초록

이 논문은 1세기 그레꼬-로마 세계의 문화적 특징들을, 고넬료의 이야기 속에서 살펴본 것이다. 고넬료의 이야기에는 다음과 같은 문화적 특징들이 나타난다. 첫째는 사회적 가치를 획득하는 ‘명예와 수치’에 관한 것이다. 사람들은사회적으로 인정된 명예의 가치를 획득하고자 노력하며, 그 반대인 수치는 피한다. 명예에는 두 종류가 있다. 하나는 태어날 때부터 갖고 태어난선천적 명예이고, 다른 하나는 후천적으로 이룩한 성취된 명예이다. 고넬료의 선천적인 명예는 그의 이름에 나타난다. 그는 로마 사회에서 명문씨족인 고넬료 가문에 속한 사람이다. 그리고 그는 백부장이란 직업적 명예, 온 유대 족속으로부터 칭찬을 받는 도덕적 명예(10:22) 그리고 ‘하나님경외자’라는 종교적 명예를(10:2) 후천적으로 성취하였다. 둘째는 사회적 관계를 형성하는 ‘후원자와 수혜자’의 관계이다. 많은 부와 재산을 가진 사람은 없는 사람들에게 나누어 준다. 이때 후원자와 수혜자 관계가 형성된다. 후원자의 은혜에 대해 수혜자는 충성을 해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 배은망덕한 사람이 된다. 고넬료와 그의 온 집안은 유대백성들을 많이 구제한다(10:2). 그는 가난한 사람들을 물질적으로 도와주었을 뿐만 아니라, 유대인들의 공공사업에도 후원하였다. 그래서 유대인들은 고넬료에 대한 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다(10:22). 특히 가이사랴에서 다수의 헬라인이 소수의 유대인들을 억압하는 정치적 사항을 고려하다면, 고넬료의 유대인 후원은 특별한 것이다. 이로 인해 유대인들은 고넬료에게더욱 감사하는 마음을 가졌을 것이다. 셋째는 ‘친족 관계’이다. 가족은 혈연관계로 형성되는 인간관계의 가장기초적인 집단이다. 반면 가정은 가족을 기반으로 형성된 경제적 공동체이다. 여기에는 노예 그리고 친구나 피후원자도 포함된다. 고넬료의 가정에 속한 사람들로는 하인 둘과 경건한 부하 한 사람(10:7) 그리고 고넬료의 친척과 가까운 친구들이다(10:24). 가정에서 가장 중요한 역할은 아버지가 한다. 그가 집안의 모든 일들을 결정한다. 가장인 고넬료가 기독교인이 되기로 결정하자, 그의 가정에 속한 모든 사람들도 세례를 받아 기독교인이 된다. 그결과 고넬료 가정의 사람들은 초기 기독교 발전에 큰 기여를 한다. 넷째는 사회의 질서를 제공하는 ‘정결과 부정’의 원리이다. 유대인들은하나님이 모세를 통해서 준 음식 정결 규례를(레 11장) 엄격히 지켰다. 그래서 그들은 부정한 음식을 먹지 않고자, 이방인들과 식사를 하지 않았다. 그리고 그것을 부정한 것으로 여겼다. 베드로는 환상 중에 부정한 음식을먹으라는 하나님의 음성을 듣는다. 그가 부정한 음식을 먹는 것을 거부하자, “하나님께서 깨끗하게 하신 것을 네가 속되다 하지 말라”(10:15)라는음성을 듣는다. 이것은 하나님께서 직접 베드로에게 말씀하신 것이다. 유대의 전통적인 음식 정결 규례를 오직 하나님만 수정할 수 있기 때문이다. 베드로와 고넬료의 만남은 전통적인 유대교 음식 정결 규례를 파괴한것이다. 그 결과 유대인과 이방인이 함께 식사하는 것이 이제는 정결한규례가 되었다. 그리고 고넬료의 가정의 사람들은 베드로의 설교를 듣는다. 그때 그들은 성령 강림의 체험을 한다(10:45; 11:15). 그리고 그들은 세례를 받음으로 정식적으로 기독교 공동체에 가입한다. 곧 그들은 예수를그리스도로 고백하는 새로운 가족이 되었다. 결국 고넬료의 이야기에서는 1세기 당시의 문화적 특징, 곧 명예와 수치, 후원자와 수혜자, 친족 관계 그리고 정결과 부정의 원리를 모두 찾아볼 수 있다. 그래서 우리는 고넬료의 이야기를 1세기 문화를 들여다볼 수있는 ‘창’(窓)이라고 말할 수 있다.

This paper examines the cultural features of the first-century Greco- Roman world in the story of Cornelius. Cornelius' story reveals the following cultural characteristics: The first is about ‘honor and shame’ that acquires social value. People try to attain socially recognized values of honor, and vice versa. There are two types of honor. One is the innate honor which is gained from birth, and the other is the acquired honor. Cornelius’ innate honor appears in his name. He is a member of the Cornelius family, a prestigious clan in Roman society. And he acquired the professional honor of the centurion, the moral honor (10:22) praised by all the Jewish people, and the religious honor as a person who admires God (10:2). The second is the relationship between ‘patrons and clients’ that forms social relationships. Those who have a lot of wealth and money were giving resources to those who do not as supporters. At this time, a relationship between the sponsor and the beneficiary is formed. Beneficiaries must be loyal to the patron’s grace. Otherwise, you will become an ungrateful person. Cornelius and all his household rescue many Jewish people (10:2). Not only did he help the poor materially, he also supported the public works of the Jews. So the Jews spared no praise for Cornelius (10:22). Especially in Caesarea, Cornelius’ Jewish patronage is extraordinary, given the political implications of a large number of Greeks oppressing a small number of Jews. This made the Jews more grateful to Cornelius. The third is ‘kin relationship.’ The family is the most basic group of human relationships formed by kinship. On the other hand, the household is an economic community based on the family. This includes slaves, friends, and clients. In the story of Cornelius, two servants, a godly man (10:7), and Cornelius’ relatives and close friends (10:24) appear in the story. The father plays the most important role in the home. He decides everything in the house. Eventually, when Cornelius, the head of the family, decided to become a Christian, everyone in his family was baptized as a Christian (10:48). As a result, the people of the Cornelius family contributed greatly to the early development of Christianity. Fourth is the principle of ‘purity and pollution’ that provides social order. The Jews strictly followed the rules of food cleansing that God gave through Moses (Lev. 11). So they did not eat with the Gentiles, so as not to eat unclean food. And it was considered unclean. Peter hears God’s voice to eat unclean food in vision. When he refuses to eat unclean food, he hears the voice, “When God says that something can be used for food, don’t say it isn’t fit to eat” (10:15). This is what God said to Peter himself. This is because only God can amend the traditional Jewish food purification rules. Peter's meeting with Cornelius broke the traditional rules of Jewish food cleansing. As a result, eating together with Jews and Gentiles is now a clean rule. And people in Cornelius’ home listened to Peter’s sermon. Then they experienced the advent of the Holy Spirit (10:45; 11:15). And they formally joined the Christian community by being baptized. Soon they became a new family to confess Jesus as Christ the saviour. In the end, Cornelius’ story reveals all the cultural characteristics of the first century Greco-Roman: honor and shame, patrons and clients, kinship, and principles of purity and pollution. So we can say Cornelius’ story is a ‘window’ through which we can look into the culture of the first century.
