데넷(D. C. Dennett)에 있어서 의식의 발생과 진화에 관하여 (On the Genesis and Evolution of the Human Mind in D. C. Dennett's Kinds of minds)

초록

정신과 물질에 대한 정의는 데카르트에게서 연장과 비연장의 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 데카르트의 정의에 있어서 연장과 비연장은 공간성을 기준으로 한 것이다. 그런데 베르그송에 따르면, 이러한 정신의 비연장성은 정신의 자발성을 의미하는 것이었고, 이 자발성은 동질적인 공간으로 환원될 수 없는 질로서 분화하는 시간성을 본질로 한다. 더 나아가 시간과 공간은 뉴턴에서처럼 독립적인 것이 아니라 상호 의존적이고 보완적이며 상대적이라는 것이 아인슈타인의 상대성이론에 의해 밝혀졌다. 그 결과 현대에서 심신 관계의 문제는 감관-지각을 인식의 토대로 간주하는 과학에 의해 시공 4차원의 변증법에 따라 유물론적으로 밝혀지고 있다. 특히 현대에서 마음에 대한 탐구는 인간의 사유 기능을 모방한 컴퓨터에 유비되어 탐구되고 있다. 왜냐하면 서양에서는 파르메니데스 이후 마음을 사유와 동일한(일치한) 것으로 간주하고 사유란 언어를 통하여 이루어지는 행위라고 이해되었기 때문이다. 이러한 사유와 마음을 동일시하는 사고방식은 원자론적인 환원론적 사고와 이데아론으로 나타난다. 그런데 원자론적인 환원론적 사고나 이데아론은 시간에 대한 통찰을 결여하고 있다. 이 때문에 설령 자연 과학이 마음을 시간의 관점에서 즉 진화론적으로 설명한다 해도, 마음의 정의와 존재 문제를 물질이나 생명의 기원에다 미루는 것에 불과하다. 이 논문은 마음의 본질을 사유가 아닌 감각과 시간성에 두는 베르그송의 입장에서 데넷의 『마음의 진화(kind's of mind)』에 나타난 마음의 4가지 진화적 단계의 구분을 인간 지능 발달에 따른 구분에 불과한 것(거짓 문제-해답)으로 비판적으로 고찰했다.

영어초록

R. Descartes defined the matter as extended in space in contrary to the unextended mind. The criterion of the distinction between the mind and the matter was the spacial extension. Here comes to arise the problem of the relation of the matter and the mind. According to H. Bergson, the activity of the human mind and the unextendedness of the mind means the time-potency or the volitional activity of the mind. So, the mind can only be understood in the point of the duration of time which is differentiating as qualities, which cannot be reduced to the equally differentiating space.
The space and the time can represent separately the matter and the mind which are understood as independent things each other according to I. Newton. But according to the A. Einstein's relativity theory, time and space are related to each other like 4 dimensional space-time. So We can imagine that the mind and body seams to be related as 4 dimensional space-time dialectics. Because the matter seems to act according to the necessity of the Newton's rules of movement which are constructed by analysing human reason as space-atom paradigm, while the reason, the core of the mind acts voluntarily in time, but according the rule of contradiction.
Nowadays, the study of the acting of human mind is compared to computer which is constructed according the analysis of the acts of human thinking through language. So, the problem of the relation of human mind and its body is resolved materially by the material sciences and computer science which studied the act of mind atomically. The identification of the mind and thought with language is resulted in atomic reductionism which neglects the essence of differentiating time. Even if the study of the reductionism of the human mind to the matter or the thought with language is equipped with historical knowledge of time like Ch. Darwin's theory of the evolution of the life in biology, it postpones the solution of the definition of the mind to the origin of the matter or the life. D. C. Dennett's Kind's of mind is the example of this kind of study. In this paper, D. C. Dennett's method of materialistic reductionism of human mind to the robot's man-made intelligence is criticised from the viewpoint of H. Bergson who regard the essence of the mind as time-equipped sensibility, especially D. C. Denett's "the 4 steps of the evolution of the mind" as the steps in the development of human intelligence.
