초록

본 논문은 스페인 시인 루이스 세르누다에 끼친 T. S. 엘리엇의 영향을 고찰하였다. 세르누다는 스페인의 시적 전통과 초현실주의나 순수시처럼 당시 유럽에 등장한 새로운 문예사조들을 자신의 작품에 잘 용해시켰다. 세르누다에 대한 엘리엇의 영향은 특히 1940년대에 본격화되었으며 그의 후기 시의 형성에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 엘리엇은 그의 시 작품으로 뿐만 아니라 시에 대한 평론과 새로운 문학적 주장들로 유명하다. 본 논문에서는 세르누다에 대한 엘리엇의 영향을 크게 두 가지 양상에서 조명하였다. 첫 번째는 세르누다의 시적 사상과 비평에 대한 관점과 태도에 미친 엘리엇의 영향이며 두 번째는 구체적인 시 작품의 제작에 끼친 엘리엇의 영향으로, 이 두 가지는 이론과 실천처럼 상호보완적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 엘리엇의 시에 대한 주장 중 “예술에 있어서 몰개성론”과 “객관적 상관물”, 그리고 “극적 독백”이 세르누다의 시 사상에게 큰 영향을 준다. 세르누다가 엘리엇에게 영향을 받았다는 것은 엘리엇을 알기 전과 후에 세르누다의 시 사상과 창작에 변화가 있었다는 것을 의미하기 때문에 본 논문에서는 그의 초기 시 세계와 후기 시 세계 사이에 존재하는 차이점을 비교하고 설명하는데 관심을 기울였다. 세르누다의 전기 시에서 초현실주의의 자동기술법은 이성이나 가치관에 종속되지 않고 마음속에 떠오르는 생각이나 감정을 자유롭게 표현할 수 있도록 했지만 지나치게 주관적 감정에 빠지기도 했는데 엘리엇의 시 사상은 그에게 이러한 과도한 주관적 표현에서 벗어날 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다. 엘리엇이 주장한 시 사상은 시인이 작품을 보다 객관적이고 다양한 관점에서 표현하는 길을 제시하였기 때문에 세르누다는 엘리엇의 사상을 수용하고 자기방식으로 적용하면서 더욱 성찰적이 되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 세르누다 후기 시 「라사로」와 「왕좌」에서 엘리엇이 주장한 “극적 독백” 이 어떤 역할을 하는지 확인해 보았다. 이러한 시도로 인해 세르누다는 프랑코 시기의 젊은 시인들에게 시에 대한 새로운 표현방법을 제시할 수 있었기에 젊은 세대는 세르누다를 통해 극적 독백과 엘리엇을 수용하게 된다. 그러한 결과로 세르누다는 영국문학과 스페인 문학, 그리고 전후 세대와 이전 세대를 이어주는 문학적 교두보의 역할을 하였다.

영어초록

The current study examines the influence of works by T. S. Eliot on the Spanish poet Luis Cernuda, who successfully combined poetic traditions of his native land and new literary movements such as the surrealism and pure poetry, which were beginning to emerge in Europe. Cernuda began utilizing elements of Eliot’s poetry in the 1940s, gradually incorporating it to formulate the styles of his poetry during the later years of his life. Eliot is renowned not only for his poetry itself, but also for critiques on others’ poetic verses and offering new literary insights. The current study highlights the effect Eliot had on Cernuda in two different aspects: The first is on how the American poet influenced his Spanish counterpart in developing perspectives and attitudes regarding ideas and critiques of poetry, and the other is on the influence in terms of producing poems. These two perspectives are complementary, as in the relationship between theory and practice; Eliot’s ideas about poetry such as the “impersonality in art,” “the objective correlative,” and “dramatic monologue” are especially critical in formulation of Cernuda’s poetic ideas. Because the fact that Cernuda was altered by Eliot is tied to the changes to the Spanish poet’s poetic ideas and creations before and after he encountered Eliot’s works, the current study focused on comparing and explicating the difference between Cernuda’s poetic world in his earlier days and later days. During the first half of his career, Cernuda subscribed to automatism, which enabled him to express ideas and emotions without being bound to reason and conventional values, but at the same time the technique pushed him excessively towards subjective emotionality. On the other hand, the poetic ideas of Eliot suggested a way to escape from such excess of subjective emotions. The American poet argued for employing more objective and diverse perspectives in creating works of poetry, Cernuda accepted and personalized to generate even more insight. Following this trend, the current study delves into the role of Eliot’s “dramatic monologue” in Cernuda’s “Lazaro” and “The King’s Chair.” Trough these attempts, Cernuda presented new methods of expression for young Spanish poets during the reign of Franco, and the young generation accepted dramatic monologue and Eliot through Cernuda. As a result, Cernuda served as a literary bridge between British and Spanish literature, and between pre-war and post-war generations.
