燕行錄의 ‘코끼리’ 記事와 朴趾源의 「象記」 (The Records on 'Elephant' in Yonghaengrok & Park, Ji-won's 「Sanggi」)

초록

본 논문은 『熱河日記』 이전의 燕行錄에 실린 코끼리 관련 記事를 추적하여, 그 내용이 어떻게 변화하여 「象房」을 거쳐 「象記」에 이르게 되었는지를 살폈다. 첫째, 연행록의 코끼리 서술은, 처음에는 그저 단순한 奇物로서의 구경거리를 소개하는 정도에서차츰 관찰을 통해 구체적인 묘사로 나아가고, 나중에는 傳言과 탐문을 동원하여 사유의 단초를 마련하면서 형용하기 어려운 복잡한 형상을 그려내는 데까지 진척되었다.
이런 양상은 허봉의 『朝天記』, 인평대군의 『燕途紀行』, 김창업의 「燕行日記」, 홍대용의 「湛軒燕記」를 거치면서 구체적으로 확인된다. 둘째, 박지원의 「象房」은 관찰을 통해 코끼리의 외양을 상세히 묘사하고, 부족한 부분은 탐문을 통해 좀 더 깊이 있게 알아내면서 코끼리의 靈物스러움을 확인한다. 이러한 과정에서 자연스럽게 코끼리의 양면성을 드러내는데, 특히 이전의 연행록에 비해 코끼리의 자율적으로 움직이려 들지않으면 강제로 부릴 수 없다는 내용이 강조된다. 셋째, 박지원의 「象記」는 크게 두 단락으로, 앞 단락이 코끼리와 관련한 단편적인 이야기라면 뒤의 단락은 코끼리를 끌어다 쓴 論辨이다. 그 구성을 살피면 「象房」에서 양면성을 강조한 내용이 그대로 이어오면서 몇 개의 에피소드를 첨가하는데, 이러한 각각의 소단락들은 뒤의 논변 단락과정확히 대응되도록 꾸며져 있는 것이 특징이다. 결국, 「象記」에 소용되는 코끼리 관련 자료들은 대체로 그 이전의 연행록에서 쉽게 구할 만한 것들이며, 그것이 「象房」을 거쳐 특정한 부분이 강조되면서 하나의 주제로 집약될 기반을 마련했고, 다시 「象記」라는 걸출한 記文을 만들어낸 것이다.

영어초록

This paper looked at how the contents of the story changed and passed through 「sangbang」 to 「sanggi」 by tracing the story related the an elephant printed in yonghaengrok(i.e. records on envoys' visits to Peking) prior to 「yeolhailgi」.
First, in the description of the elephant in 「yonghaengrok」, Park,Jiwon started its description at a level of introduction of simply an spectacle as a weird thing, and then gradually made a concrete portrayal through close observation and at length, went forward with a description of an indescribable complicated shape of it with the preparation of a clue to his thoughts by mobilizing a message and questioning.
Such an aspect is actually identified by going through with Huh Bong's 「jocheongi」, Inpyong daegun's 「yondoilgi」, Kim, Changeop's 「yonhaengilgi」,and Hong, Daeyong's 「Damhenyongi」.
Second, Park, Jiwon's 「Sangbang」 identified the elephant's looks like a mystical animal through the detailed description of the outer appearance of an elephant based on his observation and more in-depth grasping of the shortage of its description through questioning. In the process like this, Park, Jiwon managed to naturally expose the elephant as an intelligent animal assuming double sidedness, and particularly the content that the elephant was difficult to handle forcibly when it wouldn't try to move autonomously, was emphasized comparing to the previous 「yonhaengrok」.
Third, Park, Jiwon's 「sanggi」 is roughly divided into two paragraphs;its former paragraph is a fragmentary story related to the elephant while the latter paragraph is a kind of argument written by citing the elephant.
To look at its composition, it is characterized by the fact that the content focusing on double-sidedness of the elephant in 「sangbang」 is linked to 「sanggi」 as it is, with the addition of some episodes. and such sub-paragraphs were devised to accurately be responded against the latter argument paragraph. After all, the materials related to the elephant used for 「sanggi」 were already easily available in previously written 「yeonhaengrok」,and Park, Jiwon laid foundation for integrating those materials into one theme with specific parts of those emphasized in his work 「sanbang」, finally creating 「sanggi」 which is rated as a writing of outstanding merit.
