식민말기 피식민 교양주의의 한 세계상과 ‘재조(在朝)’잔영: 이효석의 『초록의 탑(綠の塔)』과 그 민족·인종·젠더적 층위를 중심으로 (A Worldview of the Colonized’s Bildung Ideology and the Vestige of Chaejo: Focusing on Yi Hyo-sŏk’s The Green Tower and Its Ethnic, Racial, and Gender Demarcations)

초록

본 논문은 이효석의 식민지 말 일본어 장편소설인 『초록의 탑』을 중심에 두고 민족적 위계로 인한 구조적 차별에 놓인 피식민 남성이 미적 완결성을 갖춘 ‘세계’ 구상을 완수하기 위해 재조일본인 여성을 자원화할 때 발생하는 불안과 위기의 감각을 살핀다. 이 작품은 피식민 엘리트가 학문적 지성으로 세계주의로서의 ‘유럽적 교양주의’를 획득하고자 하는 정신적 열망을 그리며 그 중심에 재조일본인 여성에게로의 수혈을 둔다는 점에서 여타 식민말기 내선연애·결혼 서사와 차이를 보인다. 식민자 남성과의 우정에 기반한 공모를 동반하기도 하는 약탈적 사랑은 당대 식민지적 현실에 대한 생활 감각을 부차화한 이효석의 ‘더 큰 현실’을 점치게 하였다. 그러나 제국의 비전과 길항하는 이효석의 상상된 세계의 완성과 봉합을 위한 여러 차례의 도전은 민족·인종·젠더의 위계 또는 분할에 따라 위협받거나 교란되며, 그 과정에서 피식민자는 여러 가능성의 흔적을 남긴다. 이 글은 식민지주의 연구가 고려해야 하는 양립 가능성을 방법론적으로 환기하며 이효석을 비롯한 식민지 말 일본어 글쓰기에 대한 분석틀의 재고를 요청한다. 또한 식민자의 실질적·상징적 추방 가능 여부보다 추방될 수 없는 식민자들이 피식민자 내부에 (무)의식적으로 조성하는 불안의 정체를 파악하는 것이 긴요하다고 주장하며 재조일본인 재현이 피식민자의 욕망을 중단 혹은 지연시킬 수 있음을 논증한다. 『초록의 탑』을 통해 제국적 질서에 종속되지 않은 피식민 엘리트 남성 교양론의 한 판본을 살필 수 있으며 동시에 재조일본인을 시야에 넣은 식민지주의 비판의 다층화를 꾀할 수 있다.

영어초록

Focusing on Yi Hyo-sŏk’s late colonial Japanese-language novel The Green Tower. this study explores the sense of disquiet and crisis that emerges when a colonized man, structurally marginalized due to ethnic hierarchies, utilizes and exploits the presence of a Japanese woman residing in Korea to fulfill his own vision of “world” characterized by aesthetic completeness. The novel illustrates the spiritual aspirations of the colonized elite to attain “European Bildung” as a form of globalism through intellectual pursuits, which hinge on the transfusion of a Japanese woman in Korea. This narrative distinguishes itself from other depictions of late colonial love and marriage. The predatory nature of this love, at times intertwined with a collusion rooted in friendship with a colonizer man, enables Yi to envision a “greater reality”-one that marginalizes his lived experience within the colonial reality of the time. However, his repeated attempts to construct and reconcile his imagined world, which is fundamentally antagonistic to the imperialist vision, are consistently threatened and disrupted by hierarchical divisions of ethnic, racial, and gender. In this process, the colonized subject leaves behind traces of various alternative possibilities. Methodologically, this article invokes the logic of compatibilities that colonialism studies should address, advocating for a reevaluation of the analytical frameworks applied to Yi Hyo-sŏk’s works and other late-colonial Japanese writings. Furthermore, by positing that the representation of Japanese residents of Korea serves to halt or delay the colonized male’s desire, the paper suggests that greater analytical emphasis should be placed on understanding the anxieties and insecurities unconsciously generated by colonizers who cannot be expelled, rather than gauging possibility regarding their symbolic or actual expulsion. Through an exploration of The Green Tower, this study elucidates a form of colonial Bildung ideology by elite men that resists subordination to the imperial order. Simultaneously, it calls for a more nuanced, multi-layered approach to the critical re-evaluation of colonialism and colonialization, one that engages with the roles of Japanese individuals residing in Korea.
