초록

본 연구에서는 이청준의 「뺑소니 사고」, 전상국의 「우상의 눈물」, 현길언의 「사제와 제물」에서 공통으로 등장하는 우상의 정체성과 형성과정 그리고 그 우상들에 담긴 사회적 함의를 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 텍스트에서 등장하는 영웅이나 지도자들은 대중들의 우상으로 불릴 만한 인격과 자질을 갖춘 인물들은 아니다. 오히려 「뺑소니 사고」의 “일파 선생”, 「우상의 눈물」의 “기표와 형우”, 「사제와 제물」의 “선우백” 등은 지극히 일상적이고 평범한 삶을 소망하는 사람들일 수 있다. 하지만 처한 상황과 여건은 그들을 자극하고 충동하여, 그들을 또 다른 모습으로 변모하게 하거나 새로운 사실을 인지하게 한다. 즉, 그들의 태도와 행위에 대한 선악의 결과와 상관없이 타자의 주도하에 그들은 대중의 우상으로 자리잡게 된다.
「뺑소니 사고」에서 일파선생 서거 후, 그가 마지막 남긴 ‘부정한 빵’의 언사를 두고 ‘역사의 오욕(汚辱)담당’과 ‘양심으로의 고백’ 등으로 상반되게 해석된다. 후자의 주장을 펼치던 배영섭 기자가 뺑소니사고로 죽게 되면서 일파선생에 대한 진실공방은 은폐되고 그의 우상화 작업은 추종자들의 의도대로 본격화된다.
「우상의 눈물」에서 기표와 형우는 반 아이들에게 우상이다. 기표는 어려운 가정형편에 정당하지 못한 방법으로 살아가는 불량학생이지만 학생들 사이에 그는 ‘악마’와 ‘우상’의 상반된 모습으로 인식된다. 반면, 그와 대립하는 형우와 담임은 의리와 진실, 호의를 내세운 위선의 얼굴로 그려지고 있다. 형우와 담임의 각색으로 만들어진 기표에 대한 우상화는 당사자인 기표 자신이 오히려 당황하게 되고 무서운 공포감마저 느끼게 된다. 이 작품은 보이는 폭력을 해소하려는 방편으로 또 다른 숨겨진 폭력이 작용하는 세상의 어두운 단면을 나타낸다.
「사제와 제물」의 선우백은 지난날 겪었던 죽음과 관련한 독특한 체험을 통해 진정한 사제의 길이 무엇인가를 자각했던 인물이다. 그러나 자신의 의지와 달리 주변에서 자신을 사제로만 예우하면서 자신도 모르게 이기적인 사제로 전락하였다. 노동자의 입장에 서서 회사와의 투쟁을 독려하는 농성장에서도 노동자들의 희생으로 목적을 이루고 해결되기를 바란다. 이것은 무조건 회사 측 의도대로 노동자들이 순순히 따르기를 원하는 것과 다르지 않다. ‘사제라면 그들을 위해 희생을 할 수 있어야 한다’는 강철규의 말에 그는 그동안 자신의 잘못된 사고에서 벗어나 노동자들을 위해 희생의 제물이 될 것을 결심한다. 자아 각성을 통한 진정한 사제의 길로 나아가는 과정을 보여준다.
이들 작품은 우상의 존재와 위력이 대중의 삶에 미치는 영향과 사회적 함의에 대해 다각적으로 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

This study has examined the identities and the processes of the formation of idols, leaders in other words, who appear in “Hit-and-Run Accident” by Lee Cheong-jun, “Tears of Idol” by Cheon Sang-guk , and “The Priest and the Sacrifice” by Hyeon Kil-eon, and the social implications contained therein. The heroes and the leader who appear in the texts of this study definitely do not possess personalities and qualifications that are worthy of being called idols by the public. ‘Ilpa Seonsaeng’ of “Hit-and-Run Accident”, ‘Kipyo and Hyungwoo’ of “Tears of Idol”, and ‘Seon Woo-baek’ of “The Priest and the Sacrifice” can be completely normal people who desire a normal life, if anything. However, the circumstances and surroundings transform them into different figures or realize new facts by exciting and instigating their emotions. In other words, they become public idols under the lead of other people, regardless of the virtue and vice of their actions.
In “Hit-and-Run Accident”, the ‘Dishonest Bread’ left by Ilpa Seonsaeng upon his death is conflictingly interpreted as ‘representation of historical disgrace’ and ‘conscientious confession’. As reporter Youngseop Bae, who insisted the latter, gets killed by a hit-and-run accident, the truths behind Ilpa Seonsaeng are concealed and the idolization of Ilpa Seonsaeng gets kicked into high gear as intended by his followers.
Kipyo and Hyungwoo are the idols of their classmates in “Tears of Idol”. Kipyo is a student who goes about his daile life by unjustifiable means because of difficult family situations, but he is taken ambivalently as the devil and charm. On the other hand, Hyungwoo and the homeroom teacher who confront Kipyo are depicted as hypocrite faces that display loyalty, truth, and goodwill. Idolization of Kipyo accomplished through dramatization of these two characters, Hyungwoo and the homeroom teacher, throws Kipyo, the person directly concerned, into confusion and even makes him feel fear. This novel shows the dark side of this world in which other hidden violence works as a mean to resolve violence that is visible.
Seon Woobaek of “The Priest and the Sacrifice”is a person who realized what the true path of a priest is through a unique experience related to death that he had in the past. However, he has ended up as a selfish priest without realizing himself as the people around him treated him as just a priest against his will. Wishing to accomplish something through the sacrifices of laborers in a position where he encourages the laborers to fight against the company as he stands on the side of the laborers in the striking site. This is no different from wanting the laborers to acquiesce to the company’s intent without giving a fight. He admits his wrongdoings of the past and comes to a resolution to become the sacrifice himself after hearing a statement of Kang Cheolkyu, “You should be able to sacrifice yourself for them if you are a priest.” This is an appearance of a true hero who has sublimated through self-awakening.
These novels show the influences of the existence and the power of idols on the lives of the public and their social implications from different perspectives.
