초록

Documentaries can be easily regarded as truth but they are actually produced in accordance with the intention of producers. <Crossing the Border of Heaven> is a work directed by a reporter for the Chosun Ilbo, and it reflects a considerable number of South Korean conservatives’ opinions. Therefore, this study aims to consider the dominant discourse in regard to North Korean defectors in our society through a text analysis.
This study analyzed <Crossing the Border of Heaven>, a documentary produced to have people know of the reality of North Korean defectors, by classifying it into a narrative sequence analysis and video components.
As an analysis result, if we look at the narrative sequence in terms of the theme of the delivery of fact, it is thought to have a well arranged composition beyond just strong realism and objectivity. This means that this documentary smoothly delivers the director’s intention by ensuring universality with a special theme. That is, by repeatedly showing the message that North Korean defectors fled from their country to survive as it is a bad place for people to live and South Korea can be heaven to them, the documentary is implicitly arguing that North Korea may be hell.
Next, as for the video components, this study analyzed three videos from the perspectives of narration, interview and editing. These components criticized the reality of North Korea and effectively articulated the interviewees’ psychology. However, the interviewers’ attitudes towards interviewees changed depending on the producers of the videos.
In particular, interviewing the interviewees in non-honorific language can be seen as looking down on them out of awareness, and it is not much different from our society’s perception of North Korea.
This documentary repetitively proposes a unified message that the reality reproduced in it is “the reality of North Korea”. This poses a lot of implications of the reality, hardship and escape process of North Korean defectors to our society. We should humbly look back on why they had to cross the border of the country they were brainwashed to regard as heaven, where another heaven they are looking for is, and whether our society can be heaven to them.
