민속학의 눈으로 본 전통적 미풍양속의 가치 재인식 (A New Understanding about Value of Traditional Beautiful and Fine Customs in the Viewpoint of Folklore)

초록

미풍양속은 문화의 가치를 바람직하게 규정하는 전통사회의 용어이다. 지금도 같은 가치를 지니며 유효하리고 여기는 것은 잘못이다. 바람직한 현대문화도 미래에는 비판적으로 극복될 수 있다는 열린 시각이 필요하다. 민속학의 시각에서는 위로부터 주어진 규범적 미풍양속이 아니라 아래에서부터 변화를 요구하는 변혁적 미풍양속의 재인식이 긴요하다. 그러므로 민속문화의 구체적 현상 속에 갈무리되어 있는 자료를 중심으로 미풍양속의 가치를 살펴본다.
설화는 효와 같은 유교윤리를 미풍양속으로 규범화하는 데 동의하지 않고 효행에 대한 전제와 가치, 방법에 대해서 끊임없이 성찰하도록 만든다. 따라서 ‘효불효’ 설화를 비롯하여, ‘열불열(烈不烈)’ 설화, 그리고 충효의 충돌 문제를 다루는 설화들이 있어서 미풍양속으로 알려진 유교윤리들의 고정관념에 매몰되지 않도록 한다. 민요에서는 기존의 미풍양속에 대한 구체적인 비판과정을 거치지 않고 추구해야 할 민중적 가치를 바로 노래한다. 따라서 기존 윤리에 대한 비판 없이 바로 사랑노래를 거침없이 부른다. ‘삼종지도’의 인습을 과감하게 벗어던지고 ‘현모양처’의 종속적 미풍양속에 매몰되지 않는 여성상이 민요를 통해 추구된다. 우리시대의 미풍양속은 인간해방의 문화이자 바람직한 인간상을 실현하는 문화로 설정되고 있다.
미풍양속이 관념론에 빠지지 않으려면 생산활동과 생태계 문제에도 관심을 기울어야 한다. 현대사회의 일자리 부족과 관련하여 두레의 기능을 창조적으로 계승할 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 두레는 일터와 일자리, 노동력만 공유하는 것이 아니라 휴식과 놀이, 음식과 향연, 신앙생활까지 대등하게 공유하기 때문이다. 재산의 사적 소유를 인정하면서도 기본적인 일을 공동으로 함으로써, 일꾼들은 일자리를, 지주들은 노동력을 공유하는 체계를 갖추고 있다. 그러므로 두레의 전통은 현실적인 기업문화로 계승할 만한 문화라 할 수 있다.
우리시대에는 생태학적으로 지속 가능한 문화를 가꾸어가는 것이 절실한 과제이다. 민속문화에서 자연생명과 공생하는 유기체적 인식은 생태학적 자연관과 만난다. 오물과 찌꺼기를 밥으로 이용하는 재활용 중심의 선순환 체계가 살림의 문화이자 우리시대의 미풍양속이다. 풍수지리설도 공생문화를 만들어갈 뿐 아니라, 적덕의 선행과 정신적 깨달음으로 인간적인 삶을 성숙하게 하는 문화로 재인식할 수 있다.
문화의 기능은 한정되어 있지 않다. 쓰임새에 따라 다른 기능을 발휘한다. 따라서 무엇이 미풍양속인가 하는 논의보다 어떻게 해야 미풍양속을 만들어 갈 것인가 하는 것이 더 생산적인 논의가 될 수 있다. 그러므로 민속문화에 대한 성찰적 인식이 긴요하며 새로운 소통매체에 따른 문화적 담론 창출의 전망도 주목할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

The beautiful and fine customs are a term of traditional society prescribing value of culture desirably. It is wrong that now it has the same value as the past and is regarded to be effective. It is necessary to have an opened sight that a desirable modern culture may be overcome critically in the future. In the viewpoint of folklore, it is necessary to have a new understanding of innovative beautiful and fine customs requesting changes from the bottom, not normative beautiful and fine customs given from the top. Therefore, the study examined value of the beautiful and fine customs on the basis of data in concrete phenomena of folk culture.
Fairy-tale doesn’t agree to prescribing Confucian ethics like filial duty as the beautiful and fine customs and makes us continue to reflect on assumption, value and method of filial duty. Therefore, fairy-tales make us not absorbed in the stereotype of Confucian ethics well-known as the beautiful and fine customs since there are fairy-tales of ‘Hyo Bul Hyo’ and ‘Yeol Bul Yeol’ and fairy-tales treating conflicts between filial duty and loyalty. Folk songs sing democratic value to have to be pursued without concrete criticism on the existing beautiful and fine customs. Therefore, they have songs of love without reserve, not criticizing the existing ethics. An image of a woman throwing away old custom of ‘the three dependencies’ boldly and not absorbed in dependent beautiful and fine customs of ‘good wife and wise mother’ is pursued by folk songs. The beautiful and fine customs in the present times are set up as culture of human liberation and culture to realize a desirable image of humans.
The beautiful and fine customs should pay attention to production activities and problems of ecosystem not to be absorbed in idealism. It is necessary to succeed to functions of Dure (Korean farmers’ cooperative group) creatively with regard to lack of jobs in modern society. For, Dure shares rest & play, food & amusement and religious life as well as workplace, job and labor. It has a system that workers share jobs and landowners share labor by recognizing the private ownership of property and doing basic works jointly. Therefore, the tradition of Dure is culture worth succeeding as realistic enterprise culture.
It is urgent to make sustainable culture ecologically in the present times. Organic recognition having a symbiotic relationship with natural life meets with a view on ecological nature in folk culture. Recycling based virtuous circle system using rubbish and sediments as boiled rice is housekeeping culture and the beautiful and fine customs in the present times. Theory of divination based on topography can make symbiotic culture and have a new understanding as culture making human life matured with Jeokdeok’s good deed and mental enlightenment.
The function of culture is not limited. It displays different functions according to use. Therefore, it is more productive to discussion on how we will make the beautiful and fine customs than what the beautiful and fine customs are. Therefore, it is urgent to have an introspective recognition about folk culture. And it is also necessary to pay attention to creating cultural discussion followed by new media of communication.
