바르트의 신화론을 통한 북한 프로파간다 포스터의 의미작용 분석 - 2011년~2019년 포스터를 중심으로 - (An Analysis of the Signification of North Korean Propaganda Posters through ‘Mythologies’ of Barthes - Focusing on posters in the period of 2011 to 2019 -)

초록

남북의 분단 상황이 지속되면서 문화의 차이도 가속화되었다. 이에 북한의 생활과 문화를 종합적이고 구체적으로 드러내는 북한의 예술과 디자인에 대한 연구의 필요성이 제기되며, 그 중 프로파간다 포스터는 정치예술 장르로 규정되어 최고지도자에 따라 그 시각적 표현이 변화되어 왔으므로 남북의 예술의 차이를 파악하고 연구하는 사료로써 가치가 있다. 기존의 연구보다 비교적 최근의 변화와 경향에 주목하고자한 본 연구는 김정은 체제 이후, 웹사이트를 통해 이미 공개된 포스터를 뉴스와 개인블로그, 인터넷 검색 등의 2차적 자료로 한정하여 수집하고 의미작용을 분석하는데 초점을 맞추어 진행하였다. 사례분석은 롤랑 바르트의 의미작용 모델을 차용해 북한 프로파간다 포스터의 시각적, 기호학적 조작을 파악, 그 표현 특성을 밝혔으며, 시각적 요소와 언어적 요소 두 가지의 기표를 통한 1차적 의미인 외시의미를 구분하고 2차적 의미인 함축의미와 신화를 분석함으로써 연구의 결론을 도출하였다. 분석의 결론으로 북한 프로파간다 포스터가 단순히 선전과 교화의 목적으로 제작되는 것이 아닌 북한 주민 실생활에 직접적으로 영향을 끼치는 규범적 역할을 한다는 것이 규명되었으며, 포스터의 의미구조는 ‘정책적 의도’와 그에 따른 ‘정책적 결과’를 결합하여 목적을 내포한 직설적이고 함축적인 텍스트를 활용하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 각 연도별 포스터를 분석한 결과, 북한의 정치적 행보와 연관된 시대적 요구를 반영해 선전의 도구로 활용되어 왔으며 전체적 표현방법 면에서는 1900년대에 정립된 ‘주체미술’과 크게 다르지 않았다. 이는 김정은 시대에 이르러 다방면의 변화를 시도하는 동시에 그들의‘주체사상’의 정통성을 강조하며 북한 미술과 디자인이 정치적 상징체계에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 시사한다.

영어초록

As the division between the two Koreas continued, cultural differences also accelerated. Therefore, it is necessary to study art and design in North Korea that reveals life and culture in North Korea comprehensively and specifically. Among them, propaganda posters have been defined as a political art genre, and their visual expression has changed according to the top leaders. and their visual expression has changed according to their top leader. They are valuable materials as a source for identifying and researching the differences in art in Korea. To pay attention to the relatively recent changes and trends to differentiate from the existing studies, this study collects posters already published through websites after the Kim Jongun regime limiting to secondary data such as news, personal blogs, and internet searches and analyzed the process of signification. The case analysis used Roland Barthes’ signification model to identify the visual and semiotic manipulations of North Korean propaganda posters, and to reveal its expressive characteristics. The conclusion of the study was drawn by dividing the meaning of negligence, which is the primary meaning through signifiers of both visual and verbal elements, and analyzing the implications and myths, which are the secondary meanings. From the analysis, it was found that North Korean propaganda posters are not simply produced for the purpose of propaganda and edification, rather play a normative role that directly affects the real life of North Koreans. The poster's semantic structure was found to use a straightforward and implicit text containing a purpose by combining 'policy intention' and the ’policy results’. In addition, in the analysis of the posters by year, it was found that they had been used as a propaganda tool reflecting the demands of the times related to politics of North Korea, and in terms of overall expression method, it was not much different from the 'Juche art' established in the 1900s. This suggests that North Korean art and design play an important role in the political symbolic system by emphasizing the legitimacy of the “Juche idea” while attempting various changes in the Kim Jongun era.
