‘정상가족’ 만들기와 아내들의 자리 ― 1970년대 후반∼80년대 한국추리소설 속 여성범죄자를 중심으로 (Creating a 'Normal Family' and the Place of Wives - focuses on female criminals in Korean mystery novels of the late 1970s and 1980s -)

초록

본 논문은 1970년대 후반∼80년대 한국추리소설인 박완서의 『 욕망의 응달』(1979), 김성종의 『 부랑의 강』(1979), 하원의 『 회색수업』(1985)을 대상으로 당대의 여성-주부의 성역할 담론과 젠더 인식을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 통해 이 시기 젠더담론이 ‘남성에게는 공적 영역=순수함=정신화, 여성은 사적 영역=속물적=물질화의 영역을 할애하고 있음을 밝히고자 했다. 먼저 박완서의 『 욕망의 응달』은 인물이 구세대와의 단절을 통해 근대적 정상가족을 형성하는 과정을 보여주는데, 이 과정에서 전통적 가치인 ‘효’나 속물적 가치인 ‘돈’이 아닌 개인적, 근대적인 ‘낭만적 사랑’을 핵심 가치로 하는 정상가족의 모델을 구현한다. 이어 김성종의 『 부랑의 강』에서는 남편의 불륜녀를 살해한 아내의 서사를 살폈다. 이 소설 속에서 ‘낭만적 사랑’을 축으로 한 근대적 ‘정상가족’ 내에서 남편의 불륜은 정신적이고 숭고한 것으로 묘사되는 반면, 아내의 살인은 광기와 분노에 찬 괴물로 묘사하고 있음을 지적하였다. 마지막으로 여성 추리소설 작가인 하원의 『 회색수업』에서 남편을 독살한 아내를 분석하였다. 이 소설에서 남편은 정신적 숭고함을 추구하는 반면 여성은 언제나 세속적이고 속된 것에 몰두한다는 점을 지적하고, 남녀의 성별분업이 정신적인 영역에서도 이루어지고 있음을 밝혔다. 이를 통해 1970년대 후반∼80년대 한국추리소설은 핵가족을 모델로 한 정상가족을 선보이는 과정 속에서 여성들에게는 완벽한 내조라는 명목하에 집안일로 대표되는 사적 영역의 노동뿐만 아니라 비도덕적이며 세속적인 표상을 떠넘기고, 남성들에게는 정신적 숭고함을 부여하고, 도덕적 우월감을 제공하고는 서사들을 선보이고 있었음을 밝혔다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the discourse on gender roles and dichotomous gender perceptions of women and housewives in Korean mystery novels from the late 1970s and 1980s. The objective is to reveal that the gender discourse during this period assigned the qualities of the public sphere to purity and mentalization, predominantly attributed to men, while associating the private sphere with substance and materialization, predominantly linked to women. The focus is primarily on three novels: Park Wan-seo's The Desire of Shade(1979), Kim Sung-jong's The River of Tramps(1979), and Haewon's The Gray Class(1985), all of which feature wives as murderers.
Firstly, the analysis centers on Park Wan-seo's The Desire of Shade as a text that illustrates the evolution of the modern nuclear family, marked by a departure from traditional values. It reveals that the concept of a “normal family,” grounded in “romantic love” rather than “filial piety” or “financial gain,” began to establish itself as the ideal family model.
Subsequently, the narrative of a wife who murders her husband's adulterous partner in Kim Sung-jong's The River of Tramps is explored. The discussion points out that within the context of the modern ‘normal family’ defined by ‘romantic love,’ the husband's infidelity is depicted as spiritual and sublime, whereas the wife's act of murder is portrayed as madness, branding her as a rage-filled monster.
Lastly, the focus shifts to the portrayal of a wife who poisons her husband in Haewon's The Gray Class a female-authored mystery novel. The analysis underscores that in this narrative, the husband is consistently associated with pursuits of the spiritual and sublime, while the woman's concerns are predominantly centered around the secular and earthly. This reveals that the division of labor based on gender also extends into the realm of the spiritual.
Through this examination, it is argued that the division of labor within the 'normal family' structure, modeled after the nuclear family dynamics of the late 1970s and 1980s, imposed a demand for women to be entirely subservient, relegating them to the realms of the immoral and the secular. Simultaneously, it granted men a sense of moral superiority by bestowing upon them spiritual sublimity.
