초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 본 연구는 1933년 시카고 박람회의 전시주택들을 대상으로 건축가들이 건축적 혁신을 대중에게 전달하기 위한 전략이라는 관점에서 전시주택의 특성들을 연구하는데 있다. 미국에서는 일찍부터 주택 시장을 중심으로 하는 생산 기술이 발전했으며, 매체를 통하여 건축가들과 대중이 직접 소통해왔던 문화가 발달해왔다는 점을 고려하여 시카고 박람회를 선정하였다. 시카고 박람회는 대중적으로 성공한 박람회였으며, 또한 기술혁신을 주제로 미래모습을 대중에게 제시하였다. 이 박람회에서 당시 여러 건축가들과 건설 산업체들은 새로운 공법과 자재, 설비 등을 적용한 전시주택들을 통해 대중에게 주택의 혁신을 선보였다. (연구방법) 시카고 박람회에서 기술의 혁신과 현실의 고려, 대중과의 소통이 이루어진 방법을 조사하기 위하여 주택들의 브로셔에 제시된 공법과 재료, 적용된 설비 등의 기술, 그리고 이러한 기술들을 설명하는 방법을 분석하였다. 특히 박람회에서 가장 실험적이라고 평가받는 켁의 유리주택들에서는 공법, 재료와 켁이 그렸던 거주의 모습 사이의 관계를 분석하여 기술적 혁신과 현실적 적용 사이의 관계를 살펴보고자 하였다. (결과) 시카고 박람회의 주택들은 프리팹 공법의 효율성, 새로운 합성재료의 가치, 기존 공법의 개선 등을 대중에게 제시하였다. 동시에 이러한 기술들은 기술 자체의 혁신이 대중의 일상과 현실에 매우 밀접하게 관련되어 있음을 강조하였다. 새로운 자재나 공법은 대중에게 친숙한 전통적인 재료의 감각이나 대중이 선호하는 양식에 적용할 수 있다는 점, 그리고 에어컨디셔닝 등 새로운 기술이 만드는 편리한 생활의 모습을 강조했다. 켁의 유리 주택들은 첨단의 이미지 속에서 현실적이고 구체적인 거주의 모습을 드러낸다. 미래의 주택의 유리와 12각형 형태는 에어컨디셔닝이 제공하는 가장 완벽한 거주의 모습을 구현하기 위한 현실적인 고려의 결과였으며, 크리스탈 하우스의 외부 트러스는 공간의 효율적 사용이라는 목적을 보여준다. 박람회 이후 켁은 기술혁신이 아닌 실제 거주 공간의 구현을 목적으로 하는 내일의 소규모 주택전시에서 유리라는 재료의 속성을 변형시켜 보여준다. (결론) 시카고 박람회의 전시주택들은 대중의 일상적인 거주라는 관점에서 기술적 혁신들을 드러내었다. 켁 역시 기술 혁신과 실제 거주라는 부분에 따라 그 전략을 다르게 보여주었지만 기본적으로는 기술이 가능하게 하는 현대적인 거주를 드러내는데 그 목적을 두었다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) This study is to discover how architects develop their strategies to demonstrate architectural innovations to the public in the exhibition houses at Chicago World's Fair, a Century of Progress International Exposition in 1933. The Chicago Fair has been important in consideration of the fact that the production technology focused on the housing market developed, and the culture in which the architects and the public communicated directly through the media developed in the early 20th century US. The Fair was publicly successful and also presented the future to the public on the subject of technological innovation. At this fair, several architects and building industries at the time exhibited model houses to showcase their innovations to the public, applying new construction methods, materials and facilities. (Method) We analyzed the techniques and materials presented in the brochures of the exhibition houses at the Fair as well as how to describe the technological innovations and their adaptations to the realities to investigate how the communication with the public was made. In particular, in Keck's two glass houses which have been considered to be the most experimental at the fair, we tried to examine the relationship between technological innovation and practical application by analyzing the relationship between construction methods, materials, and inhabitants' spaces. (Results) The houses at the Chicago Fair presented to the public the efficiency of prefab construction, the value of new synthetic materials, and the improvement of existing construction methods. At the same time, they showed that not only can these technologies be easily applied in the field, but they can also provide familiar forms or living experiences to the public. In addition, the new construction method and the latest facilities were presented together with the inhabitants' space plans and interiors, providing the public with a comprehensive view of the inhabitant's experiences. Although Keck's glass houses demonstrated revolutionary forms, they reveal livings by modern technologies. The glasses and 12 sided shape in House of Tomorrow were the result of realistic considerations to create the most perfect living environment provided by air conditioning. Also the exterior trusses of Crystal House demonstrates the purpose of efficient use of living space. After the fair, Keck tried to apply the properties of glass to an actual living space at Tomorrow's Small Houses exhibition in 1945. (Conclusion) The exhibition houses at the Chicago Fair revealed technological innovations in terms of the public's daily living. The strategies of Keck's exhibition houses displays the different approaches according to which is more focused technological innovation or actual living in the exhibition, but they are basically aimed at revealing the modern living enabled by technology.
