‘여성 신성’의 배제와 남성 주체의 불안 - <오뉘힘내기> 이야기를 중심으로 - (The Study on Image of ‘the Elimination of the Sacred Female’ as Projection of the Anxiety Neurosis of the Male-Subject - on the Oral Narrative of Brother Having a Trial of Strength with his Sister-)

초록

이 글은 젠더정체성의 내용을 지시하는 구전서사의 연행이 연행과 전승에 참여한 이들을 ‘남성’과 ‘여성’으로 호명(interpellation)함으로써 젠더화된 주체를 생산하는 과정을 분석하기 위해 기획되었다. 본 논문에서 다루고자 하는 <오뉘힘내기>는 신성하고 초월적인 여성의 존재속성이 비극적 파국을 초래하는 결함으로 작용하고 이 비극적 파국으로 인해 남성이 치명적 결핍과 한계를 안게 된다는 정체성의 시나리오를 구현한다. 본 논문은 이 시나리오의 이면에서 여성의 존재속성을 ‘불길한’ 것으로 맥락화하고 이를 통해 남성의 불안과 우울을 은폐하거나 방어하는 기제를 분석함으로써 젠더화 전략의 골간을 파헤쳐 보고자 한다.
<오뉘힘내기>는 쌍둥이 장수로 태어난 오누이 가운데 누이가 실제로 더 뛰어난 능력을 갖고 있었으나 바로 그 때문에 죽음을 맞이하고, 이 죽음으로 인해 남동생이 치명적 결함을 안은 채 성장하여 결국 비극적 좌절과 죽음을 맞이하는 내용의 이야기다. 근친이 공모한 간접 살해의 희생양이라는 점에서, 또한 자신과는 상관없는 남성적 권력 의지와 욕망을 대리하기 위해 자신의 딸을 배반한다는 점에서 누이와 어머니도 모두 비극의 주인공이라 할 만하다. 그러나 서사적으로 강조되는 것은 남동생의 좌절과 죽음이며 누이의 죽음은 이 비극적 파토스의 원인을 설명하는 사건으로서 의미를 드러낼 뿐이다.
누이는 죽음을 통해 남동생의 내부에 영원한 구멍으로 남는다. ‘여성 신성’의 배제와 축출을 통해 완전한 주체가 되려 했던 ‘남성’은 이 배제와 축출을 환기하는 ‘누이의 죽음’을 통해 결코 극복할 수 없는 한계와 결핍을 안게 된다. 또한 ‘누이의 죽음’은 ‘남성’ 주체가 주체화 과정에서 무엇을 상실했고 또 그 상실로 인해 어떻게 우울증적 주체로 거듭나게 되었는지 환기하는 사건이기도 하다. 결국 <오뉘힘내기>에서 ‘여성 신성의 배제’를 표상하는 ‘누이의 죽음’은 주체화 과정에서 필연적으로 무의식적 상실을 경험하는 남성 주체의 불안과 결핍이 투사된 대상이자 그의 상실과 우울을 심리적으로 방어하는 사건이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Once upon a time a sister and a brother were very strong and mighty heroes. In fact the sister was stronger and wiser than her brother. As they were still children, he has often shown off his strength to others and his sister has been concerned about his vanity. One day she dressed up like a man and took part in Korean wrestling arena for her brother. The brother competed with his sister for the best prize without even knowing her identity and went down to his sister. After coming back home he still was filled with anger that he had been defeated, so his sister told him the truth.
Then the angry brother proposed her to have a trial of strength. In accordance with a proposal, he has built a castle and she has built a pagoda. When she was about to win a bet, her mother made her daughter to eat very hot soup for her son. At last she got the worst of it, she had to die because they promised that a loser ended it all. Time after time he broke out in revolt and was defeated for he has been a person to have a fatal lack because of his sister’s death.
This study is an analysis and criticism on the story of <Brother Having a Trial of Strength with his Sister(“Onuyhimnaegi”(오뉘힘내기)>. The story is called as ‘tragic oral-narrative’ which is defined the narrative transmitted by oral- performance possessing a tragic plot and a tragic theme, and creating tragic effects in this article. The objects of this research are the oral-narrative in which ‘hamartia(tragic flaw)’ is composed of the attributes of ‘the female’, the will or the act of ‘the male’ is collapsed and defeated heinously.
The gender-border of the male which is made by objectifying the female exclusively, depends on the gender-border of the female logically, since its category cannot be constructed without establishing the boundary of ‘female’. Most of all the factors deviating from normalization are necessarily to be incorporated into the boundary as essential components again. Thus it is very important that all these objects abjected are represented as the female image.
The male is nothing but a melancholic subject with the loss to be unable to be mourned for, supposing that the initiation effect of tragic oral-narratives is to suppress and deny things except what the social order and rules permit, through internalizing a mechanism of normalization. The male's lack is melancholy itself from the aspect of showing the nervous and the anxiety because he cannot be conscious of what he has lost and he himself unconsciously denies the fact itself that he lost something.
