초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the socio-cultural discourse on 86 Asian Games and 88 Seoul Olympics. The discourse was re-estimated from the viewpoint of the justification for hosting them, the reality of society and their double-sideness. Considering the Korean economic foundation and standard in the occult and compulsive society at the time of attracting and hosting them, it would have been impossible without rulers’political determination to host both. Nevertheless, it was confirmed that in the background of the two events held by Korea had been the urgency for the military regime to secure its political legitimacy and a high level of political strategy to oppress public opinion and to suppress the people’s freedom by the state power. In addition, while a massive positive discourse that the two events had made a considerable contribution to the national development was produced by scholars, media and government-funded institutes taking lead in evaluating the two events, there was another argument with a critical view by a few that the dignity of people had been damaged and the two events had been availed of as political strategy to enhance the legitimacy of Duhwan Jun’s regime. Since it was the age of darkness when the trend of the times prevented any academic reason from being secured through objective analysis and evaluation from various viewpoints on 86 Asian Games and 88 Seoul Olympics which were the seeds of Korean Sport Culture, the necessity for continuous re-evaluation of them from a present viewpoint is brought up.
