섬유예술 비엔날레의 대표적인 입체표현 기법 연구 - 로잔느&베이징 국제 섬유비엔날레 작품을 중 심으로 - (Study of the Representative Three-Dimensional Expression Techniques in Fiber Art Biennale - focused on Lausanne and Beijing international fiber art biennale -)

초록

현대 섬유예술은 전통적인 공예 분야에서 벗어나 응용미술의 영역만이 아닌 순수조형의 표현형식으로확장되었다. 그리하여 오늘날 섬유예술의 현대적 표현에서는 입체기법을 활용한 다양한 작품들을 접할수 있다. 본 연구는 섬유 비엔날레 속 작품들에 사용된 입체적 표현기법들을 표현형식에 따라 분류 및분석하였고, 이를 통해 섬유예술이 어떠한 방식으로 현대 미술의 독자적인 장르로 입지를 굳혔는지 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 논문의 연구방법은 1960년대부터 1995년까지 개최된 ‘로잔느 국제 섬유비엔날레(Lausanne International Fiber Art Biennale)’와 2000년대에 들어서 로잔느 비엔날레의 연장선으로 여겨지는 ‘베이징 국제 섬유 비엔날레(Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale)’에 출품된 작품들중 조각적 개념이 구현된 작품들을 관련 서적, 카달로그, 웹사이트 등을 통해 선별하였고, 이러한 작품들의 기법적 특징을 분석하였다. 작품 속 기법과 재료를 기준으로 입체표현기법을 분류 및 분석한 결과 전통적 입체표현 기법으로는 타피스트리, 마크라메, 래핑과 코일링, 크로셰와 니팅 등이 있으며 연이어 현대적인 표현기법으로는 열, 레진, 플라스틱 소재, 디지털 프린트 등 현대 사회에서 예술재료로 가능성을내포한 재료들을 일상 속에서 가져와 실험적인 시도를 통해 재료의 범위가 다각화되었음을 알 수 있다.
섬유예술에 있어서 두 비엔날레는 전통 기법과 현대재료의 융합으로 재료의 물성을 살려 원재료가 지닌표현적인 힘을 조직화시켰고, 확장된 재료를 입체표현기법을 통해 공간과 환경예술에 접목시켜 독자적인 장르로서의 체계를 확립시켰다. 따라서 본 연구는 전통적 섬유표현기법에 현대 사회의 산업화 재료가녹아들어 나타나는 새로운 표현형식에 주목하고, 기법적 측면에서 섬유 조형기법의 확장성과 그 의의를살펴봄으로써 향후 현대 섬유예술 속 입체표현의 다양한 발전방안에 대해 알아보고자 한다.

영어초록

Modern fiber art has stemmed from the traditional craft field and expanded into as a genre of fine art, not being bounded only as a field of applied art. Particularly, in the modern fiber art we are able to easily find various works expressed in three-dimensional techniques. In this study, we classified the three-dimensional expressions in Fiber Art Biennale according to expression and analyzed the process in which fiber art became a genre of contemporary art. In addition, we investigated and analyzed new challenges and experimental attempts introduced in the sculpture works which were selected among the exhibitions at two Biennales: Lausanne International Fiber Art Biennale which has been held from 1960 to 1995 and Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale which was inherited the Lausanne Biennale. The works were selected through related books, catalogs, and websites, and the characteristics of expression techniques of these works were analyzed. In view point of materials, in two Biennales, not only the conventional 3D expression techniques, such as Tapestry weaving, Macrame, Wrapping and Coiling, Crochet and Knitting, were observed, but also the modern new materials were found to be used for new diverse mixture mediums, such as heat, resins, plastics, digital printing materials, both of which did extend the scope of materials and novel technological methods. Two Biennales also showed the well ensemble of conventional techniques well coupling with modern materials. Thus the works expressed the intrinsic nature of original material well by organizing it into the compounding mixture with such modern materials. Such extending materials fused with 3D sculpture expression technique to implanted with the space and environmental arts have helped the fiber art to stand alone as a novel branch of modern arts uniquely. Herein, based on these observations, we tried to discuss the power of new methods of modern material mixture with fibers and new expression techniques and then will propose the value of this new trend and guide the future directions of modern fiber arts.
