초록

이 논문은 근대계몽기 여성 대상 교과서인 장지연의 『여자독본』을 중심으로, 당대 여성 교육의 내용과 그 사회가 주조하려 했던 여성상이 무엇이었는지를 살폈다.
장지연의 『여자독본』은 전한(前漢) 시대 유향(劉向)의 『열녀전(列女傳)』처럼 여성 인물의 이야기를 열전(列傳)의 형식으로 엮는 방식을 취하고 있다. 각 이야기 속의 인물들은 전통적으로 여성들에게 강조되어 왔던 어머니상, 아내상을 보여주기도 하지만, 남자 못지않은 군공을 세우고 나라의 기강을 확립하는 등의 정치적이고 사회적인 역할을 해내기도 한다. 전자가 한국의 여성들이라면, 후자가 중국 및 서양의 여성인데, 이러한 여성상 사이의 모순이 공존할 수 있는 것은 ‘열녀전(列女傳)’이라는 형식의 동일성 하에서이다. 전범이 되는 여성 인물을 통해 새로운 시대의 여성상을 세우고, 그것을 배우게 하려는 계몽적인 의도를 지니고 있다. 세간에 떠돌던 훌륭한 여성들의 이야기를 주제만을 취하는 방식으로 요약 제시한다거나, 본문의 말미에 주요 한자와 그것의 뜻풀이를 달아 한자 습득의 역할을 겸하고자 한 것은, 『여자독본』이 근대적 교과서로서의 기능 역시 지니고 있음을 보여주는 것이다.
또한, 이 책은 상권의 한국 여성과 하권의 중국 및 서양 여성을 다른 기준으로 묘사하고 있다. 한국 여성에게는 전래의 정절 관념 혹은 아들의 교육이나 남편에 대한 내조 등의 여성 역할을 강조하고 있음에 비해, 중국 및 서양 여성에게는 사회적인 문제에 대해 발언하거나 전쟁 혹은 정치에 참여하는 남성적 여성상을 강조하고 있다. 기존에는 존재하지 않았던 이러한 여성상은 근대계몽기의 여성들에게 새로운 부덕(婦德)을 제시하는 효과를 낳았다. 그리고 그러한 여성 인물들 사이에는 층위와 위계가 설정되었다. 분류될 기준이 없어 잡편(雜編)에 묶인 한국의 기생이나 무녀가 있고, 그 위에 어머니나 아내의 역할을 훌륭하게 소화하는 한국의 가정부인이, 또 그 위에는 군공을 세우거나 남성의 일을 대신하는 중국 여성이, 또 그 위에는 정치에 참여하거나 교육 사업을 벌이는 서양 여성이 등장한다. 그들은 모두 국가에 대한 충성을 목표로 한다는 점에서 ‘애국부인들’이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 서양 여성들 역시 남성 주체(국민)들을 ‘매개’하거나 ‘대신’하는 역할에서 벗어난 것은 아니었고, 본래 여성이 맡았던 가정주부의 일에 아들 교육, 그리고 전쟁 및 정치 참여라는 의무가 더 부과되었던 것이다.
근대계몽기는 새로운 여성상이 유입되었지만 여전히 ‘이상’의 여성과 ‘현실’의 여성은 간극을 유지한 채 표류하고 있었다. 열(烈)은 그 의미를 변화시키면서 여성들에게 여전한 규범으로 자리 잡고 있었다.

영어초록

This study set out to investigate the content of education for women and women's image the society tried to create during the modern enlightenment period by examining Reading Book for Women, a textbook for women those days, by Jang Ji-yeon.
His Reading Book for Women is a series of biographies telling the stories of female characters like Biographies of Chaste Women by Yu Hyang during former Han. In each of those stories, some female characters demonstrate an image of mother or wife traditionally emphasized among women. Others even successfully perform their political and social roles such as doing as meritorious service in war as men and establishing the fundamental principles of the country. While the former are Korean women, the latter are Chinese and Western women. Such a contradiction between the two different images of women coexists under the sameness of format, namely "biographies of exemplary women." The format contains an enlightening intention of setting an image of women for a new era through model female characters and having women learn from them. Taking the form of textbook, Reading Book for Women offers a summary by adopting only the topics of stories about great women circulated in the world and providing information about the major Chinese characters and their meanings at the end of each text to help the readers study Chinese characters, which shows that the book also functioned as a modern textbook.
The book applies different criteria of description to the Korean women in Part I and Chinese and Western women in Part II. It emphasizes the conventional concept of fidelity and the traditional roles of women including education of the son and assistance for the husband to Korean women. On the other hand, it emphasizes a masculine image of women such as raising her voice on social issues and participating in politics and war to Chinese and Western women. The new image of women generated the effect of presenting new womanly virtues to women during the modern enlightenment period. The layers and hierarchy of orientation were set among those female characters. Korean Gisaengs and female shamans were put in the miscellaneous category because there was no classification criterion for them. There were Korean housewives to perform the roles of mother or wife beautifully over the category. Chinese women to do meritorious service in war and perform the duties of man were placed over the Korean housewives. Western women to participate in politics and carry out educational projects came on top of them. They were all "patriotic ladies" in that they were loyal to the country. However, Western women did not graduate from the old female roles such as "mediating" and "replacing" the male subjects(people), either. New duties such as education of the son and participation in politics and war were merely added to the old list of roles including serving as a housewife.
A new image of women was introduced in Korea during the modern enlightenment period, but the "ideal" women and "real" women were still drifting about with a gap kept between them. '烈' remained as a norm for women, changing its meanings.
