초록

이 글은 1980년대 이남희 소설을 대상으로 작품에 나타난 여성의식을 살펴보았다. 1985년 갑신정변을 다룬 역사소설 『저 석양빛』을 통해 등단한 이남희는 역사와 변혁이라는 80년대 의제를 민중민족주의적 시각에서 꾸준히 추구한다. 노동자 계급을 역사의 주체로 설정하여 계급 모순의 해결을 통한 사회변혁을 추구하고 있다. 무자각한 인물이 폭력적 억압의 실체를 깨닫고 연대와 투쟁을 통해 그것과 싸우려는 의지를 보여주는 것으로 성장소설의 서사를 통해 계급 정체성을 확보한 노동자 여성의 이야기가 지속적으로 탐구된다. 이러한 과정에서 계급 정체성을 자각한 여성 노동자들이 패배적이고 수동적인 여성의식에서 벗어나 자기 목소리와 행동력을 갖춘 저항적 주체로 서게 된다. 그러나 여기서 여성 노동자의 문제를 중성적 노동자의 계급 문제로 봉합하는 한계를 보여준다. 여성의 문제를 계급 정체성으로 환원시켜 계급 해방이 곧 여성 해방이라고 주장함으로써 ‘노동자’의 문제로 수렵되지 않는 ‘여성’의 문제와 모순이 서사의 논리에 제대로 통합되지 못한다.
작품의 의도에 통합되지 못한 여성 문제는 그러나 노동자 여성의 비극적 역사 이야기를 통해 재구성되면서 계급투쟁을 유일한 혹은 우선적 문제로 설정하는 작품의 논리에 균열을 일으킨다. 여성이 노동자로 편입되기까지를 이야기하는 과정에서 여성의 참담한 고통과 결핍이 제시되면서 계급 모순으로 환원되지 않은 여성의 억압이 의도치 않게 드러난다. 비극적 이야기는 노동자가 되기까지 혹은 노동의식을 갖춘 부부관계에서도 지속되고 있음을 증언함으로써 계급 정체성으로 환원되지 않는 여성 정체성의 복합성을 노출시킨다. 그것은 계급 해방이 곧 여성 해방임을 주장하는 작품의 논리에 포섭되지 못한 잉여의 영역으로 남겨져 여성 모순이 계급 중심의 사회변혁으로는 해결되지 않는 난제임을 보여준다. 서사의 논리에 포섭되지 못한 채 남겨진 여성 이야기는 90년대 이후 새로운 변혁을 위한 동력을 제공한다.

영어초록

This article explores women's consciousness in the works of Lee Nam - Hee novels in the 1980s. Lee Nam-hee, who began writing a novel through a historical novel, "The Sunlight," which deals with the 'gabsinjungbyun' in 1985, pursued the 80s agenda of history and transformation in a popular-nationalist perspective. It sets the working class as the subject of history and pursues social transformation through the resolution of class contradictions. The story of a working woman who has secured a class identity through a narrative of personal growth novel is explored by showing her will to fight against it her awareness of the reality of violent oppression is demonstrated through the character’s solidarity and struggles. In this process, women workers who are aware of their class identity become a resistance subject with their voice and their willingness to move away from a defeated and passive female consciousness.
However, it does not consider the complex identity of the working woman and it shows the limitations of closing female contradictions to neutralize class problems. It fails to properly integrate female contradictions which has deferent complexities and heterogeneities from class contradictions into narrative logic by claiming class liberation as equivalent to female liberation; that is reduces the problems of women to the issue of class identity.
However, a gap is created in the logic of works that set class struggles as the sole or priority problem: this gap is created through the tragic histories of women workers, as the problems of these women are not integrated into the overall intention of the works. In the course of telling stories about women before they become workers the suppression of these women whose suffering and deprivation has not been reduced to the contradictions of the class, unintentionally manifests. The tragic story exposes the complexity of the female identity, different from class identity by testifying that the tragedies of working women continue to exist in labor - conscious marital relations. As a result, the tragic history of women 's history are left as a surplus not to be subordinated to the logic of the claim that class emancipation is female emancipation. It is a difficulty that cannot be solved by class-centered social transformation. The stories of women which are left as a surplus in narratives reveal the contradictions that could not be solved by the progressive social movements and theories of the 1980s, and provides the power for new transformations since the 1990s.
