1930년대 ‘전통’ 인식과 시조담론 (Awareness of ‘Tradition’ in 1930s and Discourse on Sijo)

초록

근대 문학담론 속에서 시조는 ‘국문’으로 창작된 ‘전통’적인 ‘민족’ 문학이라는 가치로서 재발견되었다. 이때 ‘전통’이란 근대 이후에 창출되었을 뿐만 아니라, 사회의 변화에 맞추어 변용되어온 개념이다. 1930년대 이후 시조는 그러한 ‘전통’의 표상으로서 지속적으로 존재하기 위해 그 변화된 의미들을 덧입어왔다. 이에 따라 본 논문에서는 근대 사상과 동서양 인식의 전환, 제국주의 파시즘과 식민지사회 등 1930년대 사회의 여러 지점들 위에서 ‘전통’과 시조의 관계와 의미를 고찰하고 있다.
1920년대 중반 시조부흥론이 주창된 이후, 시조는 근대문학장 안에 시조론을 불러오는 동시에 ‘조선심’의 표상이라는 의미를 획득해갔다. 이어서 시조는 1930년대 ‘전통’ 기획과 맞물리며, 전통적 시형으로서 문단 전반에 인식될 수 있었다. 당시 일제는 강력한 사상 통제와 포섭을 통해 조선과 그 전통을 와해시키는 동시에 재편성해가고 있었는데, 시조는 그 위에서 혹은 그에 대응하며 ‘전통’으로 사유되기 시작했던 것이다.
1930대 후반, 전통지향성을 지닌 문예지 『문장』의 중심축이었던 시조시인 이병기는 실감실정의 표현을 통해 시조가 현대의식을 획득한 ‘전통’으로 계승될 수 있다고 보았다. 이병기의 실감실정은 시조라는 고전 시형에 새로움을 입혀 조선의 ‘전통’을 창출하고자 하기 위한 방안이었다. 또한 모방에서 촉발되었으나 모방 속에서 저항의 힘을 만들어내고자 한 전유의 방식이기도 했다.
한편 시조의 ‘전통’은 조선심의 추상성과 일제의 영향을 은폐함으로써, 당위적인 ‘전통’의 온전한 이미지를 구축할 수 있다는 모순을 안고 있었다. 더불어 급변하는 정세 속에서 시조에 부여되는 ‘전통’의 의미도 조금씩 변화하지만, 이 역시 원래 내재해 있었던 의미처럼 ‘자연화’됨으로써 시조와 ‘전통’은 그 자체가 지속성을 지닌 힘으로 인식될 수 있었다. 이 연구에서는 1930년대 ‘전통’과 함께 선택되고 추인된 당대의 시조를 살펴봄으로써, 그러한 현대시조의 의미화 과정이 지닌 한 부면을 탐색하고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

Sijo (時調, Korean short lyric songs) amid discourse on modern literature had been rediscovered as ‘Traditional People’s Literature’ which was composed in ‘Korean Writing.’ ‘Tradition’ was created since modern era, and, at the same time, this is a concept that has been transformed keeping pace with the changes in society. After 1930s, those altered meanings have been added upon Sijo to make it exist continuously as a symbol of such ‘Tradition.’ Along this line, in this paper, the researcher has investigated the relations between ‘Tradition’ and Sijo, and meaning thereof on various viewpoints of the society in 1930s including modernism, the changes in the Eastern and Western perception, imperialistic fascism, and colonial society, etc.
Since the middle of 1920s when the theory of Sijo revival was advocated, Sijo has brought about the theory of Sijo in modern literature genres, and, at the same time, it has acquired the significance as the representation of ‘Joseon Spirit.’ Subsequently, Sijo was able to be recognized across the literary world as the traditional form of poetry being geared with the plans in relation to ‘Tradition’ in 1930s. In those days, Japanese colonial government had dissolved Joseon and its traditions, and simultaneously reorganized the nation through strict thought control and cooptation. Meanwhile, however, Sijo was started being considered ‘Tradition’ beyond such control, or by responding thereto.
In the latter part of 1930s, Lee Byeong-gi, the Sijo poet, who was the pivotal figure in the literary magazine 『Munjang, the Literature』 that aimed for tradition, thought that Sijo could be transmitted as by ‘Tradition’ which had acquired modern consciousness through the expressions of actual feeling and state. The expression in terms of actual feeling and state by Lee Byeong-gi was a measure to create ‘Tradition’ of Joseon by laying newness over classical form of poetry, so called Sijo. Also, it was his method in order to pull out the power of resistance amid imitation, although this was touched off from the imitation.
On the other hand, ‘Tradition’ of Sijo had carried a contradiction which could establish whole and perfect image of normative ‘Tradition’ by concealing the abstractness of Joseon Spirit and influence of Japanese colonial period. Although the meaning of ‘Tradition’ bestowed upon Sijo was changing little by little amid rapidly changing situation, Sijo and ‘Tradition’ itself were able to be recognized as the power of continuation by being naturalized as it is the meaning originally inherent in it. In this study, the researcher examined contemporary Sijo which had been selected and confirmed together with ‘Tradition’ in 1930s. In doing so, the researcher explored an aspect of signifying process of such modern Sijo.
