초록

이 글은 『억눌린 말들의 연대』(소명출판, 2024)의 서평으로, 기독교, 검열, 연대를 키워드로 이 책의 가치와 한계에 대해 상술하고자 했다. 이 책은 학계가 주목하지 않은 『아세아공론』이라는 혼종적인 잡지를 본격적으로 다룬 선구적 연구인 동시에, 유학생 잡지로서만 다루어지던 『기독청년』, 『현대』를 도쿄, 기독교, 다이쇼(기)를 매개로 『아세아공론』과 연속선상에서 보는 시각의 새로움이 돋보이는 연구였다. 저서에서 기독교는 조선 청년들에게 단순히 개인의 종교적 신념이 아니라 사회 개혁을 위한 담론자원으로 활용되었음이 실증을 통해 꼼꼼히 분석되었다. 이로써 근대 초 동아시아에서 사상으로서 기독교가 갖는 의미에 대해 다시 생각해볼 기회를 제공했다. 또한 매체에 대한 실증적인 분석에만 갇히지 않고 초국적 연대의 거점으로 도쿄라는 시공간 및 유학생 단체들의 실천을 함께 보았다는 점이 특징적이다. 그러나 도쿄와 유학생들의 특수성을 강조하는 과정에서 일본의 영향에 다소 과한 의미가 부여되기도 했다. 혹은 일본에 대한 조선/영국(YMCA)의 차별성을 부각하는 중에 비슷한 비약의 혐의가 나타나기도 했다. 한편 균형 잡힌 시각으로 인류애적, 반제국주의적 성격을 띤 초국적 연대의 양화만 보여준 것이 아니라 음화로서 그 균열의 지점까지 보여준 것은 본서가 가진 미덕이었다. 그러나 연대라는 개념이 다소 느슨하게 규정돼 연대로서 피식민의 현실을 돌파하고 (재)정의할 수 있는 힘이 약화되는 인상도 든다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 책은 ‘개조’의 시대, 저항과 협력의 이분법을 넘어서 트랜스내셔널한 연대의 (불)가능성에 대해 사유해보려 한다면 참조하지 않을 수 없는 저서의 하나이다.

영어초록

This article is a book review of Solidarity of Suppressed Languages(Publisehd by So Myung, 2024), and aims to discuss the values and limitations of this book with the keywords of Christianity, Censorship, and Solidarity. This book is a pioneering study of the hybrid magazine The Asia Kunglun, which has not been paid attention to by academics, and it also offers a fresh perspective by connecting it with Christian Youth and Hyeondae, which had previously been examined solely as foreign student magazines, by viewing them in the context of Tokyo, Christianity, and the Taishō era. The book thoroughly analyzes how Christianity was used as a discursive resource for social reform, not just a personal religious belief, by young Koreans, offering an empirical examination that prompts readers to reconsider the significance of Christianity as an ideology in early modern East Asia. It is also characterized by the fact that it does not limit itself to empirical analysis of the media, but also looks at the time and space of Tokyo as a center of transnational solidarity and the practices of international student groups. However, in the process of emphasizing the specificity of Tokyo and international students, the book at times places undue emphasis on Japan’s influence. Similarly, when contrasting the differentiation between Japan and Korea/Britain(YMCA), there are moments where this comparison seems somewhat overstated. On the other hand, it is a virtue of this book that it does not merely showcase the positive aspects of transnational solidarity, which is characterized by humanitarian and anti-imperialist ideals, but also the points of fracture within this solidarity, in a balanced perspective. However, there is also the impression that the concept of solidarity is somewhat loosely defined, which weakens the power of solidarity to break through and (re)define the reality of the colonized. Nonetheless, the book remains an essential reference for those wishing to reflect on the (im)possibilities of transnational solidarity beyond the binary of resistance and cooperation in the era of ‘reform’.
