초록

본고는 레슬리 뉴비긴의 선교신학을 중심으로 ‘현대문화 속에서 복음의 공공성 회복을 위한 교회의 선교적 과제’에 관한 연구다. 뉴비긴은 35년간의 인도 선교사역을 마치고 영국으로 돌아왔을 때 교회가 복음의 진리를 증거하는 일에 겁에 질려 있는 모습을 발견하게 되었다. ‘기독교국가’(Christendom)라는 위용은 사라지고 타종교인들이 더 열성적으로 서구유럽사회에 선교적 도전을 가하고 있는 현상을 목격하면서 현대문화 속에서 교회가 갖는 선교적 과제를 숙고하게 되었다.
그는 특별히 개인주의가 만연되어 있어서 교회 공동체적, 사회적, 문화적 차원을 보지 못하게 만든 서구문화 속에서 복음의 해석자로서의 교회가 복음을 바르게 믿고 그 복음대로 살아가기 위한 선교적 도전들을 제시하였다. 특히 교회를 살아 있는 복음의 해석자로 명명하고 교회는 철저하게 복음을 공적인 진리로 선포함과 동시에 살아내기 위해 문화의 옷을 입지 않으면 안 됨을 강조했다. 복음의 진정한 공공성을 회복하기 위해 교회는 문화 변혁의 선구자적 역할을 감당해야 할 것을 강조하였다. 특히 타종교와 관계 속에서 어떻게 예수를 유일한 구원자로 증언할 수 있을까를 숙고하고 교회는 배타적인 자세를 지양하고 상호 배움과 포용적 태도를 통해 예수 그리스도가 공적 진리의 핵심임을 증언해야 한다고 보았다.
이런 입장에서 필자는 뉴비긴의 선교신학 안에 나타난 ‘복음의 상황화 문제’, ‘복음과 현대문화와의 관계’, ‘복음과 타종교와의 만남’, ‘구원자로서 예수 그리스도의 유일성’, 현대문화 속에서 교회의 선교적 과제를 차례로 살펴보았다. 뉴비긴이 각각의 소주제들을 통해 일관성 있게 주장하는 것은 복음은 사적이거나 축소될 수 없으며 공적 진리로서 모든 인류를 위한 하나님의 구속적 선교 메시지임을 주장한다. 그는 교회가 복음을 공공의 진리로 긍정하게 될 때 교회성장에 함몰되어 그저 자기성장만을 주도하는 것이 아니라 주관주의적, 상대주의적 벽을 허물고 하나님께서 이 세상을 구속하기 위해 보내신 예수 그리스도를 주로 인정하게 될 수 있다고 보았다. 더욱이 현대문화 속에서 복음이 공적 진리로 선포되어 복음의 공공성을 회복할 수 있다고 보았다. 그러므로 교회는 하나님께서 보내신 선교적 도구요 하나님 나라 선교 운동을 위해 파송 받은 종말론적 공동체로 존재해야 한다. 뉴비긴은 복음의 공적 진리를 증언하기 위한 교회의 선교적 과제를 언급하면서 교회는 복음의 증언을 위해 존재하며 스스로 권좌에 앉아 권력을 휘두르는 잘못을 범해서는 안 되고, 반면 교회는 겸손하게 하나님께서 세상 가운데 선교적 도구로 파송한 그의 선교적 도구임을 인식하고 세상에서 구원자로서 그리스도의 유일성을 증언하기 위해, 그리고 복음의 삶을 살아내기 위해 복음의 증인이 되어야 함을 우리에게 가르친다.

영어초록

This paper covers about study of “Church’s responsibility in the recovery of publicity of the gospel in today’s modern culture; this study was centered on Lesslie Newbigin’s missiology. When Newbigin came back to England after 35 years of his mission in India, he found western churches being afraid of teaching and spreading the gospel. When he discovered the churches losing their reputation as Christendom and other religions being far more passionate in their mission in the society, he began to study the Church’s responsibility and mission in the modern culture.
As a scholar and analyzer of mission, he suggested challenges to the Western churches which had strong individualist culture, and therefore, had very difficult time realizing communal, social, and cultural dimensions of their problems. By doing this, he wanted the churches to really believe the gospel and live out the gospel. He specially emphasized the Church’s involvement in the culture movement in order for the Church to stand as the active missionaries and to proclaim the gospel. Furthermore, he insisted that the Church should take the role of precursor in Cultural movements in order for the Church to recover its publicity. Moreover, he pointed out that in relationships with other religions, the Church should ponder how they can proclaim Jesus Christ as the only savior, avoid exclusive behaviors towards other religions, and prove that Jesus Christ is the absolute truth through educational and inclusive attitude.
The author of this paper explored several subtopics in Newbigin’s theology; these topics include (in chronological order): “problems in contextualization of mission”, “harmony of the gospel and modern culture”, “relation of the gospel and other religions”, “uniqueness of Jesus Christ as the savior”, and responsibility and duty of the Church in today’s modern culture. Through these subtopics, Newbigin establishes his point that the gospel can’t be personalized or minimized and is the absolute missional message from God for all humankind. According to Newbigin, when the Church admits that the gospel is for the all, not simply for the church itself, and switch its focus from personal and individual growth to more comprehensive growth of community, the society will eventually begin to see and believe that Jesus Christ as the one and only savior. What’s more, he also asserted that through this, the church will eventually recover the publicity of the gospel.
Therefore, Church should be God’s tool of mission and community for the glory of God’s Kingdom. By mentioning the Church’s responsibility of proclaiming the gospel, Newbigin discusses about how the Church should exist for the proclamation of the gospel and should not misuse its authority. Furthermore, the Church should first know and humbly accept that they are God’s tool for His mission and the glory of His Kingdom and live out the gospel so that they can proclaim Jesus Christ as their savior.
