‘젠더번역’ 관점에서의 최윤 소설-최윤, ｢회색 눈사람｣을 중심으로 (Choe Yun’s Novel from the Perspective of ‘Gender-Translation’-An Analysis of Choe Yun’s Grey Snowman)

초록

‘문화혁명회’라는 반정부 지하운동 단체의 활동을 돕게 된 여대생 강하원이 점차 조직으로부터 거리를 느끼는 과정을 담아낸 최윤의 ｢회색 눈사람｣은 또 다른 여성 인물 김희진이 종내 아사한 시체로 발견되고 마는 것을 더해, 운동과 이념으로부터 ‘소외’당한 이들의 좌절과 고통을 섬세한 문체로 그려낸 소설이자, ‘애도’ 되어야 할 상처 입은 여성들을 앞서 가리키는 작품으로 평가된다. 혁명회의 거점으로서 자리하는 인쇄소의 주인 ‘안’, 그리고 단속이 격해지자 이십여 일간 그녀의 자취방으로 도피해 온 ‘희진’과의 관계 속에서 하원은, 나아가 ｢회색 눈사람｣은 해석되어 왔다고 볼 수 있다.
초점을 달리하여 본고에서는 이십 년 전의 자신을 반추하고 있는 화자 강하원의 행적에 새삼 주목해 ｢회색 눈사람｣을 다시 읽는다. 이때 ‘이탈리아 사학가의 독일어본 역사책’ 번역에 매달리나, 매번 반 면을 못 넘기고 지쳐 떨어지는 행동을 반복하는 그녀의 모습이 확인된다. 요컨대 하원이 계속해서 번역을 ‘하는’, 달리 보자면 번역을 끝맺지 못하고 실패에 가깝게 반복하는 상황은 ‘원문의 번역 가능성 여부’를 의심하고 부정하는 실천 행위로서 ‘번역 불가능의 정치학’을 담지하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 즉 젠더번역(gender-translation)의 관점에서 바라보았을 때, 작중 운동 조직 내 사회주의 사상의 핵심을 담은 것으로 묘사되는 저서의 ‘원본성’−‘안’의 인쇄소에서 양산하고자 하는 그것−의 무력함을 지시하는 하원의 모습은 포착된다. 자신의 소설을 역사를 향한 ‘전언(傳言)’으로 상정하는 작가 최윤의 의식과도 맞닿아 있는 이와 같은 관점은, 어째서 현재의 강하원이 다름 아닌 ‘안도감’을 느끼고 있음을 역설하는지 그 해답을 건넨다.

영어초록

Grey Snowman written by Choi Yoon, depicts the process of Kang Ha-won, a female college student who starts to help the activities of an underground anti-government movement group called the Cultural Revolution Association, and gradually feels distanced from the organization. In addition to the fact that another female character, Kim Hee-jin, is eventually found as a starving corpse, this is a novel that describes the frustration and pain of those who have been ‘alienated’ from movements and ideologies in a delicate style and also evaluated as a novel that previously indicates the wounded women who should be ‘mourned’. In her relationship with ‘Ahn’, the owner of the printing factory that serves as the base of the Revolutionary Association, and ‘Hee-jin’, who escaped to her room for twenty days due to the intensified crackdown, it can be said Ha-won, and also Gray Snowman have been interpreted.
With a different focus, this paper re-reads Gray Snowman, paying renewed attention to the trail of the narrator, Kang Ha-won, who is reflecting on herself in twenty years ago. At this time, we can see that she keeps concentrating on translation of ‘German history book by an Italian historian’, however, she repeats a failure to get through half a page and gets exhausted every time. In short, the situation in which Ha-won continues to try to translate, or in other words, keeps almost being failed to complete the translation, it is a practical act of doubting and denying the ‘possibility of translating the original text’ and embodies the ‘politics of untranslatability’. That is, from the perspetive of gender- translation, it is captured Ha-won’s appearance that indicates the powerlessness of the ‘originality’ of the book, which is described as containing the core of socialist ideology within the movement organization – what ‘Ahn’ is trying to mass-produce in his printing factory. This kind of perspective is also in line with the consciousness of writer Choi Yoon, who regards her novel as a ‘message’ toward history. It also provides an answer to the question why Kang Ha-won in the present emphasizes that she is feeling none other than ‘relief.’
