질주하는 과학기술시대 인문학이 필요한 이유 - “우리는 어디서 왔고, 누구며, 어디로 가는가” (Why the Humanities Are Required in the Era of Transformative Science and Technology - “Where Do We Come From, What Are We, Where Are We Going”)

초록

오늘날 인류 문명의 딜레마는 근대 과학을 폐기 처분하고 근대 이전의 세계로되돌아갈 수 없다는 사실이다. 질주하는 과학기술이라는 호랑이 등에서 내리지 못하고 계속 타고 달릴 수밖에 없다는 것이 21세기 인류의 운명이다. 그렇다면 인류는이 비극적인 운명 앞에서 무엇을 해야 하는가? 결국 “우리는 어디서 왔고, 누구며,어디로 가는가”라는 근원적인 문제의식으로 되돌아가서 과학이 삶을 지배하는 것이아니라 삶을 위한 과학이 될 수 있도록 근대적인 삶의 방식을 바꾸기 위한 근본적인반성을 해야 한다.
“우리는 어디서 왔고, 누구며, 어디로 가는가”의 질문은 인간의 존재 이유와 목적을 깨닫기 위한 화두다. 최근 한국사회에서 불고 있는 인문학 열풍은 일차적으로는이 화두의 중요성에 대한 재인식으로부터 발생했다. 오늘날 문명의 바벨탑의 붕괴를 막을 뿐 아니라 참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움에서 벗어나기 위해서는 인문학의부활이 일어나야 한다는 데 많은 사람이 공감한다. 하지만 과연 오늘의 인문학자들이 과학기술의 진보가 만들어 놓은 판도라 상자가 담고 있는 재앙을 예언하고 인류를 구원할 프로메테우스가 될 수 있는가?융합의 시대정신은 프로메테우스가 되려는 인문학자들에게 양날의 칼이 될 수있다. 인문학자들이 융합의 도전에 대한 응전을 어떻게 하느냐에 따라 융합은 위기에 빠진 인문학의 목을 베는 ‘망나니 칼’이 되거나 인문학 위기를 해결하는 ‘수술용칼’이 될 수 있다.
한국에서 융합 담론은 인문학의 경제적 가치를 증대시키는 ‘실용화’와 인문정신을회복하기 위한 ‘근본화’라는 이중의 목표를 달성할 수 있는 시대정신으로 말해진다. 그런데 융합을 통해 어떻게 이 같은 서로 모순적인 이중목표가 달성될 수 있는가? 서로 다른 것을 합하여 새로운 것을 만들어내는 것이 융합이라면, ‘실용화’와 ‘근본화’라는 모순의 변증법을 성취하는 융합이 어떻게 가능할 수 있는가? 그것은 융합연구가 실용성 증대를 위해 밖으로 뻗어나가는 원심력과 근본으로의 회귀를 위해핵심으로 돌입하는 구심력 사이의 균형으로 성취될 수 있다. 이 같은 균형을 잡는추의 역할을 하는 것이 바로 인문학이다. 요컨대 ‘실용화’와 ‘근본화’라는 융합의두 마리 토끼를 잡기 위해서는 ‘인문학의 융합화’와 ‘융합의 인문화’의 변증법이 필요하다.
실용성은 복잡성의 증대로 발휘되지만, 원형은 단순화를 추구한다. 융합연구를통해 복잡성과 다양성은 커지며, 그것들의 증대로 학문 생태계는 진화한다. 하지만중세의 월리엄 오캄과 우리시대 스티브 잡스의 말대로 진리는 단순함이기 때문에카오스 속의 질서를 잡아주는 중심이 있어야 한다. 그 중심을 잡아주는 학문이 바로인문학이다. 인문학은 융합으로 나아가는 항해의 진로를 잡아주고 나침판 역할을해야 한다.
모든 학문연구와 인간사의 이야기는 원형의 주제와 변주로 변형된다. 우리시대그 원형에 대한 열망과 추구로부터 인문학 르네상스가 일어났다. 하지만 한국사회에서 인문학 르네상스를 누가 주도하는가? 결코 인문학자들이라고 말할 수 없다.
세월호 참사는 앞만 보고 달려온 한국인들에게 주어진 ‘판도라상자’다. 한국의인문학자들은 이 대참사를 한국사회를 성찰적 근대화로 전환시킬 수 있는 울리히벡이 말하는 ‘해방적 재앙’으로 해석할 의무가 있다. 이 의무를 완수할 때 한국의인문학자들은 프로메테우스로 거듭날 수 있다.

영어초록

The dilemma of human civilization today is that we cannot discard modern science and go back to the world before modern times. The fate of humans in the 21st century is that wecannot get off the back of a tiger, i.e. science and technology, and have to continue to run.
Then, what should humans do before such tragic fate? That should be, after all, to go backto becoming aware of the fundamental problems where do we come from, what are we,where are we going and reflecting on the way of modern life to make science help life, notcontrol it.
The questions of where do we come from, what are we, where are we going serve as atopic to realize the reason for human existence and the purpose. The recent fever of thehumanities in Korean society primarily stemmed from re-realization of the importance ofthis topic. Today, many agree that in order to prevent the Tower of Babel for civilizationfrom collapsing and to be free from the unbearable lightness of being, there should berevitalization of the humanities. However, it is doubtful if humanists today can becomePrometheus who predicts the disaster the Pandora’s box made by the development ofscience and technology will bring about and redeems mankind.
The spirit of the age for convergence could come as a double-edged sword for humanistswho will become Prometheus. Convergence might serve as an executional sword that cutsoff the germ of the humanities or as a sword for a surgery that cures the crisis of thehumanities depending on how humanists respond to the challenge of convergence.
Convergence discussions in Korea are represented as the spirit of the times which can achieve the two goals of commercialization that increases economic value of the humanitiesand fundamentalization to restore the humanistic spirit. But how can convergence attain thetwo contradictory goals? If convergence is to create something new by combining differentthings, how can it be possible to make convergence that seeks the dialectic of contradiction,that is, commercialization and fundamentalization. That can be accomplished through abalance between centrifugal force that stretches out for the expansion of commercializationand centripetal force which gets into the core to return to the root. The humanities functionas a weight that keeps the balance. In a nut shell, to kill the two birds of commercializationand fundamentalization with one stone, the dialectic of convergence for the humanities andhumanities for convergence.
While practicality is made possible due to the expansion of complexity, its original formpursues simplification. Convergence researches expand complexity and diversity, throughwhich the academic ecosystem evolves. As William of Ockham in the Middle Ages andtoday’s Steve Jobs said, the truth is simplicity and thus there should be a center that keepsorder in the midst of chaos. The humanities play the role in keeping the order. Thehumanities should steer the course of a voyage toward convergence and work as a compass.
All the stories between academic studies and the affairs of humans are transformed intothe original subject and variation. Renaissance of the humanities was sparked by the desirefor and pursuit of the original subject. In Korean society, however, who leads theRenaissance of the humanities? Humanists should never be the ones. “The Sewol ferry disaster” is a Pandora’s box given to the Koreans who have so farrushed forward. Korean humanists have a mission to interpret the disaster as emancipatory catastrophe asserted by Ulrich Beck, which can shift Korean society to introspective modernization. Once the mission is completed, they can turn into Prometheus.
