‘87년 체제’와 지연된 전향의 완수－1980∼90년대 김원일, 이문구, 이문열 소설의 변화를 중심으로 (The Completion of delayed Conversion and 87 Regime : Focusing on Changes of Kim Won－il, Lee Moon－gu and Lee Moon－yeol’s Novels in the 1980s and 1990s)

초록

본고는 ‘87년 체제’ 성립 전후 김원일, 이문구, 이문열 소설의 변화 양상들을 추적함으로써, 87년 체제가 한국인의 집합적 심성 및 한국 근대소설의 장르 규칙에 미친 영향들을 재구하기 위해 작성되었다. 주지하듯, 김원일, 이문구, 이문열 등은 어린 시절 한국전쟁을 체험한 1940년대 출생코호트(cohort)이며, 좌익 이데올로그를 아버지로 둔 ‘연좌제 가족’들이다. 이념과 혈연, 출생연대가 결합된 이들의 모순적인 집합적 정체성은 냉전－분단체제와 발전국가담론 아래에서 ‘생존’을 절대화하는 마음가짐과 행위 준칙으로 현상하게 된다. ‘좌익2세’ 작가들은 자신들의 모순적인 정체성으로 인해 ‘억압적 국가장치’와의 긴장 관계 속에서 ‘소설 쓰기’를 시작할 수밖에 없었는데, 이 같은 조건이야말로 87년 체제 이전까지 이들 소설의 형식과 내용을 결정한 ‘마음의 레짐’이라 할 수 있다. 87년 체제 이전 김원일, 이문구, 이문열의 작품에는 그들로 하여금 소설 쓰기를 선택하도록 만들었던 모순적인 정체성의 문제와 그 문제를 해결하기 위한 직접적인 질문이 텍스트 표면에 돌출하는 것을 지연하는 모종의 변용 규칙(압축과 전치, 분산)들이 도처에서 관찰된다. 이 변용 규칙들은 ‘억압적ㆍ이데올로기적 국가장치’의 위협과 회유에 대응하여 작가 자신과 작품의 생존을 보장하기 위한 필연적인 선택지이자, 소설을 소설이 아닌 것과 구분 지어주는 장르 판별의 기준이기도 하다. 근대소설, 넓게는 문학이라는 장르 전체를 구속하고 있는 이 같은 변용 규칙들은 현실세계의 지시대상(모순적인 정체성과 이를 억압하는 국가장치)을 강하게 의식하면서 작업해야 했던 ‘좌익2세’작가들에게 역설적인 자유의 공간을 제공하였다. 그런 의미에서 87년 체제 이전까지 이들의 소설 쓰기는 억압된 욕망을 압축ㆍ전위하는 일종의 ‘꿈－작업’이었다고 볼 수 있다. 87년 체제는 좌익2세 작가들과 억압적ㆍ이데올로기적 국가장치 간의 긴장 관계가 급격히 해소되어 간, 역사적 지평의 전환점이었다. ‘연좌제 가족’들은 민주화와 냉전 종식의 흐름 속에서 비로소 (남한) 국민의 정체성으로 귀속될 수 있었는데, 문제는 그들의 소설에서 발생했다. 그전까지 이들 소설의 내용과 형식을 결정해왔던 ‘냉전 생존주의’가 87년 체제와 함께 그 지위를 상실했기 때문이다. 그들이 지닌 정체성의 모순이야말로 그들의 소설에 긴장을 부여하고 독자대중들과의 심리적 연대감을 확보할 수 있게 하는 실질적인 조건이었던바, 87년 체제는 ‘냉전 생존주의’를 해소함과 동시에 좌익2세 작가들에게 주어졌던 태생적인 창작의 조건 또한 해체함으로써 그들의 소설에 파국을 불러온다. 그리고 이 파국이 한국인의 집합적 심성 및 한국 근대소설의 오랜 전통과도 결부된 문제라는 것이 본고의 잠정적인 결론이다.

영어초록

This paper was written to reconstruct the effects of the ‘87 Regime’ on the collective mentality of Koreans and the genre rules of modern Korean novels by tracking the changing aspects of the novels of Kim Won－il, Lee Moon－gu, and Lee Moon－yeol before and after the establishment of the 87 Regime. As is well known, Kim Won－il, Lee Moon－gu, and Lee Moon－yeol are Birth cohorts in the 1940s who experienced the Korean War as a child, and are the family of guilt－by－associates system with communist as their fathers. Their contradictory collective identities, combined with ideology, blood ties, and birth dates, are developed under the ‘Cold War－division’s system’ and the discourse of the developmental state as a mindset and a rule of conduct that make survival absolute. Second－generation writers of communist were forced to start writing novels in a tense relationship with the repressive state apparatus due to their contradictory identities. These conditions can be said to be ‘regime of the heart’ that decided the form and content of their novels before the 87 regime. In the works of Kim Won－il, Lee Moon－gu, and Lee Moon－yeol before the 87 regime, various rules of transformation are identified that delay the display of the contradictory identity problem that made them choose to write a novel. These rules of transformation are inevitable choices to ensure the survival of the artist himself and his work in response to the threat and contempt of the repressive and ideological state apparatus, and are also the criteria for genre discrimination that distinguishes fiction from non－fiction. These rules of transformation, which restrain the entire genre of modern novels and broadly literature, provided a paradoxical space of freedom for these writers who had to work with strong consciousness of the objects of instruction in the real world. In this sense, it can be seen that their novel writing until the 87 regime was a kind of dream－work that compressed and displaced the suppressed desire. The 87 regime was a turning point in the historical horizon, when the tension between these writers and repressive and ideological state apparatus was rapidly resolved. Family of guilt－by－associates system were finally able to return to the(South Korea) national identity in the midst of democratization and the end of the Cold War. But the problem arose in their novel. This is because the ‘Cold War survivalism’, which had determined the content and form of their novels before that time, lost its status as the last instance with the 87 regime. The contradiction of identity was a practical condition that placed tension on their novels and allowed them to secure a sense of psychological solidarity with the audience. The 87 regime brought catastrophe to their novels by dissolving ‘Cold War Survivalism－last instance’ and at the same time dismantling the conditions for the original creations given to these writers. And it is a tentative conclusion of this paper that this catastrophe is a matter of being linked with the collective mentality of Koreans and the long tradition of Korean modern novels.
