몽타주 미학에 기초한 연극적 크로노토프의 이론적 분석틀 (The Theoretical Framework for Analyzing Theatrical Chronotope Based on Montage Aesthetics)

초록

희곡 텍스트를 중심으로 연극적 크로노토프를 고찰한 본 연구는 시간과 공간을 분리해 이해하던 종래의 인식론을 탈피하여 시공간의 예술적 결합이 연극경험의 본질을 차지하고 있음을 밝히려 했다. 이는 곧 크로노토프의 개념 아래 바흐친이 시도한 예술적 시공간의 이해를 연극에 도입하려는 노력이었다. 이때의 시공간 즉, 크로노토프는 단지 객관적인 시공간으로 기능하는 것이 아니라, 연극의 의미화 과정과 경험에 중대한 역할을 한다. 즉, 연극의 크로노토프는 이야기 세계와 사건과 인물의 정신적 이미지를 구축하고, 주제를 은유적으로 전달하며, 특별한 정서적 분위기를 창조하는 것이다. 위와 같은 기능들 뒤에는 문학과 차별되는 연극만의 특유한 크로노토프가 다양한 방식으로 존재하고 있었다. 이때의 크로노토프는 의도한 연극적 효과를 위해 시간과 공간을 특별한 방식으로 몽타주(결합)할 뿐 아니라, 사건이나 인물과 몽타주(결합)되어 사건과 인물 그리고 삶과 세상의 본질을 은유적으로 드러낸다. 이와 같은 몽타주 미학은 크로노토프들 사이의 결합방식에서도 발생하여 연극의 경험과 의미화 과정에 깊게 참여하였다. 이처럼 크로노토프, 사건, 인물은 연극에서 독립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 상호 결합(몽타주)되는 방식에 의해 그 성격이 결정된다. 이와 같은 결과에 도달한 본 연구는 연극에서의 크로노토프를 본격적으로 고찰할 수 있는 이론적 분석틀을 마련했다.

영어초록

This essay tried to find the unique mechanism of theatrical chronotope mainly focused on dramatic texts. To avoid the existing method that understands time and space in theatre as separate entities, it adopts Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope that emphasizes the artistic fusion of time and space in literature. In so doing it assumes that the essence of theatrical experience is relied on the theatre chronotope. According to Bakhtin, the chronotope does not function merely as a physical time-space, but carry out the important role in signifying process. The theatrical chronotope participates in constructing the mental image of story world, dramatic incident, and character, communicating the theme metaphorically, and creating the emotional atmosphere.
Behind the above mentioned functions there exists the various chronotope methods peculiar to theatre, distinguished from literary ones. The theatre chronotope not only montages(combines) time and space in a special way to achieve the intended effect, but also is montaged(combined) with dramatic incident or character to reveal in a metaphorical way the essence of incident, character, and story world. The montage aesthetics also occurs at the level of combining chronotopes from which ensues a special theatrical experience and meaning. As such chronotope, dramatic incident, and character in theatre do not exist independently, instead interrelated each other to reveal their true features.
To examine in detail the above mentioned aspects of theatrical chronotope, this study attempted to make the theoretical analysis frameworks in two directions. The first framework is the system of theatrical chronotope that can be divided into ① explicit chronotope, ② implicit chronotope, and ③ psychologic chronotope. The explicit chronotope is again divided into narrated, scenic, and real one. The scenic chronotope, here, is further divided into illusive scenic and allusive scenic one. The second framework is the montage method of theatrical chronotope that includes ① montage of time and space, ② montage of incident and chronotope, ③ montage of character and chronotope, ④ montage of chronotopes, and ⑤ montage of fictional/real chronotope.
