1617년 회답부사 朴榟의 『東槎日記』고찰 (The Study of ‘Dongsa-Ilgi’ of Pak Jae, a Diplomatic Messenger in 1617)

초록

1617년 회답겸쇄환사행의 부사 박재는 정사･종사관보다 3달 늦게 지명되었다. 광해군이 그를 부사로 지명한 것은 국왕의 외척으로서 강경한 대북 노선을 견지했기 때문이다. 그가 받은 밀명은 쇼군의 답례 은(銀)을 궁궐 영건에 충당하도록 사행 내에서 주선하라는 것이었다. 이 점은 장을 달리하여 후일 본격적인 연구로 진행하고자 한다.
박재의 『동사일기』에는 회답사의 발행이 늦어진 조선 내부의 사정이 잘 기록되어 있다. 부사의 재차 지명으로 1차 발행이 지연되었고 국내 정치의 요인 때문에도 또 늦추어졌다. 일본 사자가 수차례의 발행 지연에 항의하여 중도 귀환하였는데, 광해군은 부산으로 내려가는 사신에게 지시를 내려 발행이 지연된 것으로 서계를 대마도주에게 다시 보내서는 안된다고 하고 추후 새로운 사자가 도해하여 사신을 안내해 갈 것이라고 지침을 주었다.
부사 박재는 1617년 7월 7일에 부산을 출발하였으나, 대마도에 머물렀을 때부터 찬기침을 하고 몸이 좋지 않았고 전명을 위해 교토에 체류했을 때는 학질을 심하게 앓아서 외부적 활동을 제대로 하지 못하고 전문으로 일록을 적고 外遠祖 정몽주 또 김성일이 지은 시에 차운하였다. 그는 성종대에 대마도경차관으로 다녀온 외증조 권주의 행적을 찾기 위해 쓰시마번 외교승에게 물었고, 오사카의 사카이에 이르러 1590년의 김성일, 1596년의 황신이 거쳐간 곳을 가늠해 보기도 하였다.
박재의 『동사일기』는 사행 중 내내 건강이 좋지 않아 일록의 양이 간략하고 시문의 양이 많이 실렸다. 이 사행록은 저자의 필체가 아니라 제3자가 저자의 것을 필사한 것이다. 때문에 이름자가 틀리고 인명･관직이 틀리고 필사하면서 고쳐쓴 흔적이 남았다. 이런 약점에도 이 사행록을 정사 종사관의 것과 대조해 보면, 부사의 사행록은 도성 출발에서 도성 도착까지 전체 여정을 기록한 것임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 기록 방식은 1590･1607･1617･1624･1636년 일본사행에서 유지된 관행이었다. 특히 1617년 경우와 같이 삼사의 사행록이 있는 경우에는 서로를 비교해서 읽어서 사행록의 다면적인 속성을 고찰해야 할 필요성이 제기된다.

영어초록

In 1617, Pak Jae was nominated as the vice-envoy of a diplomatic mission tasked with delivering a king’s letter and repatriating the prisoners of war. The nomination of him was three months later than the envoy and the associate envoy. The reason why Gwanghaegun nominated him as the vice-envoy was that he was a maternal relative and had been assuming a hostile position toward the faction led by Jeong In-Hong and Lee Yi-Cheom(大北). He received a secret order to prevail on the delegation to devote silver, an acknowledgement from the shogun, to the construction of a palace. This subject is to be addressed later.
Pak Jae’s ‘Dongsa Ilgi (a report on the diplomatic trip to Japan)’ well shows the reason the delegation was delayed in their departure. The first delay was caused by the re-nomination of the vice-envoy, and the second was by political circumstances in Joseon. The Japanese envoy made complaints about repeated delays in the mission’s departure and returned midway through. The king of Joseon ordered the mission on their way to Busan not to resend the diplomatic document to the Tsushima governor for the reason that they were delayed in departure, and he preindicated that a new envoy would come across the sea and guide to Japan.
The vice-envoy, Pak Jae, departed from Busan on January 7th, 1617, but got a chest cold after arriving at Tsushima. His condition disorder eventually led to severe malaria when staying in Kyoto. He could not do his work properly and thus made daily records by hearing from others. Besides, then, he composed poems by rhyming with words from poems written by Jeong Mong-Ju his maternal remote ancestor and Kim Seong-Il. In the meantime, he asked a diplomatic monk in the Tsushima Fief about the tracks of Gwon Ju, his maternal great-grandfather who was sent on an embassy to Tsushima in obedience to the order of King Seongjong (the 9th king of the Joseon Dynasty), and conjectured the tracks of Kim Sung-Il in 1590 and Hwang Sin in 1596 after arriving at Sakai, Osaka.
‘Dongsa-Ilgi’ is organized by brief daily records as he was out of health during the diplomatic trip. Instead, it contains lots of poems. Meanwhile, it was not written by Pak Jae but was transcribed by a third party. As the case stands, many errors are found in names, posts, etc., along with the signs of redrafting. Unlike the records of the envoy and the assistant envoy, however, it covers all the course from departure to homecoming. That is like a custom found in reports on diplomatic trips to Japan in 1590, 1607, 1617, 1624 and 1636. Especially in the diplomatic trip in 1617, it is noteworthy that there are records of three envoys, which suggests that they should be compared to each other in addition to inquiry into the various facets of diplomatic trip reports.
