초록

21세기는 탈장르의 개념을 넘어 혼합과 혼융의 시대로서 환경조형물에서도 다양한 매체들이 융합하는 하이브리드 유형이 등장하고 있다. 그러한 추세의 배경에는 후기구조주의의 해체·탈중심 등의 개념이 배경이 되는데, 이러한 개념들이 환경조형물의 가치와 내용의 형성에도 중대한 영향을 주고 있다. 고대로부터 공공조형물이 주로 설치되는 공간은 공공의 장소로서 여기서는 주로 공동체의 중요한 사안들이 논의되어 왔다. 중세를 거처 근·현대로 이어지면서 공동체의 공간이 도시를 중심으로 발전하면서 공공예술도 다양한 양상으로 확산되기 시작했다.
20세기 접어들어 현대 도시의 공간은 경제활동을 중심으로 도시계획이 형성되면서 소통보다는 편이성과 효율성이 핵심이 되었다. 따라서 공공의 소통이라는 기능은 정지되고 이에 따라 도시의 이미지는 단절된 비인간화의 삶을 보여주는 전형으로 전락되었다. 이러한 문제를 해소하기 위해 공공의 공간에 예술품을 설치하여 소통의 기능을 회복하려는 시도가 나타났는데, 환경조형물은 공공예술의 한분야로서 공공의 공간에 설치되는 대표적인 예술장르가 되었다.
1980년대 이후 한국에서도 서구의 공공미술의 개념을 도입하여 환경조형물을 도시 공간에 설치하는 것을 법으로 규정하고 도시나 대규모 주거공간에 예술작품을 설치하게 되었다. 그러나 대부분의 작품들은 전근대적인 형태에 머물렀고, 작품의 질적 향상보다는 작품의 형태나 내용에서 반복적인 유사성만을 남발한다는 비판을 받으며 도시공간의 또 다른 저해요소로 등장하였다. 이러한 문제를 해소하기 위해서는 공공의 소통이라는 공공성의 개념 확립은 물론 이를 바탕으로 한 체계적인 제도개선이 필요하다. 더불어 건축주, 설계자, 작가, 행정가의 올바른 인식의 전환과 변화도 요구되고 있다.
본 논문에서는 환경조형물과 관련된 환경조형 용어들에 대한 이론적 개념 정리, 미술사적 배경과 국내·외 사례 연구를 통하여 환경조형물의 역할과 기능을 대중의 정서적 안정, 치유의 기능, 인간중심의 도시환경이 형성될 수 있는 토대 등과 연관지어 정의하고, 시·공간 융합 유형, 설치목적에 따른 유형, 매체결합 유형으로 구분하여 하이브리드 환경조형물의 특징을 분석하였다.
결론을 요약하면 첫째, 공간 장소별로의 구분하여 잡종적·이질적인 재료들을 ‘결합·융합·조합’하는 것이다. 둘째, 구상적 형상과 추상적 형상의 혼합이다. 셋째, 다양한 오브제를 통해 전통과 현재를 융합하는 것이다.

영어초록

The 21st century is namely an era of mixture and combination beyond the concept of genre deconstruction, in which there emerge hybrid types of various media fused with each other as for the environmental structure.
In the background of the said drift, there exists a concept such as break-up anddecentralization of the post-structuralism, which is a serious blow to formation of value and content of the structural sculpture. Since ancient times, the space where the environmental sculpture is installed had been used as a public space mostly for communicating important issues in the community. As the space of community had developed with cities as the central figures via the Middle ages up to the modern and contemporary periods, the public art had also grown into diverse aspects.
As it enters the 20th century, convenience and efficiency has become the heart of the space in modern cities amid the urban planning focused on economic activities. Therefore, its function as public communication stopped working, and consequently, the urban image has been degraded to the epitome of what a secluded, dehumanized life is. As a solution to such a problem, there was an attempt to recover the function, such as installation of a work of art in public spaces. In this process, the environmental sculpture has become the representative genre of art installed in public spaces as a part of the public art.
Since 1980, installation of the environmental sculpture were regulated by law also in Korea where the western concept of public art was introduced; thus, a work of art has been installed in cities or large size residential spaces. The majority of such works, however, have emerged as another setback of urban spaces while receiving criticism for remaining in a pre-modern form and overusing repetitive similarities in terms of forms and contents. Thus it is important to build up a public concept of public communication to solve the problem, and it is also required to take a system reform based on the concept. Moreover, there needs a right transition and change in the recognition of building holders, drafters artists and administrators.
This paper redefines the theoretical concept of environmental sculpture terms related to the environmental sculpture and defines the role and function of the environmental sculpture in line with emotional stability, healing function and the basis where a human-focused urban environment can be shaped by looking into the backgrounds of art history and through home and overseas case studies. This paper also analyzes features of hybrid environmental sculptures that are classified with combination types of space and time, purposes of installation, and types of media combination.
To summarize the conclusion, first, it is to 'combinate, converge, and combine' hybrid and heterogeneous materials by dividing them into space places. Second, it is a mixture of conceptive shape and abstract shape. Third, it is to fuse tradition and present through various objects.
