초록

본 연구의 목적은 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈《브리저튼》(2020)을 중심으로 현 코로나 시대에 급성장한 넷플릭스 체제 하에서 제작된 작품의 내러티브를 허구세계의 존재론적 측면에서 탐구하는데 있다.
넷플릭스에서 자체 제작하는 매체에 대한 이해(理解)와 분석이 요구되는 현재, 본 연구는 급변하는 다매체시대에 서사 텍스트의 저력을 확인하고 한국적 콘텐츠가 글로벌 환경에서 어떻게 존립해야 하는지를 넷플릭스의 오리지널 제작 시리즈《브리저튼》을 통해 살펴 볼 것이다.
넷플릭스 제작 시리즈《브리저튼》은 19세기 영국 귀족 사회를 흑백이 조화롭게 살아가는 사회, 즉 인종을 초월한 사회로 각색하면서 원작의 훼손과 역사의 왜곡, ‘정치적 올바름(Political Correctness:PC)’이라는 논란의 중심에 선 작품이다. 《브리저튼》은 기본적으로 원작 소설의 서사를 따르고 있으나 영화로 각색되면서 일부 서사나 인물의 변화를 가져 왔다. 원작 소설의 묘사가 특정인물에 국한된 것에 반하여 영화는 촘촘한 서사와 훨씬 많은 볼거리를 제공하기 위해 화면을 화려하고 생동감 있게 구성하는 방식으로 당대를 재현하고 있다. 이렇게《브리저튼》의 화려한 영상과 매혹적인 캐릭터는 내러티브의 개연성과 결합하면서 흑인 귀족이라는 낯선 존재에 대한 거부감을 상쇄시킨다.
19세기 영국 귀족 사회가 다인종 사회라고 허구화할 때 매혹적인 흑인 공작은 가능할 수 있으며 우리는 흑인 배우를 헤이스팅스 공작이라고 믿을 수 있다. 이것은 19세기 영국에서 흑인 공작이 없었으며 흑인이 공작이 아니라는 것을 알지만 허구 작품의 세계 내에서 매혹적인 흑인 공작이 있었다고 ‘믿는 척 가장’할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 여기에서 가장은 헤겔의 ‘가상’ 개념을 빌어 정의할 수 있다. 헤겔은 가상에 대해 본질은 가상이며 본질이 가상자체에 이미 기입되어 있다고 보았다. 내적 본질은 가상(외관)에 이미 기입되어있기 때문에 내부 자체는 텅 빈 공백, 무(無)만이 남아있게 된다고 할 수 있다.
재현할 수 없는 공백, 무는 공포를 환기시키는데 흑인 배우들이 연기하는 영국 귀족이 상정하는 것이 재현할 수 없는 공백에 대한 대체라고 할 때 이것은 공포를 수반하는 섬뜩함으로 다가 온다. 이 드라마에서 주요 흑인 배역은 어둡고 이상하며 괴팍한 인물들의 자리에 위치하고 있는데 이는 인종으로 캐릭터의 특성을 대체함으로써 캐릭터가 지닌 독특성이 인종적인 특질로 변질되어 버리는 한계를 지닌다.
그럼에도 《브리저튼》이 성공할 수 있었던 것은 내러티브를 구축하는 픽션의 힘에 있다고 할 수 있다. 다시 말하면, 이 작품에 대해 19세기 영국 귀족 사회의 현대적인 재해석이라고 긍정할 수 있는데 이러한 옹호가 가능한 것은 작품 속 내러티브가 지닌 개연성에 있다. 허구 작품에서 리얼리티는 현실 세계의 리얼리티가 아니라 허구적인 리얼리티라고 명명할 수 있다. 즉 허구를 실제처럼 보이게 하는 것이 아니라 허구를 허구 안에서 구축하는 것을 의미한다. 허구 세계는 충실한 리얼리즘적 재현으로 구축되는 세계가 아니라 픽션의 보충에 의해 완성된다. 따라서 허구 세계의 진리는 현실적인 리얼리티에서 필연적으로 발생하는 것이 아니라 내러티브의 개연성에서 구현된다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the narrative of works produced under the Netflix system, which has grown rapidly in the current Corona era, focusing on the Netflix original series "Bridgerton" (2020) in terms of the ontological aspect of the fictional world.
Currently, Netflix's self-produced media needs to be understood and analyzed, and this study will confirm the power of narrative texts in the rapidly changing multimedia era and look at how Korean content should exist in the global environment through Netflix's original production series "Bridgerton." The Netflix production series "Bridgerton" is an adaptation of the British aristocratic society in the 19th century as a society where black and white live harmoniously, that is, a society that transcends race, and is at the center of controversy over the damage of the original work, distortion of history, and "Political Correctness: PC." "Bridgerton" basically follows the narrative of the original novel, but it has brought about some changes in narratives and characters as it has been adapted into a movie. While the description of the original novel is limited to certain characters, the film reproduces the time in a way that the screen is colorful and lively to provide a dense narrative and much more to see. In this way, the colorful video and fascinating character of "Bridgerton" are combined with the probability of the narrative, offsetting the resistance to the setting of a black aristocrat.
When British aristocratic society in the 19th century fictionalizes it as a multi-ethnic society, a fascinating black Duke may be possible, and we can believe that black actors are Duke Hastings. This means that in the 19th century, there was no black Duke in England, and we know that black people were not peacocks, but we can pretend to believe that there was a fascinating black Duke in the world of fiction. Here, the patriarch can be defined by Hegel's concept of 'virtual'. Hegel saw that the essence of the virtual is virtual and has already been written in the virtual itself. Since the inner essence is already written in the virtual (appearance), it can be said that the inside itself remains empty and nothing.
The irrecoverable void, the dance, evokes fear, and when the assumption of a British aristocrat played by black actors is a replacement for an irrecoverable void, this comes to the eerie accompanied by fear. In this drama, the main black roles are located in the place of dark, strange, and eccentric characters, which has a limitation in that the uniqueness of the character is transformed into racial characteristics by replacing the character's characteristics with race.
Nevertheless, it can be said that the success of "Bridgerton" lies in the power of fiction to build a narrative. In other words, this work can be affirmed as a modern reinterpretation of the 19th century British aristocratic society, and it is in the probability of the narrative in the work that such advocacy is possible. In fictional works, reality can be called fictional reality, not real world reality. In other words, it means building fiction in fiction, not making it look real. The fictional world is completed by supplementing fiction, not a world built through faithful realistic representation. In other words, it can be said that the truth of the fictional world does not inevitably arise from realistic reality but is realized in the probability of the narrative.
