부자 패망담 중 <장자못>과 <며느리의 손님 끊기> 유형 비교 (A Comparison of the Type and of Stories of the Ruined Rich)

초록

이 논문은 부자 패망담 중 <장자못>과 <며느리의 손님 끊기> 유형의 서사 구조와 그 속에 담긴 비유적인 의미를 비교 분석한 것이다. 먼저 두 유형의 서사 구조를 비교 분석하여 <장자못>과 <며느리의 손님 끊기>가 부자 패망담의 유형적 틀 속에서 밀접한 관련을 지니고 있는 이야기임을 밝혔다.
다음은 두 유형의 서사 구조에서 차이를 보이는 부분들에 내재되어 있는 의미를 살펴보았다. 부자에 대한 형상화 방식, 부자가 망하는 과정, 며느리의 역할 등의 차이에는 각각 부의 권력 유지와 관련된 자질이나 조건, 부자가 지닌 부의 속성, 중간자로서의 며느리의 위치 등에 대한 은유가 내포되어 있었다. 은유적으로 보면 <장자못> 유형은 부를 둘러싼 내부와 외부의 이원적인 대립을 보여주는 이야기이다. 여기서의 며느리는 외부적 속성을 지닌 중간자이다. <며느리의 손님 끊기> 유형에서는 내부에 종속된 부의 유지를 위해 내부와 외부가 경계를 사이에 두고 복잡하게 상호 작용한다. 여기서의 며느리는 가문에서 지위를 획득한 내부자이다.
마지막으로 설화 속에 담긴 현실적이고 시대적인 의미를 밝히기 위해 인접한 현실 문제들을 살펴보았다. <장자못> 유형은 부에 대한 관념론적인 인식, 외부자의 속성을 지니는 며느리 등의 사회 현실과 연결되어 있다. 이를 통해 부자의 자질을 갖추지 못한 인색한 장자는 며느리의 행동과 관계없이 망한다는 인식을 담아내고 있다. 반면 <며느리의 손님 끊기> 유형은 현실적인 관점에서의 부에 대한 인식과 내부자로서 자리를 잡은 며느리의 모습이 결합되어 있다. 이를 통해 외부와 교류하지 못하고 손님을 끊는 집안은 망한다는 인식을 담아내고 있다.
이상의 논의를 통해 부자 패망담의 두 유형이 부를 둘러싼 시대 현실의 각기 다른 관점과 더불어 설화 향유층의 의식을 비유적으로 담아내고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the narrative structure of <Jangjamot> and <Daughter-in-law's Guest Blocking>, which are types of the stories of the ruined rich and to examine the intrinsic meaning and realistic meaning contained in them. First, the narrative structure of the two types was compared and analyzed to reveal that <Jangjamot> and <Daughter-in-law's Guest Blocking> are closely related types of narratives.
And we examined the meaning implied in the differences in the narrative structure of the two types. The way of shaping the rich, the process in which the rich are ruined, and the role of the daughter-in-law involve the metaphor about the qualities or conditions related to the power retention of wealth, properties of wealth of the rich and the position of a daughter -in-law as an in-between. Metaphorically, the <Jangjamot> type is a story that shows the dual confrontation between inside and outside over wealth. The daughter-in-law herein is an in-between with external properties. In the type of <Daughter-in-law's Guest Blocking>, it appears that the outside is subordinate to the inside, and the inside and the outside also interact in a complex way across the boundary. The daughter-in-law herein is an insider who has acquired the status in the family.
Finally, we examined the social situation of those days to reveal the realistic meaning in the tale. The type of <Jangjamot> is connected with social reality such as ideological perception of wealth and daughter-in-law with the attributes of an outsider. This shows the perception that the stingy eldest son who does not have the qualities of a rich man will be ruined regardless of the daughter-in-law's behavior. On the other hand, the type of <Daughter-in-law's Guest Blocking> combines the perception of wealth from a realistic point of view and the appearance of a daughter-in-law who has settled as an insider. This expresses the perception that a family which blocks guests without communicating with the outside is ruined.
Through the above discussion, it can be seen that the two types of the stories of the ruined rich metaphorically express the perception of tale readers with the different perspectives of the era reality surrounding the wealth.
