicological investigations, and his achievements could to be appreciated theologically as well as musically. Through Cater's "Cantata" the suffering and poignant cry of the slaves become a dynamic demonstration of theological speculation and musical enhancement.
From a musical viewpoint, this essay has a purpose to prove the artistic achievement of John Carter's "Cantata." While reinterpreting negro spirituals, Carter has preserved the original spirituality of existing negro spirituals against the secularization. He also maintained the highly inspired artistic quality of music through various ways. The technical freedom inspired from jazz to esoteric 20th century classical music is remarkably flourishing all the way through the "cantata." Cater's compositional style analyzed in this work can be summarized as follows: 1)a variety of harmonic languages made enormous sound effect by frequent use of dissonance, quarter harmonies, hexachord, and tone clusters, 2)obscure tonality is properly created by combining of tonal, atonal, modal, and blues/pentatonoc scale system, and 3)rhythmic complexity which symbolizes African native music kindles music to passion. In conclusion, Carter's "Cantata" demonstrates that negro spirituals are not only mere religious hymns but also could be elevated to the appropriate concert music. In short, it proves the wise saying of "people's music becomes classical" to be true.
