동성마을 여성노인들의 ‘마을학교’ 활동과 결사체적 공동체의 성격 －경북 예천군 농바우마을 마을학교 사례－ (Female Senior Citizens’ Village School Activities in Paternal Clan Village and the Characteristics of the Community as an Association －Focusing on the village school in Nongbau Village located in Yech)

초록

이 연구에서는 경북 예천군 농바우마을 마을학교 활동을 통해 공동체와 결사체의 성격을 구명하고자 하였다. 한편 이 연구는 필자의 선행연구인 옥천 안남어머니학교의 ‘공동체적 결사체’의 후속연구이다. 연구 결과, 농바우마을 마을학교는 ‘강한 공동체’의 속성과 ‘옅은 결사체’의 속성을 동시에 지닌 ‘결사체적 공동체’였다. 마을학교는 마을공동체라는 지리적 경계 내에 주도적 활동가에 의해 인위적으로 만들어진 것으로 가입과 탈퇴가 자발적이고 자유로우며 한글공부라는 공통의 목적과 목표를 지닌 결사체의 속성을 지니고 있다.
하지만 농바우마을은 안동 김씨 동성마을로 혈연공동체로 이루어져 있기 때문에 결사체를 조직하여도 의사결정, 갈등중재, 연대관계 등에서 강한 공동체적 속성을 지니고 있었다. 의사결정을 할 때는 민주적이고 평등한 방식으로 진행하지만 기본적으로 서열의식이 전제되어 있으므로 여기에는 전통 공동체의 운영 원리가 작동한다고 할 수 있겠다. 오히려 마을학교 참여자들로 인해 마을공동체의 갈등이 약화되는 경향이 있다. 또한 마을공동체의 ‘일상적 연대’가 마을학교 내에서도 이루어지고 있었다. 이에 동성마을 내에서 결사체가 조직되었을 때는 결사체의 속성은 옅게 지니는 반면에 공동체의 속성을 더 강하게 지닌다는 사실이 해명되었다. 아울러 농바우마을 마을학교 활동은 혈연공동체의 성차별과 서열의식을 낮추고 마을공동체 구성원의 결속력을 높이는 데 기여하였다. 무엇보다 농촌마을 여성노인들이 노년에 정체성을 확립하고 사회문제에 관한 의식도 높아져 마을의 문화운동을 주도하는 주체로서 역할을 하게 되었다. 이는 마을과 지역 사회의 변화에도 긍정적인 영향을 주었다.
이 연구에서는 현대 공동체문화에서 결사체가 강한 공동체성을 지니는 데에는 결사체의 의사결정, 갈등중재, 연대관계 등이 중요한 역할을 한다는 사실을 해명했다. 특히 결사체의 구성원이 혈연공동체일수록 결사체는 공동체적 성격을 강하게 지니고 있었다. 이처럼 결사체와 공동체의 성격에는 그 구성원의 속성뿐만 아니라 농촌사회의 구조와 문화적 배경도 영향을 미치고 있었다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine the characteristics of community and association through the activities of a village school in Nongbau Village located in Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is a follow-up study of this author’s prior research, “Okcheon Annam Mothers’ School as a Communal Association.” The key findings show that the village school in Nongbau Village is a strong community with a weak association. The village school, created by leading activists within the geographical boundary of the village community, is characterized as an association where the members can join or drop out freely for the communal purpose of Hangeul learning.
Nongbau Village is Andong Kim family’s Paternal Clan Village. As it is a blood-related community, even after forming an association, it holds characteristics of a strong community for decision-making, conflict mediation, or solidarity. When making decisions, the members adopt democratic and fair principles; however, as the hierarchy controls it, it operates based on the rules of traditional communities. Since it is a blood-related community, the conflicts in the village tend to weaken thanks to the participants of the village school. In addition, the ordinary solidarity of the village community is formed within the village school. The phenomenon explains that when an association is formed in Paternal Clan Village, it tends to have characteristics of a weak association and a strong community. In addition, the activities of the village school in Nongbau Village contribute to relieving gender discrimination and hierarchy while reinforcing solidarity among the members of the village community. Above all, female senior citizens in the rural village play key roles in the cultural movements in the village as they establish their identity in their advanced age and develop views on social issues. This also exerts positive effects on changes in the region and village society.
This study clarifies that decision-making, conflict arbitration, and solidarity play crucial roles in creating an association with characteristics of a strong community in contemporary communities. In particular, when the members of an association are blood-related, it tends to have aspects of a strong community. To sum up, the characteristics of an association and a rural community are influenced by its members and the community structure and cultural background as well.
