청대(淸代) 요서(遼西) 지역 민가(民家)에 대한 조선 지식인의 시각 - 조선 후기 사행록(使行錄)을 중심으로 - (View of Joseon Intellectuals on the Private Housing in the Liaoxi Region of the Qing Dynasty Era － Focusing on Sahaengroks of the Later Period of Joseon －)

초록

조선 시대의 중국 사행에서 중국 동북부 요서지역은 주된 사행노정이었다. 이들 지역을 지나면서 견문한 사실 중에서 본고는 요서 지역 민가에 대한 사행록 서술을 통시적으로 고찰하였다.
가장 이른 기록인 권근의 「봉사록」에도 이미 14세기말부터 이 지역 민가는 일자형 평면으로 지붕마루가 없어서 지붕이 평평하며, 지붕 위를 흙이나 백회를 덧발랐던 것을 알 수 있었다. 이후 김창업과 이의현은 이들 민가에 대해 ‘일자형’ 구조와 지붕 재료에 대해 객관적으로 서술하였으며, 최덕중은 ‘평방자’라 칭하고 ‘괴이하다’라는 주관적인 감상을 덧붙였을 뿐 별다른 의견을 서술하지는 않았다.
황재는 요서 지역 민가에 대해 ‘평방자(平房子)’라는 최덕중의 용어를 사용하고 ‘명나라 유민이 명나라가 망해 임금이 없는 것을 슬퍼해서 대들보 즉 지붕머리가 없는 집을 짓고 산다’는 의미를 덧붙였다. 대명의리론에 입각하여 요서 지역 민가에 대해 평한 것으로 이후 ‘평방자’ 대신 ‘무량옥(無樑屋)’이라 명칭이 변하게 되었다. 송시열의 대명의리론을 계승한 권상하의 손녀 사위였던 황재의 이러한 견해는 이후 조선후기 18세기 사행록 곳곳에서 확인할 수 있었으며, 19세기 이해응의 「계산기정」에서도 여전히 확인된다.그러나 18세기 후반으로 갈수록 황재의 대명의리론 시각에 반박하는 기록들 또한 많아졌다. 즉 요서 지역 민가의 일자형 구조와 평평한 지붕, 진흙 또는 백회로 덧바른 이유가 정치적 의미가 아닌 자연 환경으로 인한 선택이었다는 실학적 시각에 입각한 논의가 정광충, 이의봉, 조환, 김정중 등에 의해 서술되었는데, 이들은 지붕에 덧바른 재료도 단순한 진흙이 아닌 감토(㙳土)를 사용하여 비가 새지 않도록 하였음을 지적하였다.
송시열이 영도하던 노론 쪽에서 강고한 대명의리론을 부르짖고 있을 때 노론의 대표적 인사였던 김창업과 이의현의 사행록에서도 민가에 대해 ‘일자형’인 집의 객관적인 사실만을 기록해 두었다. 이는 노론이라고 해서 무조건적인 대명의리의 관점에서 청을 바라보지 않았음을 시사한다. 권상하의 손녀사위인 황재에 의해 요서 지역 민가의 형성 원인으로 ‘명나라에 대한 충의’라는 이유가 서술된 후 이러한 의미가 반복되어 재생산되어갔지만, 또 다른 사행록 속에서는 객관적 사실 서술을 중심으로 실학적 사고에 의해 이러한 의견은 극복되어 갔다. 이는 좀 더 세심하게 사행록 속에 나타난 조선 지식인들의 시각차를 고구해야할 것을 시사해준다.

영어초록

In the traveling record of China during the Joseon Era, the northeastern part of the Liaoxi Region in China was the main course of journey. From the facts seen and experienced while passing the region, this article has contemplated the Sahaengroks description on the private housings in the Liaoxi Region with the profound insight.
In Gwon Geun’s 「Bongsa-rok」 that is the earliest recorded article, those private housings in this area had the straight-type plane without the roof ridge from the end of the 14th century to have flat roof and the top of the roof had the clay or white limestone applied over the roof. Thereafter, Kim Chang-eop and Lee Ui-hyeon objectively described on those private housings with respect to the ‘straight-type’ structure and roof material, and Choi Deok-jung named as ‘Pyeongbangja’ and added his subjective opinion to describe as ‘peculiar’ without mentioning any particular opinion on this matter.
Regarding the private housings in the Liaoxi Region, Hwang Jae used the term of Choi Deok-jung as ‘Pyeongbangja’ and added the implication of ‘Yoo Min of Ming Dynasty constructed and lived in a house without the roof head, namely, beams, for expressing his sorrow to see the Ming Dynasty fallen to have no king to rule’. Based on the Theory of Loyalty toward Ming Dynasty, it is an assessment on the Liaoxi Region that the name of ‘Pyeongbangja’ was changed to ‘Muryangok’ thereafter. Hwang Jae, the husband of Gwon Sang-ha’s granddaughter, who succeeded Theory of Loyalty toward Ming Dynasty of Song Si-yeol had such an opinion and it was confirmed from a number of phases in the 18th century Sahaengroks in later period of Joseon, and it was surely confirmed from Gyesangijeong of Lee Hae-eng of the 19th century. However, as it approaches to the later period of the 18th century, the records to rebut to the Theory of Loyalty toward Ming Dynasty view of Hwang Jae increased as well. Namely, the reason for straight-type structure, flat roof, application of clay or white limestone for the private housings in the Liaoxi Region was practically viewed as a selection from natural environment, not a political implication that was described by Jung Gwang-chung, Lee Ui-bong, Cho Hwan, Kim Jeong-jung and others, and the material for application to the roof was not a simple clay but the hydro mica in a way of preventing the rain water to smear in.
The Noron (a political faction during the Joseon Dynasty) that was advocated by Song Si-yeol call out for the solid Theory of Loyalty toward Ming Dynasty but the Sahaengroks of Kim Chang-eop and Lee Ui-hyeon who were the representative figures of the Noron also recorded the objective facts of private housing regarding its straight-type housing. It suggests that even the Noron did not look at the Qing Dynasty with the point of view for unconditional loyalty toward Ming Dynasty. The husband of Gwon Sang-ha’s granddaughter, Hwang Jae, described the reasoning of ‘loyalty toward the Ming Dynasty’ as the cause of formulating the private housing in the Liaoxi region, this type of implication has been repeated over and over, but in other Sahaengroks, such an opinion was overcome by the practical way of thinking focusing on subjective factual descriptions. This fact implies to narrow the difference of views in Joseon’s intellectuals appearing in Sahaengroks for a bit more in details.
