초록

『눈물과 정치』는 한국영화에 나타난 신파성을 오랫동안 연구해온 이호걸의 역저이다. 이 책은 ‘신파성’ 혹은 ‘신파 양식’이라는 술어로 대중문화 텍스트에 나타난 관습과 세계관을 분석해온 연구의 연장선상에서 ‘신파’ 개념을 ‘한국 근대를 관통해온 가족적 눈물의 흐름’으로까지 확장한다. 이를 바탕으로 “한국인에게 정치란 어떤 ‘느낌’이었는지를 밝히는 일”에 매진함으로써 최근 새로운 비평 주제이자 사회인문학적 방법론으로 부상한 감정 연구와 궤를 함께 한다.
이 책은 문화 텍스트를 경유하여 눈물의 흐름을 통해 감정과 정치의 관계를 구명하려고 했다는 점에서 새롭다. 최근 부상한 감정 연구의 맥락에서 ‘감정의 정치’는 낯설지 않은 논제일 수 있으나 ‘눈물’을 이처럼 집요하게 추적한 연구는 없었다. 또한 광범위한 텍스트를 넘나들며 관계 짓고 배치하고 있다는 점에서 과감하다. 문학과 정치 내지 문화와 정치, 또는 감정과 정치의 관계에 대해서는 상당한 논의가 이루어져왔고 현재진행중이기도 하다. 그런데 이 책처럼 폭넓게 텍스트를 취한 경우는 없었다. 이 책에서 텍스트를 다루는 방식을 보면 근대예술의 위계를 무화시킨다. 뿐만 아니라 소설에서 수기를 포함하는 대중서사물부터 시와 대중가요는 물론이고 역사서와 철학서에 이르기까지 경계 없이 다양하고 포괄적이다. 그래서 이 책은 ‘신파성’이라고 명명하고 있는 근대 한국의 독특한 감성을 고찰하는 대중예술 연구에서부터 감정구조와 사회 변화 간의 관계에 대한 사회인문학적 연구, 그리고 텍스트와 맥락을 포괄하는 문화정치 연구에 이르기까지 다양한 맥락 사이에 자리 잡게 된다. 종합해 보건대 이 책은 문화 텍스트를 경유 내지 관통하여 감정과 정치의 관계에 천착함으로써 문화, 감성, 정치를 재맥락화하고 있다는 데에 연구사적 의의가 있다.

영어초록

Nunmulkwa Jeongchi(Tears and Politics) is a strenuous work of Lee Hogeol that has long conducted research on the nature of "Sinpa" of South Korean movies. This book expands the concept of "Sinpa" even to the "flow of family tears penetrating the modern times of South Korea" as an extension of his research in which he has analyzed the customs and world views in popular culture texts with such predicates as "the nature of Sinpa" or "the style of Sinpa." By devoting himself to "investigation into 'how politics feels to Korean people'" based on these, he has conducted research in the same orbit as emotional affect study that has emerged as a new topic of criticism and methodology of social humanities in recent years.
This book consists of two parts: Part I offers theoretical explanations about the basic concepts used in it under the title of "Flows of Tears and Modern South Korea" and gives an overview of a Tear’s narrative origin and system as part of the mainstream in South Korean popular culture in the 20th century. Under the title of "Politics of Tears," Part II shows the patterns of ‘tears of Sinpa’ combining with politics, the type from colonized Joseon to the era of neo-liberalism. This paper tries to find the book's significance in research history while reading it by respecting its organization.
This book is refreshing in that it tries to investigate the relationship between emotions and politics based on the flow of tears via cultural texts. "Politics of emotions" can be a familiar topic for discussion in the context of emotional affect study that has recently emerged, but there has been no research that traces "tears" as tenaciously as this book. In addition, this book is bold in that it forms relations and arranges them, crossing between extensive texts. There have been considerable discussions about relations between literature and politics, between culture and politics, and between emotions and politics, but none of them have been covered as extensive texts as this book has. The way that this book handles a text breaks down the hierarchy of modern art. Furthermore, it is diverse and comprehensive with no boundaries among popular narratives including novels and memoirs, poems, popular songs, and history and philosophy books. This is why this book is situated among various contexts including research on popular art, which investigates the unique sensitivity of modern South Korea called "nature of Sinpa," research on relations between the emotional structure and social changes in the aspect of social humanities, and research on culture and politics to encompass texts and context.
In short, this book claims its significance in the research history by delving into relations between emotions and politics via or through cultural texts and thus contextualizing culture, sensitivity and politics anew.
