초록

안수길은 여성 문제를 본격적으로 다룬 작가는 아니다. 그러나 작가가 표명한바, ‘인간’과 ‘삶’의 문제를 다루기 위해서는 여성의 문제를 피해갈 수 없다는 점도 분명하다. 안수길은 그가 속한 시대의 한계 내에서 소설세계를 구축해나갔으나 세 편의 작품에서 드러난 ‘여성’은 미묘한 변화를 겪고 있다.
「부억녀」에서의 ‘부억녀’는 여성 수난사를 대표하는 인물이다. 인간이 ‘빈 서판’처럼 순수하고 무지하다는 생각이 부억녀에게서 형상화되어 있다. 작가는 내면진술의 차단과 서사의 중단을 통해 여성에 대한 보편적 인식의 한계지점을 드러냈으며 이로써 한 여성의 비극적인 삶이 역설적으로 자명하게 드러나게 되었다.
「원각촌」에서의 ‘금녀’는 재산의 일종으로 취급된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 금녀는 억쇠의 행동을 촉발시킨다는 점에서 사물들이 ‘비-존재인 무’인 것과는 다르게 ‘존재하는 무’라고 할 수 있다. 주체성이 부정되어 있으되 남성의 주체적 행동을 촉발하는 인물이 금녀이다.
「제3인간형」의 ‘미이’에서 비로소 주체적인 여성의 모습이 드러난다. 그럼에도 불구하고 남성의 눈에 비친 고정된 이미지를 벗지 못하고 있다. 이로 인해 그녀의 주체적인 행동은 잘 모르는 것(무지), 설명할 수 없는 것(신비)으로 남아 있다.
무지한 빈 서판과 같은 여성, 교환가치로서만 취급되는 여성, 그 행동의 진정한 동기를 발견할 수 없어서 무지 혹은 신비의 대상일 수밖에 없는 여성―이 세 편의 소설에 드러난 여성은 이처럼 그 인식의 한계 내에서도 조금씩 변화하며 모습을 드러낸다. 여성이 삶과 인식의 지평에 주체적으로(자기 행동의 결정자로서), 인식론적으로(자의식의 표명으로서) 떠오를 때, 인간과 삶에 대한 형상화는 비로소 그 완성형을 보게 될 것이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the portrayal of women in An Sugil’s short stories 「The Kitchen Lady」, 「Wongakchon」, and 「The Third Type of Man」. An Sugil is not a writer who deals with women in earnest. However, it is also clear that the writer can’t avoid the problems of “Women” in order to deal with human and life problems. He established the world of fiction within the limits of An Sugil’s era, but “Women,” which appeared in this three works, is undergoing subtle changes.
First, a representative example is the female protagonist in The Kitchen Lady, who is regarded as a representative figure of female suffering. Second, a representative example is the female protagonist Geumnyeo in Wongakchon, who is regarded as a possession. She was bought by her husband, who commits domestic abuse. Ultimately he packs up to leave, worried that others are coveting his wife, his property. According to Badiou, Marx saw the proletariat as “existing nothing”, in other words “the nothing that is.” The proletariat is not countable, but merely exists and serves as a revolutionary entity. In An Sugil’s fiction, women assume this status. Unlike his other possessions, she is “the nothing that is” that leads him to take action. Last, a representative example is the female protagonist Mi Yi in The Third Type of Man, who is regarded as a representative figure of an independent woman. Nevertheless, he has yet to shed his fixed image in the eyes of men.
This short stories may be interpreted as offering the perspective of the exploited proletariat or the colonized, and the diasporic experiences of the people of Manchuria. When read in an analytical framework which encompasses class, history and society, the story becomes a mirror of these realities. From this perspective, when women disappears, only the type of social actor that she embodies remains. In other words, the female character is absorbed into the proletariat, who are doubly and triply exploited by a male, a family, and a community. Given the attitudes toward women in An Sugil’s era, he was unable to portray them as characters with a life of their own. In this novel, while women are uncountable, they maintain their status as trigger actions that challenge the class system. An Sugil is lacking in understanding when it comes to the lives and capacities of women, but ironically, the fact that he was able to narratively acknowledge this limitation in his works and elsewhere constitutes his underlying significance.
Nonetheless women in three novels show themselves gradually changing even within the limits of their perception. Despite such limitations, when women emerge subjectively (as a decision maker of self-acts) and epistemically (as a manifestation of self-consciousness) on the horizon of life and cognition, the embodiment of man and life will see its completion.
