한국과 핀란드 신화 비교 연구 <바리공주>의 바리공주와 <칼레발라>의 레민케이넨을 중심으로 (Comparative Studies on the Korean and Finnish Myth -Focused on Princess Bari and Lemminkäinen)

초록

The aim of this study is to understand cultural characteristics by comparing the narrative structure and motif of “resurrection” in the Korean myth “Princess Bari” and the Finnish myth “Kalevala”.
Pricess Bari and the First Lemminkäinen Cycle from the Kalevala has something in common that they are a search for “resurrection”. In this study, Lemminkäinen was interpreted as a trickster and his mother, who was not even named in the Kalevala, was regarded as a hidden hero. The study also compared the worldviews of the two myths and examined the cultural symbol for “resurrection”. Both Princess Bari’s myth and the Lemminkäinen cycle are premised on the belief that the spirit could return only when the body was intact after death.
Princess Bari has a Buddhist god as a helper god, and the description of hell is also similar to that of Buddhism. There are many gods in the Kalevala, but Ukko became the supreme deity due to the influence of Christianity. Tuonella, the afterlife, was originally a neutral place, but it was influenced by Christianity to have an image of hell. Therefore, we can see definitive influence by Christianity in the Kalevala.
However, in the Kalevala, Lemminkäinen died not because of his misbehavior, but lack of knowledge of the incantation. So, this part was not influenced by Christianity, instead showing a characteristic of Finnish folk beliefs.
