초록

이 글은 한국의 대표적인 영상 콘텐츠인 텔레비전 드라마가 OTT와 조우하면서생겨나는 새로운 현상에 주목하고자 했다. 넷플릭스를 위시한 OTT의 시대에 오리지널시리즈는 텔레비전 드라마의 단순한 변화를 넘어 플랫폼이 드라마를 어떻게 매개하며생존해 나가는지에 대한 다양한 해석은 여전히 요원한 상태다. 때문에 오리지널 시리즈를 개별 텍스트의 특성으로 이해하는 것은 드라마 장의 전반적인 맥락을 이해하는데한계를 지닐 수밖에 없다. 이를 극복하기 위해 본 논의는 넷플릭스를 둘러싼 비선형적구성의 특징과 몰아보기 방식에 대한 재검토, 장르화에 대한 논의를 진행했다.
먼저 2000년대 이후 안방극장은 케이블 채널의 확장, 미드의 보급 등을 경유한 텔레비전의 선형성에 대한 시청자들의 교란과 반발에 맞닥뜨렸다. 이 과정에서 한국의 시청자들은 글로벌과 로컬의 교차를 적극적으로 받아들일 수 있었으며 파일 공유와 자막제작이라는 참여자의 형태로 문화소비의 한 축을 이끌게 된다. 이러한 맥락을보자면 OTT를 경유한 몰아보기는 2000년대 이후 텔레비전 드라마를 자발적으로 소비하고자 했던 시청자들에 의해 ‘이미’ 학습된 패턴이라고 볼 수 있다.
기존의 텔레비전 시청은 다이얼(채널)을 돌리고 각각의 채널이 제공하는 화면을 선택하는데 그치기 때문이다. 반면 넷플릭스는 콘텐츠를 시청하기 위해 이용자가시각화된 인터페이스 공간에서 스스로 정보를 확인하고 선택할 수 있도록 유도한다.
그들이 구축한 광범위한 콘텐츠 라이브러리는 가상의 공간적 경험을 제공하며 취향에기반한 콘텐츠를 이용자가 플랫폼과의 커뮤니케이션을 통해 함께 구축해 나가는 협력에 가깝다.
결국 넷플릭스는 알고리즘을 통해 스스로 알지 못하는 취향을 탐색하는 유희적행위를 경험하게 하는 데 집중한다. 이러한 특성은 웹을 경유하는 콘텐츠의 전반적인특징이기도 하지만 플랫폼 안에 장시간 머무를 수 있도록 하는 넷플릭스의 전략적 선택이기도 하다. 이러한 맥락에서 넷플릭스 오리지널 한국 시리즈의 특징을 정리하자면 다음과 같다.

둘째, 장르물에 대한 집중이다. 넷플릭스의 오리지널 시리즈들은 특정한 장르관습을 통해 한국과 세계를 맞바로 연결시키는 상상력을 제공한다. 이는 하나의 세계보다 개별화된 취향의 세계를 제시함으로써 드라마 소비의 경험을 재구성하는 것에 가깝다. 이때 장르가 주는 특정한 표상은 알고리즘이 제시하는 취향의 탐색과 상호작용의 요인으로 기능한다는 점에서 새로운 취향 소비의 한 과정을 조직해 낸다.
그러나 기억해야 할 것은 플랫폼에 새겨진 개인의 취향이 온전한 하나의 상으로드러나지 않는다는 사실이다. 보여지는 콘텐츠의 집합을 통해 보이지 않는 취향을 탐색하는 행위는 드라마를 소비한다는 것이 특정한 참여와 경험을 통해 이루어진다는것을 의미한다. 이 과정에서 형성되는 것은 국가와 사회의 경계를 유영(streaming)하듯 넘나드는 의사소통의 장일 것이다. 오리지널 시리즈를 둘러싼 OTT 플랫폼의 욕망은 유저와 시스템 사이의 커뮤니케이션을 통해 구축된다는 점에서 새로운 이해를 요한다.

This article aims to draw attention to the new phenomenon that arises from the encounter of television dramas, Korea's representative video content, with OTT. In the era of OTT, including Netflix, original series are more than just a change from television dramas, and there are still a long ways to go about how platforms survive through the mediation of dramas. Therefore, understanding the original series in terms of individual texts is limited in understanding the overall context of the drama chapters. In order to overcome this, this discussion discussed the characteristics of the non-linear structure surrounding Netflix, reexamination of the binge-watching method, and discussion of genreization.
First of all, since the 2000s, home theaters have faced disturbances and backlash from viewers against the linearity of television through the expansion of cable channels and the spread of mead. In this process, Korean viewers were able to actively accept the intersection of global and local, and they led one of the pillars of cultural consumption in the form of participants in file sharing and subtitle production. In this context, binge-watching via OTT can be seen as a pattern that has been 'already' learned by viewers who have been willing to consume television dramas voluntarily since the 2000s.
This is because conventional TV viewing is limited to turning the dial (channel) and selecting the screen provided by each channel. Netflix, on the other hand, encourages users to check and choose information on their own in a visualized interface space to watch content. The extensive content library they have built provides a virtual spatial experience, and it is more like a collaboration in which users build content based on their tastes together through communication with the platform.
At the end of the day, Netflix focuses on making people experience the playful act of exploring tastes they don't know they know about through algorithms. This is an overall feature of content that travels through the web, but it's also Netflix's strategic choice to allow content to stay on the platform for extended periods of time. In this context, the characteristics of Netflix original Korean series are summarized as follows.
First, there is the emergence of cinematic television dramas. Netflix's original series push the boundaries of television drama thanks to the intervention of big capital and autonomous expression. As a result, short episodes and a rating not suitable for young people emerged as a box office condition for the original series, attracting subscribers. This shows a differentiated characteristic from television in that it creates a connected narrative unlike the existing television dramas that are divided into episodes and provides an opportunity for users to secure and interpret the segments themselves. As a result, OTT original series are characterized by blurring the line between film and television drama.
Second, it is a focus on genre works. Netflix's original series offer an imaginative connection between Korea and the rest of the world through specific genre conventions. This is more of a reconstruction of the experience of drama consumption by presenting a world of individualized tastes rather than a single world. At this time, the specific representation given by the genre organizes a process of new taste consumption in that it functions as a factor of exploration and interaction of tastes presented by the algorithm.
However, it is important to remember that the personal tastes inscribed on the platform are not fully reflected. The act of exploring unseen tastes through the set of content shown means that consuming drama is achieved through specific participation and experience. What will be formed in this process will be a field of communication that crosses the boundaries of the state and society as if it were streaming. The desire of OTT platforms around original series requires a new understanding in that it is built through communication between users and systems.
