해방공간, 장덕조 소설의 젠더화된 인식 고찰 -장편소설 『十字路』를 중심으로- (Liberated Space and Gendered Perception in Crossroads by Jang Deok-jo)

초록

본고는 해방공간인 1940년대 후반의 새로운 체제와 정비의 역동적이고 거시적인 흐름을 포착할 수 있는 장덕조의 장편소설 『十字路』를 대상으로 여성 이미지의 적확한 고찰과 변혁에 내재된 젠더 탐색에 주목하였다.
이에 본고에서는 장편소설 『十字路』를 발굴하여 장덕조 작가의 작품 세계에서 상대적으로 논의가 미진하였던 해방공간의 젠더인식에 주목하였다. 연구 대상인 『十字路』를 통하여 해방공간 장덕조 문학에 내재된 젠더의식의 민감성, 감각성, 모성성의 발견으로 은폐되거나 변용된 부분을 포착, 유동적인 여성 젠더의 서사화를 규명하고자 하였으며, 궁극적으로 해방공간 문학의 지형 확장을 목적으로 한다.
첫째, 『十字路』에서는 주체성의 영역이 봉합되었던 지형을 벗어나 젠더화된 주체의 ‘선택’과 ‘자기 결정권’ 등 적극적인 사고의 이행과정에서 ‘민감성’이 발현된다. 둘째, 오은희․강명자․황금주 등 해방공간 소외된 계층의 성의식(性意識)에서 타자의 욕망을 기표로 하는 ‘감각성’을 확인할 수 있다. 셋째, 『十字路』에서 표출된 ‘모성성’은 은유로서의 모성과 실천 행위 규범으로서 근대적 모성이 여성의 새로운 자리매김으로 확대된다.
『十字路』에서 발견된 젠더적 관점의 지속성과 변이의 추출 및 제도 내부에서의 역학관계, 권력화된 제도 간의 배제와 포섭 등 다양한 스펙트럼은 해방공간 장덕조 문학의 젠더적 특성을 이해하는 단초를 제공한다. 이는 해방공간에서 젠더 인식의 변화를 초래하는 복잡다단한 젠더 정치의 함의 과정이라고 볼 수 있으며, 당대 문화적․사회적․정치적 특수성의 젠더 관점을 구명(究明)하는 객관적 조망이라고 할 수 있다.
마지막으로 장덕조 문학은 자료확보의 어려움으로 작가의 문학적 특성을 관통하는 세부적이고 심층적인 분석에는 한계가 있음을 밝힌다

영어초록

Jang Deok-jo’s feature-length novel Crossroads offers a dynamic and macroscopic view of the new social system and the process of its establishment during the late 1940s post-liberation era. In this paper, we studied the image of women in Crossroads, focusing on gender explorations inherently found during the time of turbulence .
When it comes to the works of Jang, attempts to perform an in-depth analysis on her literary characteristics have been limited due to lack of research materials. Thus, we sought the author’s feature-length novel Crossroads and focused on exploring perceptions of gender in the post-liberation era, a topic that was heretofore relatively undiscussed in relation to her works. In addition, we aimed to examine the sensitivity and sensibility of gender perceptions, as well as motherhood in Jang’s post-liberation literature, and identify their hidden or transformed aspects. Thus, we attempted to illustrate the narrativization of fluidity in the female gender and ultimately expand the topography of Korea’s post-liberation literature.
First, “sensitivity” was expressed in the process of traversing beyond a space where subjectivity was denied to actively implement one’s thoughts, including “choice” and “self-determination.” Second, “sensibility” based on the other’s desire was observed in the sexual consciousness of the alienated class of the post-liberation period such as Oh Eun-hee, Kang Myung-ja, and Hwang Geum-ju. Third, the “motherhood” expressed in Crossroads consists of motherhood as metaphor and motherhood as a principle of behavior, which converges into a new positioning for women.
The wide spectrum encompassing the persistence of gender perspectives and their variations, the dynamics within the system, and the exclusion and inclusion between power systems provide the basis for understanding the gender characteristics of Jang’s post-liberation literature. This can be viewed as the implicating process of the complex gender politics that led to changes in gender perceptions in the post-liberation period. Additionally, it offers an objective look at the gender perspectives of the time in terms of its cultural, social, and political particularities.
